VIDEO- What the F*&% are we doing? - Jon Gruden; 2003 Home opener vs Carolina
For many, it was the first sign the 2003 Bucs were NOT the same as the 2002 Super Bowl team. In a few weeks, the loss to Indianapolis on Monday Night Football would confirm it. Those two games kept the Bucs at 3-2 instead of 5-0, and could have made a big difference. But were focusing on Carolina, and what happened in 2003. The Panthers blocked two Gramatica FG attempts, and with...

Keenan McCardell has faith in Anthony Armstrong
Washington Redskins wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell said that he isn’t worried about second-year pro Anthony Armstrong and that he knows Armstrong will continue to improve against press coverage.
Armstrong came under scrutiny this week after Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan remarked that he needed to do a better job at beating bump coverage to regain his starting job and a steady...

Your On-The-Field Pregame Pass
Given the predominantly “Burgundy sprinkles” on this “blue raspberry sherbet” stadium, this game might qualify as the ninth home game for the Redskins this season.
I’m hungry.
As Redskins players trotted out on the field, they were met with raucous applause and cheering. The hometown Panthers came out under a chorus of boos...

They’re Going the Wrong Way!
The Jacksonville Jaguars are a franchise that is discombobulated. The picture above pretty much confirms that.
They’re really hasn’t seem to be any direction from the front-office with their offseason moves that last several years. They haven’t had a franchise QB since Coughlin era, when Mark Brunell was under center. Byron Leftwich was a statue under center...

Redskins Are Back To The Gridiron
Hurricane Irene is a distant memory at Redskins Park today, as players and coaches prepare for the final preseason test on Thursday against Tampa Bay.
Given that the roster currently sits at 87 (plus two on P.U.P.), some familiar faces will depart to get the roster down to 80 tomorrow. The big cuts happen after the fourth preseason game, when the roster must downsize to 53, plus...

Training Camp: That’s A Wrap
AP Image
Today was the final day of training camp for players and coaches. Without question, the weather this morning was the best of training camp, with the temperature in the mid-70′s and a brisk breeze.
Here’s some quality footage of the quarterbacks refining their footwork in the pocket:
This is one of my favorite drills. It’s difficult to see what exactly...

Redskins Hope to Improve Red Zone Scoring in 2011
There wasn’t a lot to like about the Redskins offensive performance in 2010, but nothing disappointed more than their woes in the red zone.Washington finished 21st in scoring percentage from inside the 20-yard line with a 51.16 percent scoring rate. That was a significant drop-off from 2009 when a Jason Campbell-led offense converted 56.52 percent of its red zone attempts into...

A Snap-Shot Of Training Camp Competitions
With thousands of fans on hand for Fan Appreciation Day at Redskins Park, I took my up close view to try to capture some things the folks from the hill couldn’t see.
Suited up in their full upper-body pads, it was the first day of full-contact practice. No more slap and hug tackles, break out some ferocity:
Wide receiver’s coach Keenan McCardell has his guys practice...

Receiver Competition Is Heating Up
In at least one practice for the last couple days, both head coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan have taken a particular interest in the wide receiver drills.
The result has been seen in a slow but steady improvement on the consistency of the receivers. A lot has been said about the quantity of hands in camp, but it looks like the quality is starting to...

Fun Facts: Gaffney vs. McCardell
AP Image
On a team that’s in the middle of a youth movement, adding a 10-year veteran makes him instantly one of the oldest players on the roster. Such is the case with wide receiver Jabar Gaffney.
One of the most interesting aspects of Gaffney, is that he’s one of the only players left who played against Keenan McCardell, his current position coach. The two overlapped...

Brandon Banks needs to show speed
Brandon Banks was noticeably slower durng the second half of last season after undergoing midseason arthroscopic knee surgery. He returned to the field quickly after surgery but didn’t have the same impact in games. To make the roster, the wide receiver and kick returner will have to show coaches that he’s recovered his pre-injury speed.
“I think he’s healthy right now. His...

Keenan McCardell Loves A Longshot
Current Redskins wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell does an interview with his former team's website. Brian Tinsman reports.
When Keenan McCardell was drafted by the Redskins in the Round 12 (326th overall) of the 1991 NFL Draft, he was immediately inducted into the fraternity of "roster longshots." While many in this group kick around the league for a few years before pursuing...

Top Ten All-Time Jaguars: #9 Mike Hollis
Yesterday I gave the number ten all-time great Jaguars in team history. Keenan McCardell stood tall at number 10. Tonight’s pick doesn’t stand so tall as far as stature goes. What this man lacks in height he makes up for in the amount of points he scored as he is the all-time leading scorer in Jaguars history. From the University of Idaho here is the 9th greatest Jaguar:

Keenan McCardell Does Some Self-Scouting
Keenan McCardell is hip-deep in his second offseason as an NFL coach, the first where he's had a full season to observe and evaluate the guys in his wide receiver group. So when he sat down with Larry Michael for an exclusive interview on Redskins Nation, it was natural that the topic of self-scouting would come up. McCardell broke down not only his own performance as a rookie...

Malcolm Kelly must heal, but quickly, says Keenan McCardell
Redskins wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell has made things clear to Malcolm Kelly, who has been sidelined since early in training camp because of a hamstring injury. Kelly still has time to impress Coach Mike Shanahan in his bid to make the opening 53-man roster, but it's getting late in the process. Of course, Kelly must first heal properly, and that's part of the problem...
