MMO Fan Shot: My Tribute To Jose Reyes

I still remember the day Jose Reyes began his Mets career. June 10, 2003. It was my 20th birthday. Reyes was 19, one day shy of turning 20 himself. He was the first major leaguer I ever saw who was born after me. This would become part of his lure to me and my younger brother, as we would always finish off his list of accomplishments with “dude, he’s younger than me!” Truth...

When I am not writing here, I also write for a site called Bus Leagues Baseball. We write about the minor leagues and one of the areas we take the most pride in is our interviews...

Painting the Black: 40-Man Flexibility by R.J. Anderson

Baseball’s postseason rosters will lock into place at the stroke of midnight tonight, when the roster expansion period begins. Only the players on each team’s 25-man roster at that time will be eligible to play in the postseason. That rule was devised to prevent playoff-bound teams from loading up on rentals during the final two weeks of the season (as the rest of the...

We go from guest free to guest packed, as Rays special assistant Rocco Baldelli joins us to talk about his playing career, its untimely end, and transitioning into scouting. David Ortiz, Red Sox Look to Take Advantage of J.A. Happ's Struggles Against Lefties

Houston is not a town inhabited by household baseball names right now. But you've probably heard of J.A. Happ. If so, you'll recall his one start against the Red Sox in 2009, when Rocco Baldelli, Nick Green and Josh Beckett -- as fearsome an offensive trio as the Boston franchise has ever produced -- took him deep. You may also know that that start saw the lefty give up a...

Welcome back Nick Markakis and a rant

On June 3rd of this year Nick Markakis was batting .239/.305/.616, Orioles fans were were really starting to get worried. I was actually beginning to wonder if we were going to have a kind of Rocco Baldelli situation I was genuinely concerned for Nick's health. Then June happened. Right now, June 28th, Nick Markakis is batting .279/.329/.690. Over the last 14 days Nick has...

Video: Ball Disappears In Outfield Fence, Manager Ejects Self Over Fence

This incredible video comes to us via our friends at Watching Durham Bulls Baseball. To set the stage: The Durham Bulls are playing the Norfolk Tides, when a ball hit by the Tides appears to clear the fence for a home run. Or did it? The umpire goes out for a look and finds the ball trapped between the wall and the padding. The Tides manager, apparently not convinced that was the...

CHART: Rays All-Time Games Played Leaders

i was working on my “Chart of the Day” feature over at Business Insider and was trying something new, a word cloud (created using Wordle.net). And I thought it would be fun to see what it would look like over here. So here are all 43 players that have played at least 200 games with the Rays. The size of their names is relative to how many games they have played. Carl...

Baby Rocco

In 2000, Rocco Baldelli was an 18-year old outfielder with the Princeton Rays. It was his first year in pro ball after being drafted in the first round of that June’s amateur draft. Baldelli hit only .216 that season in 60 games, with three home runs and 11 stolen bases. He also apparently posed for at least one picture. This photo comes to us from the Princeton Rays Facebook...

January 31, 2011: < br> Section B90, Row JJ, Seats 5 & 6…

So I halfheartedly sat down at my computer on Saturday afternoon, not particularly hopeful that there would be any tickets left for the 2011 campaign, in light of the fact that the Sox have made some uber-amazing acquisitions, and, at least on paper, are front runners for postseason glory… And, at 2:00pm, I was right. Amazingly, I was granted immediate access to buy tickets...

Putting a Wrap On The Week

As more snow fell here in the East and my prayers for more and more warmer temperatures seem to go unanswered, here are some odds and ends from the week about to conclude.Sorry to hear that Rocco Baldelli (pictured) has now officially called it a career, after just seven years. He looked like a big time player when he first came up with the Rays in 2003. He finished third in the...

The One Where We Discuss Organizational Rankings, Rocco’s Press Conference And Lineup Projections

The Rays minor league system is ranked second by ESPN.com… Probably second even before they dealt Matt Garza, they’re now No. 2 with a bullet and not far behind Kansas City for No. 1. They’re absolutely loaded, with top-end talent near that of K.C., but not the extensive depth of prospects the Royals have. The Rays have focused on arms and impact bats in the middle...

Rocco, We Hardly Knew Ye

photo by Kelly O'Connor, used with permission For a baseball-obsessed area of the planet, New England doesn't produce many professional ballplayers, even fewer Major-Leaguers, and a scant few greats of the game. Warmer climes are usually looked upon as the cradles of the sport: Florida, Georgia, Arizona, California, and, of course, Texas. The comparative rarity of a native...
