MIKE RILEY AND linebackers coach Trent Bray had an in-home this week with Devante Downs, a sought linebacker/running back prospect out of Mountlake Terrace, Wash. Here's what he had to say about Oregon State, recruiting, his timetable and more..
CORVALLIS – It’s already a discussion that’s sprung up on the BF.C message boards: Mike Riley and Danny Langsdorf have some thinking to do on their running backs. For me, the Civil War cinched it – Oregon State is a much better football team when they have one main guy pounding the turf rather than two and OSU needs to find “that guy” to get it done. And they really don’t...
One Texas family has come up with a very creative way of turning an eyesore into a landmark. Check out the “Hook ‘em Horns” tree stump below, which was carved by a “chainsaw artist” – it’s spot-on. Oregon State head coach Mike Riley would surely be proud.
The Longhorns dispatched of Texas Tech on Thanksgiving and take on Baylor in a huge Big 12 showdown next Saturday...
Mike Riley left the door open for the Ducks with a fatal error of clock management. They scored too quickly on the fly sweep with the ball and a chance to run out the clock for a last-second field goal. 1st and ten, trailing 30-29 with 1:44 to play, and a running game Oregon hadn't stopped all game. Many coaches would have pounded it off tackle, ground out one or two more first...
In a game between two ruined teams in a ruined season, winning will come down to which team can summon optimism and competitive pride.
This week Oregon State head coach Mike Riley told the media, "The team that handles wherever they are right now the best has the best chance to look good and play well," Riley said. "Now these guys are really good, so we're going...
Oregon state coach Mike Riley and Oregon coach Mark Helfrich don't need to be schooled about the significance of the Civil War to the state.
Riley grew up in Corvallis and was the son of an assistant coach for the Beavers, while Helfrich was raised in Coos Bay, on the southern Oregon coast.
''I was an Oregon fan and certainly growing up there was that back-and-forth...

Lord have mercy on Oregon State coach Mike Riley’s Thanksgiving turkey. It’s certainly common for people to use an electronic carving knife to slice up dinner for the holiday, but a chainsaw?
In all seriousness, OSU has a new tradition of cranking it “like a chainsaw” between the third and fourth quarters of home games. It’s just that this photo is, well, a little terrifying...
First a deflating loss against Eastern Washington, then a six-game winning streak, and now a three-game slump.
Oregon State's season so far has been uneven at best, but the Beavers are heading into their final two regular-season games looking for the positives to offset the negatives.
''I think there's some disappointment, but this is a good group,'' coach...

Oregon State rallied from a slow start, pulling within 10 points of No. 21 Arizona State in the third quarter.
The Beavers couldn't sustain their momentum, hurt by too many mistakes.
Sean Mannion threw interceptions for four of Oregon State's five turnovers and the Beavers stumbled after gaining momentum in the third quarter to lose their third straight, 30-17 to the Sun...

The schedule makers have not done Arizona State any favors in the Sun Devils' bid to win the Pac-12 South.
For the third straight week, the 21st-ranked Sun Devils will be facing a team coming off its bye week. Arizona State managed to win the first two, but facing Oregon State and its juggernaut offense after a week off will not be a lot of fun.
''I'd be a liar...

SAY THIS ABOUT Oregon State recruiting – they have great conviction in their own evaluations. Most BF.C followers have heard that before about Mike Riley and his staff but if you wanted tangible proof, there’s probably no more shining an example than Yanni Demogerontas, on offensive line prospect out of Illinois who went black and orange this weekend while on his official visit to Corvallis.
OREGON STATE THIS SEASON has run a lot of plays for a team that doesn’t run a high-paced offense. But that changed against USC, said Mike Riley and it wasn’t difficult when reviewing the game tape to spot the two areas that hurt the Beavs most on offense.
They sucked us all in, didn‘t they? Won six games in row, passing game was flowing and the defense turned the corner by creating turnovers on a regular basis. Even the special teams started blocking better. Yep, Oregon State football was looking good. Then, brain cells frazzled as someone turned off the electricity to the cerebral areas of the Beaver power brokers.
College football programs always try to highlight and promote what they do best — that’s the reason we always see schools fighting over titles such as ‘Wide Receiver U’ or ‘Linebacker U.’ Showing success, and particularly dominance at a specific position, can really help out a school’s recruiting and standing with young players.

CORVALLIS – Mike Riley on Sunday night delivered the latest injury update on the Beavs coming out of the bruising battle with Stanford. But there's no time to ponder missed opportunities -- it’s a short week and the Beavers play host to USC on Friday night. Accordingly, OSU's practice regimen leading up to Southern Cal (TV: ESPN2, 6:00 p.m.) will change in a couple of...
As we are now past the midpoint in the Oregon State football season, Beaver nation can turn their eyes to more meaningful games. Each contest from here on out will affect which bowl game OSU will play in. With the colossal affair against Stanford looming this weekend, every game will be showcase time to substantiate their position in the conference as well as any ranking which may...
THE IMPORTANCE OF BALANCE. Mike Riley talks about it virtually non-stop. The No. 1 topic this offseason was “Who the heck is going to be our QB?” but No. 2 with a bullet was, “Are we going to be better at running the football?” After all, conventional wisdom is that without balance, you are destined for failure. And Oregon State is one-dimensional, without any semblance...
Mike Riley really just loves his In-N-Out Burger. Last year the Oregon State football coach had his team stop off at the In-N-Out by LAX following their win in SoCal against UCLA. On Saturday he expedited the process and had the In-N-Out delivered to the airport following the Beavers’ 49-17 win at Cal in Berkeley. […]
Your browser does not support iframes. Some college coaches hate Twitter, while others have embraced it. Mike Riley of Oregon State is certainly one of the latter. The Beavers head coach has carved out a nice career for himself in…Read more →
Oregon State coach Mike Riley is attempting his very first "Tweet Film Tuesday," in which high school players tweet his recruiting department their game film using the hashtag, #GoBeavs.
Some college football coaches are a little bit better with the whole concept of utilizing “new media” than others. Oregon State coach Mike Riley showed today that he’s on the right side of the proverbial fence.
Riley and Oregon State are starting a new tradition titled “Tweet Film Tuesday” in which they ask high school players to tweet them their highlight reels with the...
In 2008, Oregon State head coach Mike Riley assigned the play-calling responsibilities to current offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf. That first year with Langsdorf calling the shots, the Beavers enjoyed a 9-4 season, including an upset of #1 ranked USC and a victory in the Sun Bowl over Pittsburgh. In the final AP Poll, the Beavers were ranked #18 in the country.
The SEC has been called the best conference in college football. With seven straight national championships under its belt, it's a tough argument to counter.
The one knock about the SEC is that it's top-heavy. While teams like Alabama, LSU, Florida and Georgia always seem to be good, the lower-end teams end up being punching bags for everyone else.
The Pac-12, at least...

Neither Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre nor Oregon State coach Mike Riley are sure what they'll see on Saturday from the Buffaloes.
Colorado won its first two games under new head coach MacIntyre. But then deadly flooding around Boulder earlier this month forced the cancellation of a home game against Fresno State.
The players chipped in with the recovery efforts before a bye...

OREGON STATE WILL have a new starting middle linebacker this week, Mike Riley said Sunday night. The Beavs, they are beat up, with a very lengthy injury list coming out of San Diego State. As for the miscues in the game, there were many, and Riley didn’t mince words.
