Falcons face must-win vs. Bears in rare home game

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) The Atlanta Falcons are back in familiar surroundings for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears. Better not get used to it. It will be nearly Thanksgiving before the Falcons play another game at the Georgia Dome, a stretch that will likely determine if they're a playoff contender or headed toward another dismal season. With that daunting run looming...

Plenty of new faces in the Falcons lineup

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) When the Atlanta Falcons returned to practice Wednesday, it looked a bit like training camp. Who's that at center? And right tackle? And left guard? Oh, and is that someone new at strong safety? The Falcons (2-2) are all beat up, coming off a game in which two starters on the offensive line (center Joe Hawley and right tackle Lamar Holmes) sustained...

Four Downs: Falcons' defense shredded in loss to Vikings

The Atlanta Falcons gave up 41 points to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, and that wasn't even one of their biggest problems. Minnesota scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win by 13, and romped down the field at will on Atlanta's defense, racking up 558 total yards of offense. The Falcons were also brutalized by injuries. Starting safety William Moore, and...

Atlanta Falcons Continue To Beef Up Lines With Round 1 Pick

Prior to the 2013 season, the Atlanta Falcons released starting RT Tyson Clabo and practically forced C Todd McClure into retirement. The team felt they had a good offensive line with Sam Bake, Justin Blalock, Peter Konz, Garrett Reynolds, and Mike Johnson. However injuries took Baker and Johnson out of the mix, and ineffective play […] The post Atlanta Falcons Continue To Beef...

The Interior Line: a further analysis

The interior offensive line this year was a mixed bag-leaning well towards the negative side of things. On one hand, Justin Blalock played better than average and proved to be our best offensive lineman. However, having a slightly above average guard acting as the cornerstone of the interior isn’t going to keep Matt Ryan on his feet, or create holes for Jacquizz Rodgers or Steven...

Falcons' O-line needs work heading into preseason finale

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. For Falcons fans who watched Saturday's preseason loss to the Tennessee Titans, it seemed as if, indeed, the sky was falling. Quarterback Matt Ryan was sacked five times in a little more than two quarters. To compare, Ryan was sacked more than that only once in a regular season game last season. That's how quarterbacks get hurt. "We gave up way...

State of the Falcons: Offensive Line

It's very quiet in Falcon land as the draft is over and the next big thing on the agenda is signing the draft picks and getting an extension done for Matt Ryan. Signing the draft picks will probably have to wait until Tyson Clabo's numbers come off the books in June. There is also talk of adding another veteran around that time as well. ESPN's Pat Yaskinskas says Richard...

Taking a look at the largest '13 salary cap hits on offense

The NFL salary cap in 2013 is just over $120,000,000. Every player in the league is worth a certain amount of money. Obviously, some players are worth more than others and teams are willing to dedicate a larger portion of their cap space to greater talent. Here's a breakdown of the highest paid offensive players this year in the NFL QB Eli Manning: $20,850,000 Matthew Stafford...

Atlanta Falcons Draft Outlook: OL

The Falcons offensive line is a bit of a question mark. Especially with the release of RT Tyson Clabo. Presumably Lamar Holmes will play right tackle next year but that leaves the Falcons with a hole at swing/back up left tackle. A hole I assume they will fill in the fourth or fifth round of the draft.  Another position of interest is the guard position. Justin Blalock is...
