RYAN CHURCH NEWS

This Date in Pirates History: February 12

There have been eight former Pittsburgh Pirates players born on this date, among them two very recent ones. Chris Snyder(1981) spent the last two seasons with the Pirates after coming over in the five player deal the Pirates made at the 2010 trading deadline with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Pirates gave up DJ Carrasco, Ryan Church and Bobby Crosby in the deal and along with Snyder...

Ryan Church’s super slide gives game to Astros

The storyline for this loss has to be about the Pirates lack of gonads in our corner outfielders. It was a 1-0 Astros game starting the bottom of the 6th and Maholm was pitching a gem. Bourne hit a grounder that went off the end of Maholm’s glove for a single and that became the first out missed in the inning. Kepplinger then laid down a perfect bunt at Young who...

Ryan Church Is….

The Pittsburgh Pirates employ veteran Ryan Church.  He batted .161 in May, .100 in June, and .226 in, wait….ok, he just struck out so it’s less than .226 in July.  It’s really  frustrating trying to determine why he is still being given opportunites.  So tonight we asked a few people their thoughts on the veteran outfielder.  We asked the question Ryan Church...

Pittsburgh Pirates Game 73 Recap

A note to the Pittsburgh Pirates' accountants: For accounting purposes, the $1.5 M that the Pittsburgh Pirates are giving to Ryan Church for the 2010 season can not be written off as part of the cost to sign Anthony Rendon. Instead, it should be filed under "Recruiting Funds". Note that the "Recruiting Funds" budget does have room for the extra $1.32 M...

Why is Ryan Church Stealing Time From Lastings Milledge?

Over the past seven games, Ryan Church has made the start in right field for the Pittsburgh Pirates five times. Church is currently hitting for a .186/.240/.321 line in 156 at-bats this season, while Lastings Milledge is hitting for a .271/.341/.377 line in 247 at-bats. Neither player is running away with the starting job, but Milledge clearly is doing better, which raises the...

Gameday #87: Back to Church

Pirates (30-56) at Brewers (38-49) 7:10 PM EST–Miller Park, Milwaukee Here is the MLB.com Gameday TV: FSN Pittsburgh, FSN Wisconsin Ryan Church is back in the starting lineup tonight. Lastings Milledge has been light-years ahead of Church in terms of offensive production this season. He also hit a rare homer last night. Church, meanwhile, struck out in a pinch-hit appearance...

Mets Injury Philosophy: “Spit on it wimp, toughen up”

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York told stories on Twitter last night about Mets injuries from the last few years. The stories are quite horrifying. Here are the best quotes from Rubin on Twitter: “Most of [the] Mets medical issues involve disregarding medical advice of team doctors and telling players to be tougher. “Doctors advised J.J. Putz to have bone chips removed from...

Errors for outfielders lately but not Church

The D-backs have five outfielders. Four have made an error in the past week. Ryan Church, outfielder No. 5, hasn't made one in 82 games, a team high.

Notes: Milledge, Church, Russell, Kratz, Heredia, Penn, Moreno

Catching up on the weekend notes... -The platoon is over between Lastings Milledge and Ryan Church.  I posted about a week ago that Church shouldn't be stealing playing time from Milledge.  I'm glad to see that platoon is over. -Also in that link above, Tony Sanchez could return this season, but no more than a week or two, and Jeff Inman has been shut down with elbow discomfort...

Pirates send Carrasco, Church, Crosby to Arizona for Snyder

Chris Snyder The Pittsburgh Pirates have sent reliever D.J. Carrasco, outfielder Ryan Church, and infielder Bobby Crosby to the Arizona Diamondbacks to complete the trade for catcher Chris Snyder.  The deal is basically Carrasco for Snyder, as Church and Crosby have no value, and will basically be traded to off-set salaries. Snyder is owed $1,687,159 for the remainder of the season...

Non-Tender Candidate: Ryan Church

For the second consecutive season, Ryan Church has played well enough to appear in 100 games, but poorly enough to become a non-tender candidate. Last year, the Braves non-tendered Church instead of offering him anything close to his 2009 salary of $2.8MM and he faces similar uncertainty heading into the 2010-11 offseason. The Pirates signed Church for $1.5MM and saw him hit just...

Make Every Day Memorial Day

The Pirates continued to dominate on Memorial Day and specifically ran the domination against the Cubs to new levels.  The Cubs managed to scrap together one run for the fourth time in five games. The run came because Ryan Church is losing his hearing and failed to remove himself from the area where Andrew McCutchen was repeatedly calling for a fly ball in left center field. So...

Lastings Milledge Is The Hatchet Man

Whenever I see Ryan Church taking at bats from Lastings Milledge in the Pittsburgh Pirates lineup, it makes me cringe. I believe it makes you cringe too.  I know it makes Neil Walker cringe.   He isn’t a thing of beauty at the plate or in the field, but when the Pirates outfielder saw runners on base in the first half of 2010, Milledge delivered.

Gameday #71: Free Lastings

Pirates (25-45) at Rangers (42-28) 8:05 PM EST–Rangers Ballpark in Arlington Here is the MLB.com Gameday TV: FSN Pittsburgh, FSN Southwest This is getting ridiculous. Ryan Church is in the starting lineup again, and Lastings Milledge is not. Aside from the fact that Lastings has infinitely more potential for the future than Church, let’s take a quick look at their stat...

Five Things the Pirates Must Do to Salvage Road Trip

The Pittsburgh Pirates  take on the L.A. Dodgers today attempting to salvage a series split.  The series started with the Dodgers flatter than a day old keg of Heineken.  It appears to be concluding with the Dodgers having been healed by the cleansing water of the Pirates.  A sure win last night against a Dodgers pitcher who couldn’t get throw his way past A league baseball...

Gameday #89: Lastings is free!

Astros (36-53) at Pirates (30-58) 7:05 PM EST–PNC Park, Pittsburgh Here is the MLB.com Gameday TV: FSN Pittsburgh, FSN Houston Lastings Milledge has been named the regular right fielder, meaning that the evil reign of Ryan Church has finally come to an end. Pirate fans, Church haters, and the Milledge people rejoice! Seriously, I am thrilled. In other news… This is...

Carrasco, Church, and Crosby to AZ for Snyder

Well, late last night I went to bed knowing the Pirates acquired catcher  Chris Snyder from Arizona, but without knowing who the Bucs were giving up. This morning, we’ve learned that it’s D.J. Carrasco, Bobby Crosby, and Ryan Church. That’s right, folks. The Pirates just traded away Ryan Church. Obviously, I have absolutely no problem giving up Crosby and Church...

D’backs/Pirates Trade: Chris Snyder, Ryan Church, Bobby Crosby, and More

Well, this is certainly strange. The majority of July trades involve rebuilding teams sending veterans to contenders for prospects. But neither the Arizona Diamondbacks nor the Pittsburgh Pirates are anywhere near contention, and yet they made a rather extensive deal today. In the five-player trade, Pittsburgh sent reliever D.J. Carrasco, outfielder Ryan Church, and infielder Bobby...

Church expresses desire to return in 2011

Gameday #62: Seriously, JR?

Pirates (23-38) at Tigers (31-29) 7:05 PM EST–Comerica Park, Detroit Here is the MLB.com Gameday TV: FSN Pittsburgh, FSN Detroit Unreal. Last night, John Russell stuck Ryan Church–a guy who can’t hit and is useful ONLY on defense–in the DH spot the Bucs have to fill for these games at the AL parks. That was one of at least three really dumb lineup decisions...

Pirates, Athletics Turn Back The Clock Survival Gear

The Pirates have lost fifteen consecutive road games after last night’s crushing 14-4 loss.  The game was 5-4 with the A’s coming to bat in the seventh inning.  Seven runs later, the A’s were walking on water and the Pirates continue their infamous pursuit of the Alleghenys losing streak.  The Athletics pounded out seventeen hits and Ben Sheets struck out nine...
