Dodgers Recall Daniel Coulombe, Who Is A Living Human Being

Buried at the bottom of a J.P.Hoornstra piece on Joc Pederson the other day was this note: Mattingly said that he and the front office have discussed adding one more player already in the organization to the active roster over the final two weeks. Since the Dodgers already had 36 active players, and Stephen Fife, Jarret Martin and Matt Magill were all unlikely for various reasons...

Dodgers Injury Update: Stephen Fife has Tommy John surgery

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost a 3-2 decision to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night to drop to 69-53 on the season. Hold a five-game lead over the San Francisco Giants in the National League West, the Dodgers have been lead by a strong pitching staff that is fifth in the Major Leagues in ERA. The staff has been impressive, particularly considering the fact that four pitchers are...

Dodgers’ Rotation Excellence Masks Depth Concerns

The Dodger starting rotation, if you haven’t noticed, has been excellent. By one measure, you could even argue that it has been the most productive rotation in baseball. It helps when you have a pitcher who is on track to be one of the all-time elites, of course, but there’s also two guys who would be an ace on other teams, and two veterans who have been surprisingly productive...

Dodgers @ Nationals May 5, 2014: And Now Pedro Baez, I Guess

And today’s transaction is… *spins wheel*… Pedro Baez! Sure, why not. The Dodgers have literally been making a move almost every day for the last week, thanks to the Minnesota doubleheader and Hyun-jin Ryu‘s disabled list stint. This time around, it’s returning Sunday starter Stephen Fife to Triple-A in order to select righty reliever Pedro Baez from Double-A, for what...

Marlins 5, Dodgers 4: Good Game, Worst Ending

It wouldn’t be a 2014 Dodger game without some stress. This game was close as well, but the ending overshadows everything else. With a runner on third and two outs in a tie game in the ninth, Jeff Baker sent a fly ball to left over Yasiel Puig‘s head. With the game on the line, Puig jumped for the ball. He missed the catch by inches and the Marlins won. More importantly, Puig...

Dodgers @ Marlins May 4, 2014: Reminder, Jose Fernandez Is Amazing

It’s Fife-tastic! Stephen Fife, recalled today to start against Miami with Jose Dominguez going back to Triple-A, is just the best kind of guy to have in your organization. You never, ever want to start a season with him in your rotation, and you don’t ever want to have to rely on him for 30 starts, but you know that a few times a year you’re going to need to dip into the minors...

Dodger Rotation Suddenly An Open Question

Last year, you may remember, the Dodgers used nine different starting pitchers in their first 23 games. Clayton Kershaw, Hyun-jin Ryu, Zack Greinke, and Josh Beckett were the original foursome, joined by Chad Billingsley the second time through. From there, it was something like a comedy of errors. Carlos Quentin broke Greinke, so Chris Capuano become starter No. 6, but immediately...

Your First Chance To See Zach Lee At Dodger Stadium

80 stirrups! I like Stephen Fife just fine. I do. Really! He’s turned himself into quite a useful depth starter to have around, the kind of guy you feel fine with throwing six or eight times a year, the kind of guy you never want to rely on, but know you’ll need. But… we know what he can do. We know what he is. And so when I heard that he’d be unable to start tonight due...

Dodgers Digest Mailbag: Outfield Shuffle, SP Prospects, Playoffs

A mailbag? Yes, a mailbag. In all our collective wisdom here at Dodgers Digest, I don’t believe any of us have ever tried a mailbag that simply answers your questions, probably because you’re all so frightening and intimidating. Fortunately, with all our powers combined, we were able to summon the courage to answer all your questions (sort of). We’ll try to make this a regular...

Matt Magill should be Dodgers’ No. 5 starter in April

I know I’m going to catch a lot of flak for this, but Matt Magill should be the Dodgers’ No. 5 starter to begin the season.I’ll wait for you to stop laughing… still waiting. OK. Hear me out. The Dodgers have yet to sign another starting pitcher this winter. General Manager Ned Colletti has said a few times he’s looking at starters since Masahiro Tanaka signed with the Yankees...

Dodgers don't really need another starting pitcher with in-house options

All too predictably, one of the other teams overpaid for Masahiro Tanaka, and he took the money. The Dodgers did the right thing here, saying we’ll pay "X" number of dollars, but no more (where x is probably around six years, $120 million + $20 million release fee).Given his fastball velocity (good, but not elite) and past workload, the Dodgers harbored substantial questions...
