The Pirates were shut out for the league-leading bazillionth time Sunday afternoon. “At least we can go watch a good team now, the Steelers,” fans like me must have thought after the game. We know how that one turned out.

After beating the Nationals in a 12-7 shootout, then beating them in a weird extra inning game that they certainly deserved to lose, the Pirates completed the sweep picked up their third straight win against the Nats with a 2-1 win in a pitcher's duel last night. Paul Maholm threw...

Hopefully, Neal Huntington's Pirates can keep putting runs on the board this afternoon. It's Paul Maholm's turn on the mound and he's generally been very good inside the friendly confines of PNC Park this season. He gets the same lineup behind him today that put 11...

The Pirates and Rockies locked horns in a pitcher’s duel this evening. Unfortunately, it ended with a painful bang.
Paul Maholm was lights out (well, he was falling behind guys and allowing lots of contact, but got outs, outs, and more outs), going seven innings and allowing...

There were 5 shutouts in baseball last night. But they were all of the new-age pitcher variety. Nobody went the full distance — not even Dusty’s guy! But let’s start in Pittsburgh.

The Pirates followed a depressing loss with a boring one, going 0-2 on the day against their companions in the NL Central basement.
Paul Maholm threw 42 pitches in a nightmarish first inning and trailed 3-0 right from the getgo. Meanwhile, Johny Cueto returned from injury and a huge...

I didn’t get to see today’s win over the Reds, but Paul Maholm’s line was pretty self explanatory:
6 IP, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 H, 4 K
That lowered his spring ERA to a clean 0.46. 6 innings is the longest start by a Pirate pitcher so far this spring.
It should not come as a surprise [...]
