Inside the Numbers: Indians lineup could be strong in 2012

Jason Kipnis (Photo: AP)The Indians acquisition of Casey Kotchman gives an answer (unsatisfactory to some) to the off-season-long question: Who’s on first? But what does this move spell out for the rest of the roster? Presumably, Kotchman will be given the chance to play 1B on an everyday basis and Matt LaPorta (proud owner of one remaining option) will be asked to compete in Columbus...

Tribe Will Chase Detroit Without Michael Brantley, Done for Season

I think that a number of people follow professional athletes on twitter hoping to find evidence of the fact that players are rooting for the same things fans are.  It elevates the whole level of fandom, in some ways, to know that the players on teams you’re cheering for are right there with you - living and dying with every pitch, shot, run, win, loss, or whatever...

Michael Brantley: Cleveland’s Unsung Hero

Down two runs in the bottom of ninth inning, the Indians were running out of chances. Looking to continue their dominance at home, the Tribe once again needed a late inning miracle, this time against Seattle. Michael Brantley confidently stepped to the plate to lead off the inning, and belted a double to left-center. Though this would later be overshadowed by Travis Hafner’s incredible...

Some (Very) Early Thoughts on the MLB Trade Market

For several years now, the MLB trade season has been met with something between apathy and dread in Cleveland —both springing from the resignation that the Indians would again be “sellers,” trading any assets they had to reload the farm system for a new cycle of contention. This season is shaping up a bit differently.  As the team continues to hang around in the weak AL Central...

Diamondbacks 6 Indians 4: Arizona Takes Down The Mafia

It was bound to happen at some point. The Tribe relievers, dubbed “The Bullpen Mafia,” have been as close to perfect as you can get this season. The blown games have come few and far between for this group. No matter the situation, they always seem to get the job done. During last night’s 6-4 loss in Phoenix, the pen was done in late not once, but twice. This was a close game...

Stuck In First: Considering the Indians’ Options at First Base

Without doing anything to you and me, let’s assume a few things. First, let’s assume that the roster for the 2012 Indians is, if not set in stone, then at least not likely to undergo significant additions.  Let’s also assume that Michael Brantley will open the season in left field and spend most of his time in the outfield this season.  Further, let’s assume that the Indians...

It’s Over In Cleveland: Brantley Injury Is Final Blow To Indians Playoff Chances

The Cleveland Indians are currently 65-65, in 3rd place in the AL Central, 6.5 games out of the playoffs. This is quite a fall for a team that started the year by going 18-8 in April and 14-12 in May. Since their great start however, Cleveland has been dropping in the standings and losing players to injury left and right. Even the trade deadline acquisition of Ubaldo Jimenez...

Has Michael Brantley Arrived?

Coming into the 2011 season, the Indians’ return on the CC Sabathia trade had been disappointingly small. Not only had centerpiece Matt LaPorta failed to make an impact at the major league level, but Zach Jackson washed out early, Rob Bryson still toils in the minor leagues, and the second-biggest piece, Michael Brantley, had struggled mightily in his short time with the big...
