Chatting with Islanders Prospect Scott Mayfield

(Via the New York Islanders Flickr page.) By Christian Arnold (@CA_NYHockey) On Thursday night, following the prospect scrimmage and skill competition, I had the chance to catch up with defensive prospect Scott Mayfield. The 20-year-old played two seasons of college hockey with the Denver University Pioneers before making the jump to pro hockey in the spring. Mayfield played six...

Top 10 Prospects in the Islanders System: The Honorable Mentions

With prospect camp going on this week out at The Nassau Coliseum, I thought it would be a good idea to run a series on the top ten prospects in the Islanders' system. I am going to start with some honorable mentions in this article, then go from ten to one, revealing one player a week until I reveal number one. This will lead up to the week training camp opens in September....

To sign or not to sign

Brenden Kichton (Spokane Chiefs) It is that time of the year as New York Ranger and New York Islander prospects in the playoffs but for some the bigger question is do I sign or do I say no? For the teams they, too have to decide whether or not to offer contracts to their prospects especially for those selected in the 2011 NHL draft. One prospect has reportedly already made...

And the clock ran out

Peter Ceresnak (OHL Images) St. Patrick's Day was not very lucky for the one New York Ranger and one New York Islander prospect who saw their season come to an unhappy ending. Not every prospect has a happy ending to their season or their dream of an NHL career. Peter Ceresnak (NYR 11 6th) and his Peterborough Petes came up 1 win, 1 point short of making the OHL Eastern Conference...

The Defense to the rescue

Griffin Reinhart (Edmonton Oil Kings) Friday night was about players stepping up for their teams as the prospects of the New York Ranger and New York Islanders make pushes to help their teams with their playoff hopes. No position had a bigger impact than the defense corps and it should not be a surprise that more defensemen are also captains on their team. First Star Griffin...

Never a dull moment

Peter Ceresnak (OHL Images) Boy if you want to talk about a really interesting last 7 days for the New York Ranger and New York Islander prospects then what will they do during this upcoming week for an encore? Depending on whether you are playing in the NCAA or the Canadian juniors; this week is "sudden death" or "new life" week for the prospects and their teams...

Rare shutout loss leaves Gophers frustrated

MINNEAPOLIS The University of Minnesota men's hockey team entered its weekend series against Denver with the best power play unit in the WCHA. If you didn't know that as you watched Friday's game, however, you might have thought the Gophers' power play unit was among the worst in the conference. Minnesota was 0-for-5 on the power play Friday and had just two total...

(Video) UND takes DU to the Wood Shed 6-1

Great effort by the guys in Green and White. I will let the video do the talking.  Not a good weekend by the guys wearing the stripes, I thought that Scott Bokal and Brian Thul were absolutely brutal. After further review, it was more Scott Bokal that was the "weak link" in that officiating crew. I made a comment on the UND game chat that after UND went up 3...

Big game efforts

This is a first for this blog as the first and second stars of the night came from the same game as New York Islander and New York Ranger prospects went against each other in one of more exciting games to watch this season. Man I wish I found this job when I was younger as Friday was a blast with some big games on the schedule so to quote Warner Wolf "Lets go to the videotape...

Missed their wakeup call

Anders Lee (Notre Dame) It was the night before the NHL season started and nobody was stirring not even a New York Ranger's prospect. And that described the efforts of the Ranger prospects Friday night as few if any played well enough to write home about. The New York Islander prospects had better efforts even if not all of them walked away with wins. Unlike the NHL, there...

Strange but true (Russian) hockey stories

(New York Islanders) The New York Islander and New York Ranger prospect report for Friday night is more about head scratching and wondering what people in Russia are smoking. Got to start with what was a jaw dropper when I got the word of Griffin Reinhart's 4 game suspension by the IIHF. Now I am all for players being held accountable for their actions but in this case this...

Examples of WCHA Officiating; inconsistency.

You make the call... Here is what I saw. First, you have a shoulder to shoulder hit that's called a elbow, that would lead to a power play goal by the Pioneers. Then, you get a legit call on the Scott Mayfield, that's a five minute major in my book. In my opinion, WCHA ref Don Adam made the right call on that play. Adam's side kick, Tim Walsh probably blew it as well...

Saturday stepping up

Mitchell Theoret (OHL Images)  It wasn't as wild as Friday night but Saturday night was entertaining as New York Ranger and New York Islanders players were stepping up for missing teammates or in the case of one helping his team break a slump. It was also Teddy Bear night in several places as hockey and their fans stepped up to help children in their local areas. Tonight...

The Rose Quarter Mafia

(Portland Winterhawks) Day two of the WHL's war on the Portland Winterhawks took on a harsher tone with the WHL after saying they would not issue any further public comments on the matter went out and issued another statement. An Islander Friday

Robbie Russo (Matt Cashore/Notre Dame) Sorry New York Ranger fans but Friday night belonged to the New York Islander prospects; mainly their defensemen prospects. School days Islander style

Anders Lee (CCHA) The New York Islanders have some very promising talent of their own in the college ranks. The key here has to be the Islanders letting these prospects develop to their fullest ability. Anders Lee (2009 6th) is at a crossroads after a not so solid sophomore season at Notre Dame last year. Lee started off like a manic with 12 goals in his first 11 games but...
