Mariners Series Recap: Among a pointless series against the A’s, Hope is rising for the Mariners future

Your Seattle Mariners hosted the Oakland A’s this week in Safeco Field, and wound up taking the series 2-1. It was a rough series for the starting pitching staff, with both Hisashi Iwakuma and Mike Montgomery getting roughed up. Nelson Cruz continued his torrid pace however, proving to be one of the best free agent acquisitions in the league this year. While the season may be pretty...

Is Erasmo Ramirez for Real?

Every year, a number of starting pitchers seemingly come out of nowhere to become significant contributors at the major-league level. Sometimes, like in the case of Jacob deGrom, the sudden evolution is real and sustainable. In the case of the majority of short-term success stories, the league adjusts, the pitcher can’t respond to those adjustments, and he disappears from the...

Watch: Heat-seeking baseball climbs up Mike Napoli's leg, knocks helmet off his head

During the first inning of Wednesday's Rangers-Mariners game, a Mike Montgomery breaking ball into the dirt apparently decided it has some beef with Rangers first baseban Mike Napoli. Also, physics happened. Montgomery's pitch kissed the ground a few inches before Napoli, bounced against his ankle then went flying upward at a rate of speed fast enough that when it hit underneath...

Who Is the Real Mike Montgomery?

Every year, a number of starting pitchers seemingly come out of nowhere to become significant contributors at the major-league level. Sometimes, like in the case of, say, Jacob deGrom, the sudden evolution at the major-league level is real and sustainable. In the case of the majority of these short-term success stories, the league adjusts, the pitcher is unable to, and either disappears...

Young Guns — Taijuan Walker and Mike Montgomery

Seattle Mariners Starting Pitching Continues To Flourish It’s very difficult to get excited about the 2015 Seattle Mariners season at this point.  This was supposed to be our year.  Finally we’d be back in the playoffs.  Felix would pitch in the post season for the first time and just maybe we’d have a baseball world championship trophy come to Seattle. The writing is on...

2015 Fantasy Baseball: Rookie Report – Heaney, Matz and Montgomery

Andrew Heaney – Heaney debuted in the Majors last year for the Marlins, but he struggled in his 29.1 innings, allowing six home runs. So he was traded twice this offseason and ended up an Angel after being dealt to the Dodgers from Miami. Heaney’s 4.71 ERA in Triple-A this year looks bad, but he had some bad luck due to a high BABIP and low left-on-base rate. His FIP was a nice...

Fantasy Roundup: Mike Montgomery and Taijuan Walker

There’s a lot of buzz about how well two members of the Mariners rotation have pitched. Those pitchers are Taijuan Walker and Mike Montgomery. Of the two I believe one of the breakouts has a shot at being legitimate and other looks like a fluke. Mike Montgomery In Montgomery’s last two starts he’s been fantastic – against the Royals and Padres, respectively, with two complete...

Seattle Mariners: The Mariners Half Sweep the only team that hits worse than them

Mike Montgomery mowing down Padres The Mariners got the week off to a very good start, with a pair of shutout wins in sweeping the San Diego Padres.  Well, really only half a sweep as it was only 2 games but we will take what we can get.  The games were dominated by pitching although there was a bit of offense to go with it. In the first game on Tuesday, Mike Montgomery threw...

Seattle Mariners: Mike Montgomery goes full monty– twice

In 164 minor league games, Mike Montgomery had zero complete game shutouts. In six major league games, he has two– both in his last two starts. It isn’t beginner’s luck anymore, it’s just a rookie that’s pitching well for a team that desperately needs him to. Or, as the Mariners’ twitter account puts it, it’s #MoneyMonty. Back-to-back shutouts is awfully impressive...

Mike Montgomery A Pleasant Surprise For The Seattle Mariners

It’s been a long road to the big leagues for Mike Montgomery. Drafted by the Kansas City Royals with the 36th pick in the first round of the 2008 amateur draft, Montgomery toiled through 842.1 innings in three minor league systems before getting the call this year. He was packaged with Wil Myers and Jake Odorizzi by the Royals in order to acquire two decent seasons of James Shields...

Mike Montgomery finally living up to the 2012 hype

It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was talking about how bright the future of the Kansas City Royals rotation looked with the potential emergence of two young left handed pitchers. When I look back, I realized it was January of 2012 and, for the record, the two pitchers I was referring to were current Royals LHP Danny Duffy and Seattle Mariners LHP Mike Montgomery. Duffy was...
