Contract Retrospective: Lugo in Boston
In the hot news of the weekend, Julio Lugo‘s negotiations for what was probably a minor-league deal with Cleveland have broken down. Things were not always so bleak for Lugo. Lugo had some good seasons with the (then) Devil Rays in the mid-2000s, and after a 2006 in which he was traded to the Dodgers, he was in demand as a free agent middle infielder during the 2006-2007 off...

Instant Replay: The Problem
On the morning of July 26, 2011 the Pittsburgh Pirates were in a first place tie in the National League Central with a record of 53-47. The day before they had beaten the Atlanta Braves in a nationally televised game on ESPN to put them in that top spot but later that night and in the 19th inning their season would turn on a horrible call. A call that could have been reversed...

Another shortstop dilemma
There has been lots of talk lately about the revolving door of Red Sox shortstops since the early 2000's. Edgar Renteria had one terrible year. Alex Gonzales had two stints and both times refused to re-sign. Julio Lugo was a bad free-agent signing. And now Mario Scutaro, after two fairly productive years, is gone in a trade. A "Red Sox Beat" article in the Herald by Michael Silverman...

Report: Alex Gonzalez No Longer an Everyday Shortstop, May Make Sense as Backup for Red Sox
Former Red Sox shortstop Alex Gonzalez is a free agent and can still field the position well, but fans should be wary if their team pursues him as an everyday shortstop, according to ESPN. Gonzalez, whom Boston fans remember as the clean-fielding infielder who preceded Julio Lugo, is an even worse offensive player now than he was in 2006, if Keith Law's analysis is any indication...

Former Red Sox Shortstop Julio Lugo the Latest Player to Fall Victim to Greg Maddux Locker Curse After Being Released by Braves
Red Sox fans are familiar with curses -- or at least the notion that one may have once existed. But the Atlanta Braves might currently have a situation on their hands. With the release of infielder Julio Lugo on Friday, the 36-year-old becomes the latest casualty of a seemingly cursed locker in the Atlanta clubhouse. For years, any player who has sat in the locker next to where Greg...

Braves Release Julio Lugo…Finally
Good news out of Atlanta today as the Atlanta Braves cut ties with Julio Lugo today. Lugo was signed to a minor league deal in May. He was called up at the end of June and designated Diory Hernandez for assignment. The Braves had hoped that Lugo’s veteran presence and his productivity in the past would be realized as a utility player.
These hopes were not realized, however....

Only Thing Rays Traded This Weekend Was Friedman’s Appendix
We can imagine that the trade deadline can be a very stressful couple of days for a General Manager. So the last thing a GM would need is to be rushed to a hospital to have his appendix removed. And that is exactly what happened to Andrew Friedman on Saturday night, who had to conduct his trade deadline business on Sunday, from a hospital bed. [TBO.com]
