Player Profile #51: Matt Cain | SP | SFG
Forgive the overused cliche, but there are three certainties in life: death, taxes and Matt Cain outperforming his peripherals. It’s gotten to the point where anyone who doubts Cain just looks foolish. He’s finished five straight seasons with ERAs noticeably lower than his FIPs, and in each of those five seasons he’s pitched at least 200 innings. His walk rate has...

Cain puts Bay Area home up for sale. Is writing on the wall?
Zoinks! There’s news out of the Huffington Post this morning that San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain—who is eligible to become a free agent after this season—has put his Bay Area home up for sale.
Unless Cain and his family are just looking to upgrade (after all, he is getting quite the pay hike in the final year of his contract), this could very well be reason...

Matt Cain Unloading S.F. Bro Pad With Ikea Kitchen At Loss; $1.8MM
Matt Cain is due for a pay raise after the 2012 season and he’ll either get a huge contract from the Giants or sign elsewhere as a free agent. So what’s the logical move at this point? Sell that $1.8mm house you’ve been slumming in while playing in San Fran. He’ll make $15,000,000 this season and will probably demand at least that over 6-7 years in his next...

SF Giants Rumors: Cain Deal Could Be In The Works, Pill Could Land Last Roster Spot
Chris Haft of MLB.com answers fans questions in his inbox article. Haft expects Matt Cain and the San Francisco Giants to reach a deal during Spring Training.
This would put a lot of Giants fans at ease since Tim Lincecum is in a two-year deal, and Giants fans wouldn’t be able to stomach the possibility of losing both pitchers to free agency. There is still two years to...

SF Giants Rumors: Lincecum, Cain, And Let The Money Rain
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com says the San Francisco Giants made a $100 million offer to Tim Lincecum for fiver years. Lincecum rejected the offer, and the Giants are now focusing on a two-year or one-year deal.
The Giants and Lincecum don’t seem to be far apart on a one-year, or two-year deal. I don’t believe they will take this to an arbitration hearing. Some fans...

How much should Matt Cain get in an extension?
With the news earlier today that the Angels had signed C.J. Wilson to a 5 year $77.5 million deal it got me thinking about Matt Cain and his coming free agency next season.
What Wilson was able to get as an older and less consistent starting pitcher means that the market, should Cain become a free agent, could get pretty crazy. With that in mind I think that...

Matt Cain is not going anywhere

For those on the Matt Cain bandwagon, I heard the Giants have made it so clear they are not trading him that the Yankees have not asked about the righty in “years.”

It’s pretty evident, at this point, that the Giants intend to sign Matt Cain to an extension. It seems, in fact, as though it’s their top offseason priority, and I expect...

Giants Optimistic About New Deal With Cain
There are early indications that the Giants will have a decent or better chance to lock Matt Cain on another long-term deal, writes Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Heyman adds that the club offered Tim Lincecum a deal worth at least $100MM over five years but is now focusing on one- and two-year deals after being rebuffed.
Giants people are saying only that talks are "ongoing...

SF Giants Rumors: Matt Cain Rumor Swirling
There has been a rumor going around that the San Francisco Giants were pondering a trade that would send the Yankees Jesus Montero to the Giants in exchange for starting pitcher Matt Cain.
Is this trade going to happen? NO WAY! The Giants would not part ways with Cain for a catcher. Buster Posey is expected to be back behind the dish at the start of the 2012 season.
We know...

Pondering a Matt Cain extension
A week ago, Larry Baer sent out a letter to San Francisco Giants fans that was ultimately an apology of sorts, in which he mused about 2011 and the Giants’ commitment to the future. One paragraph in the letter details the means through which the organization is striving to maintain a contending team, and the last item particularly stands out:
That remarkable send-off still...

If standing in line for three hours to get an autograph is your thing, then no doubt you had a great time at the San Francisco Giants’ annual FanFest today.

Yanks Might Be Waiting on Cain
It's been a strangely quiet offseason for the New York Yankees, and there's a theory out there that such silence should concern the San Francisco Giants.
Why? Matt Cain remains on track to be a free agent after 2012, that's why.
Tyler Kepner of the New York Times proposed this week that the Yankees aren't being silent because they're poor, scared or even satisfied...

Game Recap: Cain pitches well, loses
Padres 3, Giants 1.
Matt Cain reached two milestones tonight (h/t @SFGiantsFans): his 200th career start, and his fifth consecutive season with 200+ IP. Unfortunately, it was a typical Matt Cain start; that is, he pitched well, but due to a lack of run support, got the loss. Cain now has a career record of 68-72, making him the only starter in history (min. 1000 IP) with a losing...

Could the Mets Benefit from a Crowded Free Agent Pitching Market in 2013?
The Mets rotation, for better or for worse, is set for 2012: Santana (or replacement), Pelfrey, Dickey, Gee and Niese. The Mets also look between the end of this year and 2014 to add several young pitchers, like Familia, Harvey, Wheeler and maybe Mejia.
So I wonder if the Mets could benefit from what will be a crowded All-Star pitching Free Agent market next season. With Edwin Jackson...

Extension Candidate: Matt Cain
Heading into this offseason, pundits seemed unable to agree whether C.J. Wilson or Yu Darvish was the most desirable pitcher available to MLB teams. While a case could be made for either hurler, they likely would've been battling for second place had Giants right-hander Matt Cain not signed a contract extension delaying his free agency by a year.
