Padres' Denorfia steal home in win over Phillies

Chris Denorfia of the San Diego Padres stole home in Monday's 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Denorfia darted for home plate after Phillies lefthander Cliff Lee made a soft toss to first base. It was the first steal of home plate by a Padres player in more than six years. Mark Sweeney last accomplished the feat for San Diego on July 6, 2005.

Remembering The 1997 Trade Deadline

1997 was a glorious year. The Hale-Bopp comet made its closest approach to earth, which, fortunately, didn't mean that it collided with the earth. The first Harry Potter book debuted, briefly appearing in bookstores before disappearing from view. And President Clinton banned human cloning, ruining Branch Rickey's last, best idea for developing prospects. Meanwhile, a number...

Excuses For Garret Anderson Reflect A Bigger Problem

Despite underperforming similarly to a lot of other Dodgers players who have been blasted publicly for their play, Garret Anderson has been sheltered from the criticism, much like Mark Sweeney of years past. Based on what Joe Torre says, I would guess the Dodgers are never getting rid of Garret Anderson. "Hopefully that gets him started," said Manager Joe Torre. ...

AimPoint developer banks on the physics of putting

Mark Sweeney was just another fan on his couch when he was watching the British Open seven years ago. On one particular hole, some of the best players in the world kept making the wrong read on the same putt. They missed it every time, and this amused Sweeney.

ESPN.com - MLB - Report: Bonds failed amphetamine test last season NEW YORK -- Barry Bonds failed a test for amphetamines last season and originally blamed it on a teammate, the Daily News reported Thursday. Ishikawa? Garko? Or Guzman? Who Belongs at First For The Giants?

Let's face it. The San Francisco Giants have not had decent production from first base since JT Snow left the team after the 2005 season. Mark Sweeney? Meh. Shea Hillenbrand? Not one of Brian Sabean's finest Trade Deadline deals...Read the full article on Bleacher Report...

Nein, Nein, Oh Nein

MLB.com decided to celebrate Beatles: Rock Band Day by dressing (their website) to the nines--and posting an article about the most thrilling and scintillating part of baseball: filling out the lineup card. Yawn! Rather than regale us with statistical models determining whether pencil-filled or pen-filled cards have a higher winning percentage, or whether poor penmanship could...

See?

There are lots of stories to this game, but i'm going to focus on Joe Torre actually using his bullpen correctly for once. He brought in his best reliever (Jonathan Broxton) when it mattered most, and it paid off, even after Matt Kemp completely botched a play in right field. Not clutch? Ha.Charlie Haeger looks more and more like a legit option. Yes, he's going to get...

Game 108 vs. Brewers, Aug. 5: Pre-Game Notes

JOE TORRE Reluctant to engage in speculation regarding last night. "I just expect baseball to be played tonight." In Torre's playing days, pitchers hit him several times early in his career just to see how he'd react. Invoked names of Bob Gibson and Don...

E3 (Not E-3)

Once rivals, now united. Kind of like the Dodgers and Mark Sweeney. These 15-foot-high Diamond Vision-type screens were everywhere. One day they'll be in your living room. Right after this, Pac-Man entered the scene and ate the hanging guy. ...

Ladies Day on the Web

So the Los Angeles Dodgers have taken it upon themselves to explain the great mysteries of the Emerald Chessboard to the fairer sex. As reported by the Los Angeles Daily News (via Deadspin), former Fox pre-game host Jeanne Zelasko will call play-by-play, joined by Dodgers coach Mark Sweeney, on weekly, female-targeted radio Webcasts called [...]

Jeanne Zelasko Finally Gets To Be A Dodger Announcer, Sort Of

Jeanne Zelasko tried all offseason to become the Dodgers play-by-player, but in the end, wasn't even invited to a tryout. Well the Dodgers have decided to bring her on, but there's a catch. Well three catches actually. She'll only be working one day a week, the broadcast is online, and it's part of the Dodgers' new venture to target women listeners. DodgersWIN...

How Did We Miss the Signs? The Rich Donnelly Saga Continues

From Diamond: Wow. On a day in which they honor Maury Wills, this happens. Bases loaded with Matt Kemp on first, James Loney on second. Mark Sweeney singles to left field, scoring Jones. Third base coach Larry Bowa holds up the stop sign, and Loney stops at third. Kemp rounds second with a head of s...

This makes me mad, even though it shouldn't

First of all, let me just say that acquiring Aubrey Huff hardly would have been the answer to the Giants offensive woes. He's a solid bat, although he's not putting up the kind of offensive numbers you'd want from your 3rd baseman, or for your 1st baseman. Acquiring Huff would've put Mark Sweeney i...

Dodgers 2, Marlins 1

Mark Sweeney hit a two-run HR off Burke Badenhop in the seventh inning, erasing a 1-0 deficit that had existed since the first. Dogs and Cats Living Together

Okay, I can't find a link for this anywhere, but apparently the Giants have traded Mark Sweeney to the Dodgers for a player to be named later. Talk about making a deal with the devil.
