SETH SMITH NEWS

Random Thoughts – 19 July vs Mets

Ghost has the recap, but I wanted to add a couple of thoughts in addition to his usual excellent work. Tonight was the best I’ve seen the Padres execute in hitters counts all season.  A hitters count is 2-0 or 3-1.  Tonight’s results: Seth Smith (B1) 2-0 count:  3-unassisted (and he didn’t move from the batters box.  Oh well) Yasmani Grandal (B2) 3-1 count:  HR to RC...

View From The Left Coast

It’s no surprise to anyone reading this that the Padres offense is historically bad. And while I continue to await a regression to the mean, the further into the season we go the more I’m concerned that this simply is the mean. These offensive woes are not being noticed only in our neck of the woods it turns out. Yesterday, Benjamin Hoffman of the New York Times contacted me...

Your All-Star Vote Counts!

Except when it doesn’t. So, Huston Street and Tyson Ross are your San Diego Padres 2014 All-Stars, although Ross will not play having started on Sunday.  Street was named to replace Ross on the active All-Star roster. The Padres wanted us to write-in Seth Smith on our All-Star ballots this year. Because his name wasn’t on the ballot and everyone else sucked. Last week, I explored...

While You Were Drinking 2014 Game 93 (SD at LAD)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after spending an evening in the pub.  So here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. The Padres (41-52) defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers (52-43) 6-3 last night at Dodger Stadium.  Jesse Hahn (5-2, 2.21) and his curveball confused and confounded the Dodgers batters.  Over six innings, Hahn gave up just...

Who’s Your All-Star? Ross Is. Wait, no. Yes.

Maybe. No he’s not. Yeah, he is. I’m so confused! It’s been quite the exciting week for Tyson Ross.  Last Wednesday, he pitched the first complete game shutout of his career in a win over the Cincinnati Reds.  Thursday, he joined Twitter. And Sunday, he was named to his first National League All-Star team as the Padres’ lone representative. Wait–What?  Tyson Ross?  What...

Padres News: Seth Smith signs an extension

The San Diego Padres have signed outfielder Seth Smith to a two-year extension, tweets Corey Brock of MLB.com. The deal is worth $13 million. It is an odd circumstance that the Padres are working with, considering they don't have a new general manager in place after the recent firing of Josh Byrnes, but the Friars were able to lock up their slugging outfielder for the next two...

What does Seth Smith extension say about Padres’ future?

Being currently without a general manager isn’t stopping the San Diego Padres from doing some business. It’s just a bit curious that transactions like signing players to new contracts are happening without the executive that would normally attend to such matters in place. The Padres signed outfielder Seth Smith to a two-year contract extension on Wednesday, keeping the 31-year...

The (sort of) Puzzling Seth Smith Extension

The year is 2026. After a 10 year run of dominance in the National League West by the San Diego Padres, Jonah Keri has completed his fifth bestseller — Friar Fever: How Farhan Zaidi Took the Forgettable San Diego Padres from Cellar-Dwellers to the Top of the Baseball World. Consider this passage, from the first chapter: … Josh Byrnes was ousted after two-and-a-half years of mediocrity...

Padres sign Seth Smith to two-year extension

Despite his name coming up in trade conversations the last few weeks, San Diego Padres signed a two-year extension with the team on Wednesday. The Padres fired general manager Josh Byrnes last week, but that didn’t stop them from signing Smith. Corey Brock of MLB.com first reported the news. The Seth Smith two-year contract extension […]

Mr. Smith Gets Extended

Seth Smith will be a Padre through the 2016 season, with a club option for 2017.  Mixed reactions to this extension are to be expected. On the one hand, he has been an average to above average player based on his 108 wRC+ over the entirety of his career. As Dave Cameron points out, the contract isn’t onerous and actually retains his services at a discount based on his performance...

Padres give Seth Smith two-year extension

Smith’s availability had some contenders contacting the Padres but the team instead have given him a two-year deal worth $13 million. Additionally there is a $7 million club option for 2017 which will guarantee Smith at-least a $250...

Padres, Smith Agree to 2-year/$13MM Extension

For a team that’s poised and ready to sell off its roster (being 10-games under .500 at the time of this writing and just two weeks away from the All-Star break), a 2-year extension worth $13 million doesn’t really seem like the type of thing the Padres would be prepared to offer. Nonetheless, the Padres have reportedly agreed to a 2-year extension with outfielder Seth Smith...

Padres signed OF Seth Smith to a two-year, $13 million contract extension.

The deal also includes a club option for 2017. The Padres raised some eyebrows over the offseason when they traded Luke Gregerson for Smith, but the outfielder has been the team's best hitter with a .281/.384/.506 batting line and nine homers over 72 games. They'd probably be better of trading him than extending him, but at least the extension didn't cost them too much.

While You Were Drinking 2014 Game 84 (CIN vs SD)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after spending an evening in the pub.  So here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. The Padres (37-47) pummeled the Cincinnati Reds (43-40) by a score of 8-2 last night.  Carlos Quentin made up for a baserunning gaffe in the first inning by crushing his fourth homer in the seventh inning. Baseball's stingiest pitcher takes the mound for the Reds

San Diego's Jekyll and Hyde offense has bewildered only the Cincinnati Reds during this series as the Padres are on the verge of matching their longest winning streak of the season. DraftKings – A Leake of Their Own

Every major leaguer knows that there is absolutely no crying in baseball. Then there’s Hall of Fame speeches. I’m preparing mine right now for the DFS Hall of Shame for last week, and believe me, there’s plenty of wet spots on the notecards. After an abysmal call on Kazmir as my top choice last week I’ve had to take my lumps, swallow my pride and get back out there. I...

The Allure of Expectation

If you listened to the Josh Byrnes and Mike Dee interviews on yesterday’s Darren Smith show (and if you didn’t you probably should), the sticking point boiled down to expectations. So let’s talk about expectations. Josh claimed he never oversold this team’s ability to ownership. To paraphrase, based on the projections he saw (the same ones we have access to, by the way) he...
