Who's Your Bowling Partner?
By David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer
Baseball and Bowling are about as far apart in sports as trucks were from Trans Ams. Aside from both being enhanced by a good beer, neither sport has much overlap. In fact, in many ways, they are diametrically opposed. For one thing, getting a strike in baseball isn't a good thing, whereas in bowling, that's the best thing. For...

Mariners have shown they are taking the long route
Great to be back in Seattle and looking forward to spring training after a nice couple of weeks off in South Africa and France. As usual, the Mariners timed all of their big moves and non-moves for the moment I left, giving colleague Larry Stone plenty to do. I'll schedule next year's vacation earlier, so that the team doesn't leave you hanging in suspense all winter...

Angels so close, just don’t know how to close the deal.
The entire time I was watching todays Angels-Rays game, I just had a bad feeling. Angels led 3-0, and 4-2 at certain points, but I just had a sneaking suspicion that things weren’t going to end up well. Damn feelings, I hate it when I am right. Angels lost 5-4 in 10 innings, and now trail the Texas Rangers by 4 games.
I wanted to write this as soon as the Jays scored the winning...

Troy Percival was probably the best reliever in Los Angeles/California Angels’ history
The Angels knew they really had something with righty reliever Troy Percival during his rookie year. He pitched in 62 games (0 starts) for the California Angels in 1995 and he was 3-2 with 3 saves, a 1.95 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP. He only gave up 37 hits in 74 innings in 1995 and he had 94 whiffs. The Angels thought enough of him to make him the closer in 1996 and the rest is history...

Player Q&A: K-Rod talks anger, fatherhood & winning
Posted in MetsBlog
Last week, MetsBlog’s Rich Coutinho talked with Francisco Rodriguez, which you can listen to here:
During the interview, Rodriguez told Coutinho:
It has always been his dream to come to America and play in the big leagues.
He is a lot different now than he was a year ago, and, though he had to go through a ‘real bad process, and make personal changes...

What Percival Taught Friedman
The architect of one of the biggest defensive turnarounds in modern baseball history, Andrew Friedman was given another tough task this offseason: build an entire major league bullpen with limited financial flexibility. In an offseason where relievers banked over $200 million, the Rays signed three relief pitchers (Kyle Farnsworth, Joel Peralta, J.P. Howell) to major league deals...

Can’t Beat The Rays? Contract ‘Em!
Ken Rosenthal recently wrote a piece in which said there are “rumblings” from some owners that they want to see the Rays (and A’s) contracted. John Romano of the St. Pete Times wrote that “Tampa Bay is now on the clock.”
Over at Business Insider I wrote a short piece about who might be behind the “rumblings,” and why it is not something...

LA Angels Leading the Arms Race
There?s a theory that?s fast becoming a law in major league baseball, pitching wins championships. The Angels in 2002 won their lone World Series by receiving a gutsy performance by a young John Lackey, while the tandem of Francisco Rodriguez and Troy Percival shortened games

How Good Are The Rays At Signing “Under-The-Radar” Free Agents?
Andrew Friedman and Co. are neck deep in their sixth hot stove season. We know the Rays are great at making trades. And we have a sense that they are pretty good at drafting. But how good are they at free agency?
The Rays are well-known for picking up hidden gems like Carlos Pena and Joaquin Benoit. But they have also missed terribly with guys like Pat Burrell and Troy Percival....

Small Market Teams Time Free Agent Bids Carefully
If MLB teams want to sign top free agents, they can’t wait much longer than the Winter Meetings. But if they can’t afford to sign elite players, they generally keep waiting. The Rays, for example, will likely see Carl Crawford and Rafael Soriano sign elsewhere, since they are rarely able to bid aggressively on free agents early in the winter.
“We don’t necessarily have...

And so far as expected….
The free agency market is already buzzing. As we sit here patiently awaiting the organization’s game plan as it develops, it is important to keep in mind that Tampa Bay Rays have built their organization on the power of their farming system and their expertise in developing raw talent. With that said, historically they are not ones to spend a great deal on outside free agent...

First Round Compensation (Part Two)
For background information on the purpose and methodology please check out part one.
Between the 2000 and 2010 drafts, 171 players netted teams a collective 219 first round compensatory picks; or roughly 15 players per offseason. The average percentage of plate appearances or innings pitched spent with the benefiting teams comes in at 37.9%. Meaning, simply, that fewer than 50% of...
Comerica Park Review
I first travelled with the Mop-up Duty boys to Comerica in 2002 on the way back from Chicago after seeing the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. It was 3 years after the ballpark had opened in 1999 and the Tigers were a terrible team that season, going 55-106. We saw them in early August - August 5th, 2002 to be specific. I remember not expecting much, but for a city that...

Los Angeles Angels Wont Catch Texas Unless Their Bullpen Gets Right.
Angel fans have been spoiled. From 1996 to 2008 it was just about automatic, the game was over in the 9th inning. Between Troy Percival and Francisco Rodriguez, Angel fans saw the two relievers combine for an amazing 524 saves. From 2000-2009 the Angels bullpen lead the American League in ERA (3.71) and was second in the Majors. However that is all ancient history as the...
