Bidding Wars
I have never understood the point of paying a whole truckload of money just to talk with someone. This irks me especially when it comes to professional sports teams. I understand the concept; you are paying for the right to take a player off of their team in another country which is really just compensation. Hey, I’m all for compensation but when we’re talking about amounts...

A Number A Day, Jan 2012
Last time I did this was the countdown to Opening Day 2007. This time I'm just doing this for the heck of it. Instead of real baseball players, I'm trying this month to wear a baseball t-shirt or uniform for every day of the month that I have one. I don't ACTUALLY have one for every single number between 1 and 31, though I'm close. So far I've worn them on the...

Horse First, Then Cart
I’m a bit sleep deprived after a long week in Dallas, but I wanted to make one quick point before heading to bed. I know that the Angels decision to spend big on Pujols and Wilson has caused a lot of people to turn their attention back to the size of the Mariners payroll, and calls are getting louder for the team to spend more money in order to compete in the AL West. I&...

Ichiro Opting Out
"After lots of very deep thought and deliberation, I have decided to return home to resume my career in Japan. I have had a wonderful experience competing at the major league level. I will always be indebted to the Mariners organization for giving me the opportunity to follow my dream. This was a very difficult decision, both professionally and personally. I feel now is the...

Impermanence in Baseball
Probably the most understated aspect of professional baseball is the swift player movement. In any one year, prospects go from prominence to irrelevance, pitchers go from stardom to the operating table, and relievers go from, well, any end of the spectrum to the other. Stuff happens in baseball. Players are traded, sign with new teams, and over one thousand potential Major...

Morning Hangover – 5 Worst Mariners Free Agent Signings
TweetTime to get listy with it. With the news of Milton Bradley going, well Milton Bradley, I feel it’s an appropriate time to look at the 5 worst Seattle Mariners free agent signings.
Runners up:
Richie Sexson: 2005 - 4 years $50 Million – Overpaid, but at least he was productive for awhile.
Chone Figgins: 2009 – 4 years $36 Million – He’ll be in the top 5 before...

Position Analysis: Catcher
I wasn’t too long ago that Seattle felt really good about it’s catcher position. Kenji Johjima was coming of a good year, and there were 3 talented prospects that were coming down the pipe. GM Bill Bavasi talked about it being a “good problem to have,” and that the team could pick the best 2 and the others could be traded to fill other holes.
Oh how quickly...

Game Report: Swallows vs. Tigers @ Jingu - The Miki Shall Not Inherit The Earth (yet)
After watching the Toshitaikou bracketing on Saturday, I was like "Hey, I was thinking of going to Jingu tonight for the Yakult-Hanshin game, wanna go?"So we did. Before the game, I had a very important piece of business to take care of, however. You see, it's been over a year now since Ryuji moved to Sendai, and it's been a long process for me to get over him and...

Game 76: Nearly Lost You
The Yankees return home for the first time since Father's Day, opening a six game homestand with a three game set against the Seattle Mariners. The M's were the darlings of the off-season, unloading the onerous contracts of Carlos Silva and Kenji Johjima, signing spark plug Chone Figgins away from their division rivals, and making a series of lesser low risk, high reward...

Mariners hitters losing the numbers game
The maligned trio of Richie Sexson, Jose Vidro and Kenji Johjima on a 2008 Mariners team that lost 101 games actually looks pretty good compared to this year's ineffective bats.

The All-Mariners Team – By Season
Remember me? Probably not. I write articles about the best individual seasons at each position for each team, but my last article was a couple site modifications ago. I am continuing my series with this year’s must-watch team, the Seattle Mariners. Enjoy!

Photos are at the bottom, but here's a teaser:(Yuki Karakawa is legally an adult, but he still looks like Harry Potter when he laughs.)This is the 1000th post to this blog. How weird is that?Anyway, today I finally went to a baseball game! Hooray! Despite the snow in Tokyo last night, the forecast for today said it'd be sunny and go up to around 16 degrees C. It only...

Odds & Ends: Astros, Messenger, Selig
A few more Saturday evening links....
The Houston Chronicle's Richard Justice poses a challenge to his readers, asking how they'd build the 2010 Astros, given the team's payroll restrictions.
Japan's Hanshin Tigers are interested in a former Seattle teammate of Kenji Johjima, reliever Randy Messenger, according to Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker.

Week In Review: 10/25/09 - 10/31-09
Baseball's hot stove season begins after the World Series, but we still had action during the last week of October.
Manny Acta was hired to manage the Indians, which led to the Astros hiring Brad Mills. Tony La Russa's extension with the Cardinals was announced; it's a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2011. La Russa is bringing Mark McGwire with...

Johjima to Hanshin
As was already rumored from the moment he opted out, Kenji Johjima is signing with the Hanshin Tigers. It’s reportedly a 4-year deal for $21 million. So that’s more money than he’s giving up by opting out of his contract (more years too, obviously). We can speculate all we want about some quiet backroom payment, [...]--

Johjima Reaches Agreement With Hanshin Tigers
Catcher Kenji Johjima reached an agreement with the Hanshin Tigers, according to reports passed along by NPB Tracker's Patrick Newman. One of the reports indicates it's a four-year deal worth around $27MM. Newman is unsure of the accuracy of that figure. If it's right, Johjima actually topped the two years and $16MM left on his Mariners contract.
