Orioles interested in Nick Johnson
The Baltimore Orioles are reportedly interested in signing former Major League first baseman Nick Johnson to a minor league contract. Johnson was at one time the top prospect in the Yankees farm system. He never reached the lofty expectations of others but did have several solid seasons for the Washington Nationals. Johnson has battled injuries throughout his career. He missed...

Cleveland Indians Sign On-Base Machine Nick Johnson
The Cleveland Indians have agreed to a minor league deal with free agent first baseman Nick Johnson.
Johnson, 32, is an absolute on-base machine when healthy. He has a .401 career OBP and got on base at a .426 clip in 2009. Over the last three seasons he’s posted a 19 percent walk rate, including 24 free passes in as many games last year with the New York Yankees.

Heyman: Yanks not sure if Johnson will return this year
Via Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, we learn that the Yankees are currently unsure as to whether or not Nick Johnson, signed in the offseason to be the team’s DH, will be to return this season. This, of course, isn’t a surprise when you consider Johnson’s checkered health history. Heyman goes on to add that the Yankees will search for another hitter as a result, presumably...

Yankees Rumors: Cubs Looking Into Nick Johnson
Via the Chicago Sun-Times:
With a payroll budget that figures to leave little room for big-shot free agents, indications are that general manager Jim Hendry is focusing more on the likes of lefty-hitting Nick Johnson — if the medicals look good enough — for first base and is keeping an eye on former Cub Kerry Wood‘s status for a possible bullpen job.

Nick Johnson exits game with sore wrist
In the 5th inning of today’s game, which is still underway, Marcus Thames pinch-hit for the Yankees’ designated hitter, Nick Johnson. In the 6th inning, we learned that Johnson had been pulled due to a “sore right wrist.” Now, this could be a big problem for the Yankees given that Johnson played in 38 games in 2008, only to miss the rest of the season after tearing a tendon...

Nick Johnson’s mechanical alterations at the root of his slump?
Here’s an interesting bit of text via Bryan Hoch from early March:
The goal is to cut out the movement of Johnson’s back foot in the box, which should help him generate power.
“I’m just trying not to drift, trying to be more direct,” Johnson said. “I’m working on turning my back foot. When I don’t do it, I slide. That’s what I...

Bad News: Nick Johnson Feels Pain in Wrist
The other day the Yankees got bad bullpen news when Alfredo Aceves suffered a setback and today they get some more as Nick Johnson felt pain in his wrist while taking batting practice. He is being sent back to New York for further tests, this could mean the end of his season.
Nick Johnson has clearly become an experiment gone bad. Some injuries were expected, but he’s barely...

Nick Johnson could need surgery
Here’s the news via Chad Jennings of LoHud:
Here’s the latest on Nick Johnson. After going on the DL in Boston, he got a cortisone shot and the Yankees are waiting to see if that solves the problem in his wrist. Brian Cashman said that the shot does the trick roughly 50 percent of the time.“We’re hoping that works,” Cashman said. “But if it doesn’t, we’ll have...

I’m glad the Yankees did not pick up Nick Johnson’s option
It was more common sense on the Yankees’ part… this off-season. I wish they would of known that before the season started in 2010. If they did, I’m sure they would of had a better option at DH in 2010.
Nick Johnson is always hurt. When the Yankees picked up Nick Johnson last year, I was pretty furious. I told my family that he’s going to get hurt and guaranteed...

Yankees Notes: Starting Pitchers, Castellon, Johnson, Joba
The Yankees won their final game before the All-Star Break, beating the Mariners 8-2 behind an impressive CC Sabathia and a 4-for-5 day from the red hot Mark Teixeira. The Yankees have the best record in baseball at 56-32.
Here are some notes:
The Yankees appear to be out of the starting pitcher market now that Cliff Lee has been dealt.

Fools! Johnson Contemplating Surgery, Could Be Out ‘Till August
I didn’t like it, you didn’t like it, but Brian Cashman liked it. When Cashman signed 32-year-old 1B/DH Nick Johnson to a 1-year, 5.5 million dollar deal over the off season, you could sense problems coming. Sure enough, Johnson headed to the DL May 8th due to an inflamed wrist, his tenth trip in his nine seasons.

New York Yankees unlikely to exercise Nick Johnson’s team option for 2011?
Nick Johnson’s chances of returning to the Yankees in 2011 is now officially lost according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News. He will undergo another surgery on his wrist – the second of the year.

From the Yankees PR department:The Yankees today declined the options for Lance Berkman, Nick Johnson and Kerry Wood; excercised option for Andrew BrackmanThose options were $11M for Wood, $15M for Berkman, and $5.5M for Johnson, so these were obvious decisions for the Yanks. Do The Yankees and White Sox Match Up?
Rumors have spread about the White Sox looking to sell, now that it is apparent that the White Sox will not compete this year. The Yankees don’t have any glaring needs. They could use a DH-type to replace Nick Johnson, especially if it turns out Johnson will miss the season. They could also perhaps use some bullpen help or some outfield depth. Neither is pressing, however....
