I’ve begun to realize that although the Sabres are a successful organization when it comes to grooming prospects, they have difficulty producing leaders. Sure, the Sabres have homegrown players that have served as assistants or even “rotating” captains, but no one has been able to step-up and take the role as the ultimate leader.

The Buffalo Sabres signed free agent center Rob Niedermayer to a one-year deal on Wednesday. Niedermayer has played in 16 seasons in the NHL, and won a Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007. Last year he had 22 points in 71 games with the New Jersey Devils. Niedermayer became Buffalo's second free agent signing since July 1.
