Defense more than holds its own in ASU's scrimmage

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Ahead of Saturday's scrimmage at Sun Devil Stadium, Arizona State coach Todd Graham was "very concerned." He didn't know if his defense, in rebuilding mode after losing nine starters from last season, could stop an offense loaded with returning players. To Graham's surprise, the defense did more than hold its own Saturday, the rough midway point...

Hornet Without a Stinger

In an expected ‘tune-up’ game for the Arizona State Sun Devils, the Big Sky Conference Sacramento State Hornets provided little or no resistance tonight in a 55-0 loss to ASU. In a typical September game time temperature of 106, ASU quarterback Taylor Kelly put up career high numbers of 23-31 for 300 yards and five touchdowns. A Sacramento State prolonged drive of 16 plays...

Some surprises emerge on ASU's first depth chart

Arizona State released an updated depth chart for the 2013 season Tuesday night, and while it came with no big surprises, it did indicate a few position battles might be settled. You can view the full depth chart here, but keep in mind depth charts do not always translate perfectly onto the field. Perhaps most notable on the depth chart is walk-on junior Dom Vizzare listed as the...

Kelly pleased with spring progress

What a difference a year makes. In spring 2012, quarterback Taylor Kelly was third on the Arizona State depth chart behind Mike Bercovici and Michael Eubank. After winning the job in the fall camp and leading the Sun Devils to an 8-5 record last season, the junior has a strong grasp on the first string role and doesn’t seem to be doing anything this spring to relinquish it.

ASU's Kelly focusing on finer points this spring

TEMPE, Ariz. -- This time a year ago, Arizona State quarterback Taylor Kelly was battling just to maintain relevance, largely forgotten in favor of fellow signal callers Michael Eubank and Mike Bercovici. This year, Kelly enjoys the luxury of incumbency. Firmly entrenched as the Sun Devils' quarterback, he's been able to work this spring on polishing the finer points of...

Bercovici showing no rust after redshirt year

There’s no question that quarterback Mike Bercovici has been one of Arizona State’s spring practice’s standouts. Arguably the purest thrower of the unit, the sophomore who redshirted last year, has been pushing incumbent Taylor Kelly for the starting spot on this 2013 Sun Devil squad.

Second act of Graham era begins at ASU

In his first season as Arizona State's head coach, Todd Graham won over a skeptical fan base and delivered the school's first bowl victory since 2005. It wasn't easy, but putting together a worthy second act may be even tougher. With spring practice beginning Tuesday, Graham and the Sun Devils come armed with many assets but nearly as many questions. Spring practice...

Notebook: ASU hopes to redshirt Bercovici
