Troy Percival...Seriously?
The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are close to signing the former Angels closer to a multi-year deal and rumor has it that he could take over 9th inning duties for his new squad. I know he pitched last year and pitched well, but for the last half decade or so he's been the guy that gets called out at auction fantasy drafts only to have someone say "isn't he hurt?" and then get thrown back...

Tale Of The Tape: Milli Vanilli Vs. Barry Bonds
So if you've been following the site for a while you realize we're not exactly the biggest fans of Barry Bonds and his quest for a tainted record. So while thinking of other completely fraudulent achievements over the years it occurred to me, this whole Barry and steroids thing is a lot like the Milli Vanilli scandal of the early 90s. So I took some time to examine which was a more...

Respekanize Troy Percival
You know it feels like I’m the only person in Devil Ray Town who has any faith in Troy Percival and it makes absolutely no sense to me. Since Percy got here, the Devil Rays have lost just one game when he entered in a save situation. Out of like 40 games. Them’s pretty good odds.
But he still makes folks like Jason Collette, The Mayor Of Devil Ray Town Cork Gaines, and...

Instant Replay Utilized in Baseball! Um, Really?
Boy am I glad they instituted instant replay in Major League Baseball. Oh, you mean you didn't know they had instituted it?
It has been with little fanfare, for sure. In fact, it took a week and 81 actual games for a home run to even be called into question. MLB executive

Tampa Bay Rays (18 days until Opening Day)Yesterday: Tampa Bay Rays 7, Spankees 6. Andy Sonnanstine got his first start of the spring and looked sharp going 3 scoreless and giving up only 1 hit. He did not walk a batter. Troy Percival pitched another perfect inning in the 5th. Both veteran non-roster...

Troy Percival was probably the best reliever in Los Angeles/California Angels’ history
The Angels knew they really had something with righty reliever Troy Percival during his rookie year. He pitched in 62 games (0 starts) for the California Angels in 1995 and he was 3-2 with 3 saves, a 1.95 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP. He only gave up 37 hits in 74 innings in 1995 and he had 94 whiffs. The Angels thought enough of him to make him the closer in 1996 and the rest is history...

Troy Percival’s Pottymouth Tears Rays Fans Apart
In all of the 12 months most Rays fans have followed the team, they’ve had very little adversity. Losing a World Series was tough, but it really brought them together as a series of suburbs masquerading as a city. So the current controversy over Troy Percival is uncharted waters for Tampa Bay.
Bad manners, bad [...]

What Percival Taught Friedman
The architect of one of the biggest defensive turnarounds in modern baseball history, Andrew Friedman was given another tough task this offseason: build an entire major league bullpen with limited financial flexibility. In an offseason where relievers banked over $200 million, the Rays signed three relief pitchers (Kyle Farnsworth, Joel Peralta, J.P. Howell) to major league deals...

Los Angeles Angels Wont Catch Texas Unless Their Bullpen Gets Right.
Angel fans have been spoiled. From 1996 to 2008 it was just about automatic, the game was over in the 9th inning. Between Troy Percival and Francisco Rodriguez, Angel fans saw the two relievers combine for an amazing 524 saves. From 2000-2009 the Angels bullpen lead the American League in ERA (3.71) and was second in the Majors. However that is all ancient history as the 2010 Angels...

Where do bullpens come from?
I have a theory, which is hardly a unique theory. It states: Minor league relievers are usually irrelevant to major league success. Most key major league relievers are former starters. I'm not sure the extent to which this is true. Obviously there are exceptions, like Troy Percival and Bryan Harv...
