Yu have to admire the Rangers' guts
It's amazing what back-to-back trips to the World Series can do for a general manager's credibility. What, do you think Rangers president Nolan Ryan would've signed off on a reported 51.7 million bid for the negotiating rights to right-hander Yu Darvish a couple years ago?
The Rangers could've taken a much more conventional approach to this offseason, but obviously...

"Old Times Were Good Times"
In January 2010, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan solicited votes for Texas's All-Decade team (2000-2009) from media, club officials and former players. I was flattered to be among the voters. The rules were to pick one player at each position, five starting pitchers, a closer and a setup man. I partially wrote a blog entry on my selections to be published in conjunction with the...

Laugher!
(Kevin Mench and Willie Harris enjoyed a good laugh at Justin Maxwell's expense after Maxwell slipped in the on-deck circle after scoring in the 8th. Those are two giant heads right there, by the way. Picture of TV/MASN by Nationals Enquirer staff.)

Hawpe to It
The Colorado Rockies are on the verge of releasing OF Brad Hawpe. Coincidentally, the Nationals are in the market for an outfielder to replace Josh Willingham as he makes his long overdue trip to the DL. Hawpe should be that replacement. There's no question that there will be a reshuffling of the Nats outfield. All three outfield spots are legitimately up for grabs over the season...

Major League Notebook: August 6
by FanHouse StaffFiled under: MLB NotebookHere is what's happening around baseball on Friday Aug. 6, 2010:
o. Nyjer Morgan did the smart thing in telling the Nationals' medical staff that he felt a "sharp pain" in his hip while jogging a couple of days ago, but he has to be wondering if he should have kept his mouth shut. Though an MRI revealed nothing more than...

Wes Timmons: 2-3, 2B
Jair Jurrjens gave up a ton of hits but his only big mistakes were a two-run homer by Chris Duncan and a double by Kevin Mench. Otherwise he allowed singles that led to nothing. However, what they did do was run up his pitch count and made him leave early at 79 pitches through 4.2. The line...

Placido Polanco’s Head Has a Posse
Forgive me if this is something that has been around for awhile, but last night was the first time The Polanco Heads walked into my life. If there were ever a head in Major League Baseball that deserved to be celebrated, it would most certainly have to be the impressive melon that rests upon the shoulders of Placido Polanco. Apologies in advance to Kevin Mench.

The David Boss Files, Vol. 2

• God, this Rams uni looks just about Perfect, no? The deeper blue, the soft gold pants stripe, the white-laced high-tops. Deelish.
• Speaking of the Rams, it just never seems right to see Joe Willie in this uniform.

New Gazoo Review
Last week I wrote about new bats and batting gloves, and now it looks like we may have a new batting helmet too, at least judging by the new headgear Norris Hopper and Kevin Mench were wearing this past weekend.
I’ve sent e-mails to my contacts at Rawlings and hope to hear back from them soon, but here are a few thoughts to tide us over until then:
• I could be wrong, but...

OLLIE IN MID-SEASON FORM
You always tell kids in Little League (as Ron Darling stated) when a ball goes under a fence, raise both your arms straight up in the air. Willy Taveras must have missed that lesson when he was seven but his folly is Omir Santos gain with an inside-the-park-grannie.
Ollie Perez threw strikes today and the Nationals and most of them were tattooed by Nationals batters. The Mets will...
