Lyle Overbay to be Designated for Assignment
Dejan Kovacevic reports on Twitter that he hears the Pittsburgh Pirates have told Lyle Overbay that he will be designated for assignment. The move wouldn’t be a huge surprise, as the Pirates just acquired Derrek Lee, and need to open roster spots today for Lee and Ryan Ludwick. By designating Overbay for assignment, the Pirates can hope that another team claims him, and...

The Electric Meter: Righties and lefties
In yesterday's Electric Meter, I set out to find the root of Charlie Morton's struggles over the last month. As it turned out, though, there wasn't much to see. Morton's pitches look the same, his peripherals look better, and the only thing that's different over the last month is the opponent's batting average on balls in play, which is something that'...

2011 Arizona Diamondbacks Player Evaulations: Lyle Overbay
In continuing on with looking at the 2011 Diamondbacks, we move on from the men behind the plate at catcher to a position in first place which saw a number of guys play the position throughout the 2011 campaign.
One of those guys was Lyle Overbay, who was signed by the club on Aug 13 after he was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates a week earlier. In his return trip to the Arizona...

Lyle Overbay is still finding work
Lyle Overbay hit a combined .234/.310/.360 with the Pirates and Diamondbacks next year. He only hit nine home runs all year. The Diamondbacks apparently want to bring him back for another year. Of course, the D'Backs will almost certainly finish with a better record than the Pirates in 2012 and the Pirates are playing Clint Barmes more than $10 million over the next two years. So...

On D-backs reunion weekend, Overbay reprises 2001
PHOENIX Lyle Overbay was playing for Pittsburgh when he received the invitation to attend the reunion for the Diamondbacks' 2001 World Series team at Chase Field this weekend. Nice thought, he thought, but he had other games to play.

Punching Lyle Overbay in the Cojones
A hypothetical conversation that I envision happening some day soon…
July 26, 2011…9:33 AM…Visiting Coach’s Office at Turner Field
Lyle Overbay: Wanted to see me, Skip?
Clint Hurdle: Yeah Lyle, have a seat. Bad news. A fan has paid for the right to punch you…in the balls.

Lyle Overbay unsung hero in win over Phillies
On most nights when Roy Holladay pitches a complete game with a total of fourteen strikeouts it equals a notch in the win column, but tonight ended with the Diamondbacks recording their league leading 34th come from behind victory. Josh Collmenter had probably his best outing of the season limiting the potent Phillies lineup to two runs on eight hits striking out eight as well...

Photo: Toronto says don’t come around here no more, Lyle Overbay
Perhaps the terms on which Lyle Overbay left the Toronto Blue Jays weren't all that amicable. Or maybe the handwritten note (pictured above) that was taped to the door of the Pittsburgh Pirates' clubhouse at Rogers Centre was merely a good-natured gag for an old pal who had come in from out of town.
It read:
ATTN: ALL PIRATES PLAYERS WELCOME EXCEPT "LYLE OVERBAY"

Lyle Overbay says Toronto fans still bitter about ’94 strike
One of my baseball pet peeves is hearing people continue to bellyache about the 1994 strike almost two decades later. The complaints always strike me as empty and lame, because if those fans still haven't gotten over the work stoppage, it's likely they never really liked baseball in the first place and would've found another excuse to moan had the strike never happened...
