Chicago Cubs, Maholm close on deal
The Cubs, continuing to rework their starting rotation, are close to signing free-agent left-hander Paul Maholm, according to a major-league source.
Maholm, 29, went 6-14 with a 3.66 ERA for the Pirates last season, ending the year on the DL with shoulder trouble. The Pirates paid him a $750,000 buyout rather than exercise his $9.75 million option.

Bucs wanted Bedard instead of Maholm
When Paul Maholm signed with the Cubs as a free agent for one year and $4.75 million last week, many Pittsburgh fans wondered why the Pirates didn't step up to keep maybe the most consistent starting pitcher they've had in the past decade.

2012 Fantasy Baseball: The Pittsburgh Pirates starting rotation preview
Jeff Karstens (credits below) The Pirates always seem to have a pitcher or two you can find in the bargain bin who turns out to have fantasy value.James McDonald and Paul Maholm are among the pitchers who have posted good fantasy numbers on a bad Pirates team in the past few years.Last year, it was Charlie Morton and Jeff Karstens who rewarded those fantasy owners who likely took...

Cubs agree to 1-year deal with LHP Paul Maholm
The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year contract with left-handed pitcher Paul Maholm, adding depth to their starting rotation.
The deal announced Tuesday includes a club option for 2013.
The 29-year-old Maholm was limited by a left shoulder strain last season with Pittsburgh and made 26 starts, going 6-14 despite a 3.66 ERA. He was 53-73 over seven seasons with the Pirates...

Paul Maholm Officially Coming To The Chicago Cubs
It was reported a few weeks ago that the Cubs were in talks with free agent lefty Paul Maholm as a cheap option to add to the starting rotation.
Now, it looks as if that is finally set to happen. Early reports trickled out that the Cubs and Maholm were “close” to agreeing to a contract, and according to Maholm’s Twitter account (which is verified) he is set to join the Cubs...

Maholm, Chen sign, pitching pool grows smaller
As expected, Paul Maholm signed a one-year deal with the Cubs with an option for 2013. It's worth $4.25 million, which is a nice value for the Cubs and certainly a price I wouldn't have argued with had he signed the deal with the Pirates. The other pitching news today is that the Orioles signed Taiwanese lefty We-Yi Chen to a three-year deal. The Pirates showed at least passing...

Pirates talking to Paul Maholm
Dejan Kovacevic is reporting this morning that the Pirates have "had talks" with Paul Maholm about a return to Pittsburgh, but that any such scenario is pretty "unlikely." I don't think that there's really anything too surprising about that report: bringing Maholm back makes sense to me in the same way that signing Jeff Francis would, and you can argue...

Free Agent Rumors: Paul Maholm, Dan Wheeler
Two Pittsburgh Pirates free agent rumors, after a few weeks of little to no news:
-Dejan Kovacevic reports that the Pirates have had discussions with Paul Maholm, although a return seems unlikely. Kovacevic mentions that the Pirates are looking to upgrade the rotation, but that those additions will probably come from non-roster invitees, rather than a high profile addition. We heard...

So much for Maholm’s veteran leadership, signs with Cubs
It was pretty clear that Paul Maholm’s services were no longer needed wanted by the Pirates when they decided not to re-up the lefty’s contract a few months back.
They did stir up talks again with the 29-year-old free agent about staying in the Burgh but nothing ever materialized. Maholm love this city and said numerous times that he wanted to remain with the team and...

Cubs have interest in Paul Maholm
MLBTR had a post yesterday that the Cubs are in negotiations with Paul Maholm for a spot in their 2012 rotation. Earlier in the offseason, the Pirates declined Maholm’s 2012 option for $9.75 million. Based on the market for pitchers like Chris Capuano (2 years, $10 million from the Dodgers), Bruce Chen (2 years, $9 million from the Royals), and Erik Bedard (1 year, $4.5...

Cubs to Add Paul Maholm
Everyone has been waiting for weeks for the Cubs to trade Matt Garza and now... they still have to wait. What they don't have to wait for is the Cubs to replace Garza in the rotation as they look to have lined up his replacement by signing free agent pitcher Paul Maholm today.
Financial terms of the deal have not been released yet, but this definitely looks like a smart move...

Did the Pirates Miss An Opportunity with Maholm?
Maholm was at his highest value in early July, and no one wanted him traded.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will have a tough decision to make this off-season when it comes to Paul Maholm. The left hander has an option for $9.75 M, with a $750 K buyout. Coming in to the year, the option number seemed high, based on the results of Maholm’s previous two years, in which he combined...

Pirates won’t pick up Paul Maholm’s option
After Paul Maholm hit the DL in August, many suggested that he might never throw another pitch for the Pirates. It looks like that will indeed be the case.
Maholm has a $9.75M option for 2012, which is probably a bit expensive but certainly not out of the question for a decent, relatively reliable lefty starting pitcher. Before the season, I thought it was a lock to be turned down...

Does a Big Free Agent Make Sense For the Pirates?
The 2011-2012 off-season has been somewhat amusing. At the start of the off-season, the big focus was on the options of Paul Maholm, Ryan Doumit, Chris Snyder, and Ronny Cedeno. The Pirates declined all four options, much to the dismay of Pirates fans, who didn’t think the team could replace those four players on the free agent market.
The Pirates replaced Cedeno with Clint...

Cubs Reportedly Talking To Free Agent Paul Maholm
It looks like the Cubs might be getting their rotation sorted out and finding that left-handed pitcher they’ve been needing to add.
After floating out names like Joe Saunders or even Mark Buehrle, the Cubs have been talking with a much more affordable option in Pittsburgh Pirates free agent hurler Paul Maholm.

Cubs interested in Paul Maholm
The Chicago Cubs are reportedly very interested in adding free agent left-hander Paul Maholm to the starting rotation. Garza is the most likely to be dealt with the Yankees...

Why Aren’t the Pirates Keeping Paul Maholm?
It seems that every year there is a big story in the off-season that always leads to the same result. The Pittsburgh Pirates make a move, the move is unfavorable to the fan base, and the immediate reaction is to speculate on what this means for the remainder of the off-season. Usually the thought is “the Pirates will do nothing, and will go in to the following season with...

The Last Pitch Paul Maholm Ever Threw as a Pirate
Now that Paul Maholm is officially not getting a new deal from the Pirates this offseason, it's time to start thinking about him in the past tense. Maholm had a pretty solid career for the Pirates, and was one of our best players over the last five years (although that is hardly saying anything). August 17, 2011 was the last start Maholm made for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and...
