Ex-Cubs pitcher Randy Wells retires
Former Chicago Cubs pitcher Randy Wells has retired after going winless in five starts this season for the Texas Rangers' Triple-A team.
The Rangers said Tuesday that Wells' retirement was effectively immediately.
In 98 career games in the majors from 2008-12, all but one with the Cubs, Wells was 28-32 with a 4.08 ERA. He was 1-2 in 12 games last season for Chicago, but...
Kinsler helps Rangers beat A's
PHOENIX (AP) -- Randy Wells hopes that maybe, just maybe, this will be the year that everything falls into place.
Injury and inconsistency have plagued the 30-year-old right-hander during his career, which up until 2013 primarily had been with the Chicago Cubs.
Now with the Texas Rangers, he is making a bid for the No. 5 spot in their rotation.
On Thursday, he had the team'...

Rangers make several minor moves
The Texas Rangers made several transactions Thursday morning in Nashville but not of them involved the names Hamilton, Greinke, Young or Upton.
Texas made a pick in the Rule 5 draft, selecting right-handed sidearmer Coty Woods from Colorado in the major-league phase of the draft. The Rangers also picked up infielder Marquez Smith from Cincinnati in the Triple-A phase of the Rule...
RotoWire MLB Mound Musings
With just two weeks remaining in the fantasy season, unearthing a hidden gem in the pile of rocks known as your waiver wire is more of an exercise in futility than anything else. Sure, there might be some random youngster like Jake Odorizzi available, but for the most part, the pickin's are pretty slim. Streaming pitchers might be a popular strategy at this time, but there'...
Matt Garza leaves game with forearm injury
Matt Garza left tonight's game after 3 innings with a forearm injury. It's probably not serious, but here are some other players who have had not so serious forearm injuries: Kerry Wood, Randy Wells and Angel Guzman.

Cubs option RHP Wells, recall RHP Dolis
The Cubs recalled right-handed pitcher Rafael Dolis from Triple-A Iowa and designated struggling right-handed starter Randy Wells for assignment. Dolis was available for Wednesday's game against the New York Mets at Wrigley Field. Dolis went 2-4 with four saves and a 5.68 ERA (16 earned runs in 25 1/3 innings) in 23 relief appearances for the Cubs during his first big league...

Randy Wells Designated for Assignment
Following his second straight outing with four walks in less than four innings, Randy Wells was designated for assignment by the Cubs today (first reported by Bruce Miles on Twitter, as best as I can tell).
It's been a rough season and a half for Wells. After a solid, 3 fWAR rookie campaign he posted a mixed bag of a sophomore campaign. His ERA was riding high for most of the...
Designated for assignment: Humberto Quintero and Randy Wells
– The Kansas City Royals designated catcher Humberto Quintero for assignment the team announced. Quintero, who was acquired from the Astros back in March, hit only .232/.257/.341 with 1 HR, 19 RBI's and a 63 OPS+ in 144 plate appearances with the Royals in 2012.
– According to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com, the Chicago Cubs designated right handed pitcher Randy Wells for assignment...
Cubs get big hit from Rizzo, defeat Mets 5-3
Cubs starter Randy Wells didn’t last long in this one, but four Chicago relievers held the Mets scoreless for the last six innings of this one. Wells only went three innings, but Gee couldn’t get through more than five, and Anthony Rizzo’s fourth inning RBI double turned out to be the difference in the 5-3 Cubs win.
Gee got through the first two innings without much issue...

“Weird Wrigley” says TC: Cubs 6, Mets 1
Well, so much for my prediction of not many home runs tonight because of the Wrigley winds. The Cubs’ Joe Mather hit a 2-spot in the 4th and Ike Davis hit a solo home run in the 9th. Sadly, that would be the only run the Mets would score tonight, in what Terry Collins would describe as a “weird Wrigley night” in the post-game presser.
I’m not sure if the wind was playing...

It was depressing enough finding out that Randy Wells is gonna hang around and start. It's depressing enough thinking that Ryan Dempster may never perform as a Cub again, and Wells could be his fill-in for the duration of this season.Hell, it's depressing enough knowing I gotta stay up late to watch the Cubs lose to Arizona and get depressed all over...
Wells' stay in rotation might be brief
Cubs pitcher Randy Wells has struggled throughout his appearances with the big-league club. His most recent start may wrap up his time in the starting rotation. The Sports Xchange gives a detailed look at the Cubs.
White Sox 7, Cubs 0
Gavin Floyd pitched four-hit ball into the seventh, Gordon Beckham homered, and the struggling Chicago White Sox beat the Cubs 7-0 Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.
Floyd (5-7) put aside his recent problems. Beckham matched a career-high by driving in four runs, and the White Sox got an easy win after dropping six of seven.
They finally showed some pop after managing just...
Series Preview: Chicago Cubs (22-44) at Chicago White Sox (35-31)
I think the White Sox have already claimed the Dead Pelican Cup, even if their entire team comes down with the plague and the Cubs eke out a sweep this week. The White Sox are a legit contender in the AL Central, in fact they're the only team with a positive run differential in the whole group. Their +36 is third best in the AL, trailing only the Yankees and Rangers. They'...
Cubs place Soto on 15-day disbaled list
The Chicago Cubs placed Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 17, and recalled right-handed pitcher Randy Wells from Triple-A Iowa. Soto had arthroscopic surgery performed by Dr. Stephen Gryzlo on his left knee Friday after experiencing inflammation two days ago. He is batting .161 (15-for-93) with three home runs and six RBI in 28 games this season. Wells...
Plus Five MPH is Back
Like a bad penny, the Cubs can't seem to catch a break. Here is the list of the broken catchers:
Steve Clevenger -Oblique rib cage strain. He is scheduled to return to the batting cage this weekend and might be ready to come off the DL by next weekend in Pittsburgh.
Geo Soto - Went on the DL with a knee meniscus tear and had it repaired/ trimmed on Friday. Out at least 3 weeks...
Wind Clocked at 20; I-Cubs Clock a Trio
Waiting for the game to begin tonight I noticed that the pitchers would be throwing into a stiff breeze. A couple young scouts, I thought, sat down a couple rows in front of me to chart the game, one of them armed with a jugs gun. I sauntered down to ask them how the scoreboard speedometer compared to their readings since the last time I checked it was thought to generally register...
The Children Are The Future-Cubs Minor League Update Sponsored by Acapulco Taco Pie
Iowa Another day another Anthony Rizzo HR. He decided to pair his 13th shot of the year with a triple and kept his average at .359. Brett Jackson on the other hand is really scuffling right now as he slipped down to .226 after another 0-4 day. Randy Wells got shelled and has a 7 + [...]
Zephyrs' Montz Drills Wells Deep
There was a big, bad moon rising tonight over Principal Park about the time New Orleans' Luke Montz boomed a Randy Wells s(t)inker through the teeth of the brisk zephyr blowing in off the Des Moines River to break a 1-1 tie and launch the visitors to a 7-3 series-evening win.
Wells actually lowered his Iowa ERA to 8.38 while allowing three runs in his rather ordinary five inning...
Cubs' Dempster, Wood activated from DL
The Chicago Cubs activated right-handed pitchers Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood from the 15-day disabled list Thursday, while sending pitchers Scott Maine and Randy Wells to Triple-A Iowa. Dempster, who turned 35 Thursday, will start against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park. He is 0-1 with a 1.33 ERA in three starts this season. He missed time with a strained right...
