Moments In Time: Our Choices! The WORST Canucks Draft Picks
Vancouver Canucks blogger C-Mac dips into the Moments In Time series at NWSB for his next blog post about the Vancouver Canucks WORST ever NHL draft picks. He ranks them from 5 thru 1. Petr Nedved, Jason Herter, Patrick White, Libor Polasek, and Dan Woodley all make the list. Would you make any changes to this list? Who would you add?

Vinny Prospal Proud Of His 1000 NHL Games
from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch, Theo Fleury, in his book Playing with Fire, writes that if he were an NHL general manager he would draft Canadian juniors exclusively because they “get it.” Although the league is less Canada-centric than it was in the previous century, Fleury’s line of thinking still runs on the edges of mainstream thought.
Vinny Prospal is the...

Anniversary of a bizarre day in Rangers history
Not sure why I always remember this day.
July 15, 1994. That was the shocking day that Mike Keenan, on a Toronto TV station, announced he was leaving the Rangers because of a breach in his contract. The Rangers were late with a bonus check, so Keenan, a month and a day after winning the Stanley Cup, was bolting.
The Garden, of course, was furious. Though some of it was fake as...

Eklund: Jagr's Hattrick Eliminates USA. What Four NHL Teams Would Take a Shot...
Remember the 1990 Draft Big Four?
Owen Nolan, Mike Ricci, Petr Nedved, and Jaromir Jagr....
Well one of those four still has it in spades, and just put up a three spot against Team USA in the Worlds in helping to eliminate the Americans 4-0. And while there were already rumors Jagr could return to the NHL next year, today's game will absolutely increase the talk...

Scott Scissons
The 1990 NHL Entry Draft goes down as one of the strongest in history. There was not a lot to choose from in the top five picks. Power forward Owen Nolan went first to Quebec, followed by super-skilled center Petr Nedved second to Vancouver. Humongous Keith Primeau, the surprising upstart darling amongst scouts at the top end of the draft, went third overall to Detroit. Mike Ricci...

Some game notes
From the Rangers:
Game Update – New York Rangers at Buffalo Sabres, Oct. 9
Derek Stepan is the first Ranger in franchise history to record a hat trick in his NHL debut.
His three goals tied the Rangers’ franchise record for most goals in an opening-night game, becoming just the second player in team history to record a hat trick in the season opener. Ron Murphy also tallied...

B’s wrap up pre-season
PRAGUE -- The Bruins close their pre-season schedule tonight in the Czech town of Liberec, some 90 minutes north of Prague, against HC Liberec, a top-level club led by ex-NHL star Petr Nedved. Tim Thomas will be in nets for the B's, who open the regular season Saturday against the ...

Doug Gilmour did it. So did Felix Potvin. Bryan Berard and Dimitri Yushkevich did it at the same time. When Keith Tkachuk did it, Cam Neely went to the media to question Tkachuk's values.Petr Nedved once did it for nearly 18 months straight and Alexi Yashin did it so frequently fans, GMs and team-mates were more than a little sore. But nobody seems to be doing it much anymore.For...

Defecting to NY
I’m picturing Petr Nedved coming over from his native Czech to Canada for the World Juniors and defecting, hiding in Canada and never going back, becoming a Canadian citizen.
I don’t want to make light of that, because what Nedved did was extremely courageous and serious.
But I can’t help but imagine all these Boneheads parachuting into town this weekend for tomorrow...

PENS DROP A DOUBLEHEADER
As I said yesterday, no one does losing like the Pirates...and no one does multiple-OT games quite like the Penguins. Games like last night historically make household names out of Keith Primeau, Petr Nedved, and Petr Sykora (now that I think about it, there must be something about the name "Petr" in games like these). Unfortunately, we can now add Ottawa defenseman Matt "Two...

Mock Draft: 2003...
Ah, the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, arguably the deepest since 1990, when the top 5 were Owen Nolan, Petr Nedved, Keith Primeau, Mike Ricci, and Jaromir Jagr (also in the 1st round: Darryl Sydor at 7, Derian Hatcher at 8, Brad May at 14, Keith Tkachuk at 19, Martin Brodeur at 20, Bryan Smolinksi at 21).And of course, we know what the Rangers and Islanders did. Hugh Jessiman at 12th overall...

The Carolina Hurricanes upset the Boston Bruins, the top team in the Eastern Conference, with a seventh game victory Thursday night. One of the key factors was the Hurricanes' ability to control the Bruins defensively. Pittsburgh and Washington, United (in Successful Rebuilding)
The Capitals and Penguins are viewed, understandably, as fierce rivals, but with this second-round meeting in the 2009 NHL postseason, they should also be assessed as Grade A exhibits in how durably quality hockey clubs can be assembled. The fanbase in Toronto, most particularly, should pay attention. And you Rangers' fans might not want to dose off in the upper deck of one of the...

A Past Agony May Offer a Glimmer of Hope for the Present
Let this portion of the past be prologue this postseason: the first-round series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals in April 1996. Why would I invoke the painful memory of a six-game setback to them, now? Well for starters, just living to see a game 6 this April would be a welcomed development. But that remarkable chapter in Caps-Pens playoff lore offers some...

THE GREATEST PLAYS IN PITTSBURGH SPORTS HISTORY
ESPN's Dave Dameshek and I discussed the greatest plays in Pittsburgh sports history in our upcoming Friday podcast, and that's one of those conversations that could've lasted all night.I suggested we take Dave's list and throw it to the Mondesi's House readers for discussion, so please, check it out and add as you feel necessary, because as we both recognized, this is undoubtedly...

Senators acquire headcase Comrie in exchange for headcase Kaigdorov
After losing out on Petr Nedved, the Senators have acquired the center that they have been wanting, with the absence of Jason Spezza and Mike Fischer due to injuries. Mike Comrie has 7 goals and 20 points in 24 games this season. Comrie, who I have found to be quite an injury-prone, overpaid enigma, is making $3 million this season, and will be a free agent in the summer. The 26...

The Difference...
I've probably spoken about this before, but there is a stark difference in this year's Rangers team as opposed to years past.A Before the lockout, the Rangers were notorious for leaving points on the table. It was a few years ago, so my memory of those lean years is (thankfully) fading, but in 2002-03 and 03-04, I used to try to keep track of how many games the Rangers blew when...

So Are Both NY Teams Going to Have a Number 93 This Season?...
This may just be crazy talk, and in a few months we might be laughing at the mere fact that we were even thinking about it (much like when we wondered if Dave Scatchard would be a Ranger, or how we were going to fit Michael Peca in under the Cap last year), but can Petr Nedved really become a Ranger?First off, if you have told me in June that in the second preseason game of the year...

Olympic Free Agents?
Unsurprisingly, Becky Hammon, a ten year WNBA veteran and four time All Star, will be playing in the Beijing Olympics. But what is surprising is the South Dakota native, often described as the typical "All American Girl," will be suiting up for Russia and not the USA. Hammons decision has gained great attention and created a big controversy with US National Coach recently...
