KHL All Star Game
The KHL All Star Game will be played this Saturday in Riga, Latvia. It is always interesting to see which players make the AHL All Star rosters as almost all of them have been seen in North America in the past.
The game is West Conference against East Conference. Each team has a big name player as their captain. In the past it was Team Jaromir Jagr representing the East and Team...

Matt Karash: On the horse again tonight
Since I lost found time to blog, the Canes got back to their losing ways on Saturday and more significantly, they shed a big salary that just was not working in Tomas Kaberle.
On the Kaberle thing...Here is a painful blast from the past for you - Sandis Ozolinsh. High-end puck-moving defensemen have been few and far between for the Canes. Most would put Joni Pitkanen in this...

Fight Video: Another line brawl for KHL goons Vityaz Chekhov
Vityaz Chekhov is our favorite KHL team because it's a gong-show goon squad that's three Hanson Brothers away from being "Slap Shot: Mission to Moscow." It used to be the home of Chris Simon; now it has players like Kip Brennan, Jon "Nasty" Mirasty and the star our next clip, Jeremy Yablonski.
In a game between Dinamo Riga and Vityaz Chekhov on Sunday...

Saturday Avalanche reflections, etc.
The Denver Post, Andy Cross
The word I’m hearing is the Avalanche could still be thinking about another free-agent signing, but chances are very much there that yesterday was it for the team.
I believe the Avs still feel a need for a fourth-line center, with the loss of Phillipe Dupuis (he’s still out there and can be signed, but doesn’t seem likely). Yeah, the...

The Valeri Kamensky Language School
"Al Bundy," Kamensky said with a thick Russian accent. "I learned a lot from him. That was a good show to learn English."--Denver Post, November 20, 1996This was one of the more curious statistics surrounding the initial years of the Colorado Avalanche: at least two players, Valeri Kamensky and Sandis Ozolinsh, got their primary initial English instruction from...

Isles Goon Runs Business More Successful Than His Own Team
Zenon Konopka, who leads the NHL in penalty minutes this year, is a grapeseed oil magnate. He makes and sells wine, too. Then, presumably, Sandis Ozolinsh drinks it. [AmEx Open Forum]More »

Pass of Fail: KHL's Longest Shot All-Star Game skills competition
For the sheer surrealism of it, last weekend's KHL All-Star
Game and skills competition could be our favorite hockey thing of 2011.
Team Jagr defeating Team Yashin in a defensive battle,
18-16. The questionable (and controversial) "world
record" in the hardest shot competition. And, of course, Chris Simon winning the shot accuracy
competition and giving Larry
Brooks...

Former New York Rangers goalie Steve Valiquette is now

It Starts Tonight
After a mediocre pre-season, the Colorado Avalanche will look to start the regular season off right against a tough opponent. The defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawksd to be exact. In less than two hours, the Avs will host the regular season debut for both teams.
The Avs will also be hosting some Stanley Cup Champions of their own.

Ten years ago, the opening-night payroll
Going through some old files today, I found my list of the Hurricanes' opening-night salaries from 2000-01, the first year I covered the team. Thought it might be worth posting just for kicks.
Among the highlights: Ron Francis, Rod Brind'Amour and Sandis Ozolinsh accounted for 42 percent of the payroll all by their lonesome; Jeff Daniels and Craig Adams were the team'...

All but two players from ‘95-96 Avs Cup team will be in Denver Oct. 6-7
I’ve learned the following: all but two players will be in Denver Oct. 6 and 7 for the Avalanche’s reunion of the 1995-96 Stanley Cup team – Denver’s first major pro championship team.
Those two players are Sandis Ozolinsh and Chris Simon. They desperately want to be on hand, but both are still playing in Russia’s KHL and their teams wouldn’t let...

Ah, the NHL Trade Deadline, the time of year Ranger fans hold their breath, hoping for a big upgrade that will send them over the edge. Please, Mr. Sather, not this year. Save the players. Save the draft pics. History is not on your sideIn 2005-06, the Rangers got Sandis Ozolinsh for Ville Nieminen. Technically, Nieminen was moved for a draft pick, and that pick was then traded to...

Avalanche 3 ? Sharks 1
Well obviously this was a disappointing loss with some VERY frustrating occurrences throughout the game. It will take a lot of will power to focus on the positive throughout this summary; I'll save my frustrations for another posting.

So John Tortorella thinks Sean Avery should "stay home" because of a bad joke he made about an ex-girlfriend (comments he made on TSN), but apparently being arrested for a hit and run made while driving under the influence is perfectly acceptable. Why do the Rangers need another 3rd/4th line winger?
