So much for that Atkins record
At the end of the regular season, Geno Atkins had 8.0 sacks and was tied with Dan Wilkinson for the team’s single-season sack record by an interior lineman. On Wednesday, he lost it.
The team’s individual sack totals have been changed due to a play review by Elias Sports Bureau. Atkins and Robert Geathers each lost half a sack from the fourth quarter of the Week 14 game against...

Bengals' D-Line: Good
Do the Cincinnati Bengals have the best defensive line in the NFL?
Well, that might be laying it on a bit thick, but there's no question they have one of the best. And the deepest.
For anyone that follows Ohio State, the 2011 Bengals are mimicking what the Buckeyes have done for years on their defensive front: They are rotating players in-and-out of the game in order to...

Three players were suspended after Saturday's melee between Georgia and Vanderbilt, but Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and Vanderbilt coach James Franklin, who got into a verbal squabble after the game, escaped without reprimand.
The SEC issued a statement Wednesday handing down first-half suspensions to Vanderbilt center Logan Stewart, Georgia defensive lineman...

Bengals-Broncos pregame notes and inactives
Good afternoon from Sports Authority Field at Mile High where the 1-0 Bengals face the 0-1 Broncos. The Bengals will try to go 2-0 for the 12th time in team history and for the third time under Lewis. The last time it happened was 2006 when they started 3-0 but ended with an 8-8 record. However it would mark the first time in team history they would start 2-0 with the first two...

Dalton full go during practice
After being limited on Wednesday and not doing any throwing, Andy Dalton went through the routines of a normal practice during the first 30 minutes on Thursday.
Dalton started off with some swing passes to the running backs before going through some longer passes with the receivers. He appeared to not have any problems throwing which means everything appears on track for him to start...

Defense puts clamps on comeback
There were still four minutes and 28 seconds left in the game when rookie wide receiver A.J. Green scored on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Bruce Gradkowski to give the Bengals a 20-17 lead in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s season opener against Cleveland.
The defense made that score stand up by shutting the door on the Browns as it had done for most of the second half in the Bengals...

Updates: Bengals at Browns
The Bengals won the toss and deferred, so the Browns will start with the ball.
1st quarter
Browns: Colt McCoy’s first completion of the year is to himself after the tip by Robert Geathers for a five-yard loss. Browns first drive goes nowhere and the Bengals get a 3-and-out to start the season. A bad punt gives the Bengals the ball at the Browns 41.

Lay it On The Line
It’s an axiom so simple that even a numbskull like me gets it: “The game is won in the trenches.” I believe that whole-heartedly. To be anything more than mediocre, a team has to have great offensive and defensive lines. Without them, skill players don’t often have the time to use those skills to their fullest. And success will be sporadic.
Joe Reedy’...

Let’s Play G.M. (Part 2)
A couple of weeks ago I posted the first installment of this series looking at options head coach. Well, Marvin is back at the helm for the next [undisclosed period of time], as we learned at the we-are-going-to-be-better-even-though-we-see-no-need-to-change-a-single-thing press conference last week. (That pc made yet another case for the need for a G.M. You, me, even a poo-flinging...

Locker room wrap up
A near comeback win turned into just another defeat for the Bengals Monday night as they lost 27-21 to Pittsburgh at Paul Brown Stadium. It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Bengals, who drop to 2-6 and are now in sole possession of last place in the AFC North, one game behind Cleveland (3-5). The Steelers and Baltimore are tied for first place at 6-2.

Final: Steelers 27, Bengals 21
Steelers tight end Heath Miller (83) is tackled by Bengals defensive end Robert Geathers (91). Associated Press/Ed Reinke.
In the end, too many early mistakes proved too much for the Bengals to overcome.
Down by 20 early in the fourth quarter, the Bengals rallied in the fourth quarter but fell short as the Steelers won 27-21 on Monday night at Paul Brown Stadium.

Head drama: Hard hits generate blowback throughout NFL
Eddie Kennison stood on the sideline four years ago, watching and waiting about 15 minutes while Trent Green lay on the Arrowhead Stadium turf. Green was the Chiefs’ quarterback in 2006, and Kennison was running a sideline route when Green scrambled to his right and slid before Cincinnati defensive end Robert Geathers plowed into Green, snapping the quarterback’s head to the ground.

No Rush
One of the more alarming trends in this Bengals season is the absence of a pass rush. According to a stat passed along by Joe Reedy, the Bengals are buck-naked last in sacks with three and have one sack for every 46.67 opponent pass attempts. Quite frankly, that’s staggering. And embarrassing. Most teams don’t throw 47 times in a game, some might not do it in two. So...

Cincinnati Bengals 20, Carolina Panthers 7
The Bengals hogged the ball on offense as they had possession of it for 36:22 yesterday. Carson Palmer was so-so as he completed 19 of 37 passes for 195 yards with 1 TD pass and 2 INTs. Cedric Benson did the heavy lifting for the Bengals yesterday with 27 carries for 81 yards (3.0 ypc) with a TD run and he also caught 2 passes for 9 yards (4.5 avg) with a TD grab. Jermaine...

Week 3 report card: Bengals-Panthers
For the second straight year the Bengals are 2-1 but it’s a much different feeling. Last year the first three weeks were about fantastic finishes. This year the first three have been about ugly performances. As much as some would like me to flunk one position, you don’t get an F in a win. With that disclaimer, it’s on to the grades:
