The Allure Of Tyler Yates Too Strong For Pirates To Ignore
Proving one more time that power arms still cause a stir in the loins of baseball executives, the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed Tyler Yates. Yes. Again. Affection has always surrounded Yates in Pittsburgh, as it’s quite apparent the front office sees something it likes in this 6′4″ pitcher from Hawaii. The Pirates fans have a special affection for the right-handed...

Pirates Re-Sign Tyler Yates
The Pittsburgh Pirates have re-signed reliever Tyler Yates, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America. This is a minor league contract, and presumably includes an invite to Spring Training, similar to when the Pirates re-signed Yates last year. They first acquired the right handed reliever in 2008, in a trade with the Atlanta Braves prior [...]

Catching up on Bucs news
Lots of little bits and pieces over the past few days that I’ve yet to address…
[Tyler Yates was outrighted to Indianapolis, and then he decided he rather be a free agent]. Hooray, no more Flood Gates Yates, right? Maybe. [Neal Huntington said] that “We are in dialogue with Tyler in an attempt to keep him [...]

Pirates sign Brian Burres, Neal Cotts, Tyler Yates
The Pittsburgh Pirates signed Brian Burres, Neal Cotts, and Tyler Yates to minor league contracts today. Burres and Cotts are both left handed, and we're all familiar with the right handed Yates.
Burres turns 29 in April, and has 265 career innings in the majors, with a 6.08 ERA, a 5.7 K/9, a 1.39 K/BB, and a 1.1 HR/9. Burres has mostly been a starter in his career, with...

Yates' perseverance may lead him to Bucs' 'pen
Tyler Yates contemplated moving back to Hawaii and becoming a firefighter last year when he had another setback with his elbow. A call to his dad changed his mind and he gave baseball one more chance. Now, he's a candidate to make the Pirates' bullpen.

Pirates Notebook: I Love the Bullpen
If there's one thing I like about the 7-5 start to the season, it's the bullpen. I'm very comfortable with this bullpen when the Pirates are holding a lead, or when they're trying to stay in the game. That wasn't exactly the case in years past. There was Matt Capps bombing last year. There have been guys like Tyler Yates and Denny Bautista blowing up in the middle innings...

Turn Around Tuesday Photos: Pittsburgh Pirates Pitchers Working In Bradenton
Charlie Morton works at Bradenton this morning.
The Pittsburgh Pirates Caravan is all over the highways of Western Pennsylvania, but a few hundred miles south in Bradenton today, some Pirates pitchers are right where they need to be. Working hard to help the worst pitching staff in baseball.
Charlie Morton is coming off a dismal season, while Tyler Yates is working his ass off...

Back to baseball
Some quick notes:
The Bucs are [reportedly still pursuing reliever Will Ohman]. That’s good to see, because our bullpen is likely going to be a huge mess. Ohman would add a nice lefty presence and is a very credible middle reliever. He’d be a much better last-minute addition than Tyler Yates was last year.

Game 3: Pirates 4 Braves 3
This has been a crazy, crazy week. After three days, the Pirates have been outscored by the Braves 24-18. They've seen both of their starting middle infielders get hurt, made a bunch of errors, used Tyler Yates in three straight games, and had their best start come from Zach Duke. Somehow, the Pirat...

My Thoughts on Russell, And His Replacment
I didn't write anything about this yesterday because, quite frankly, I wanted to sleep on it. The Pirates firing of Russell came as no surprise to anyone who follows the team. Someone has to go down after three seasons like we have seen, and Russell really gave no indication he was a big league manager. His ingame decisions were often baffling (pulling Duke up a ton with 2 out...

A few injury updates from today...
-Zach Duke could go on the 15-day disabled list, according to Dejan Kovacevic. Duke missed his start today, and could miss his next start on Saturday. Charlie Morton, Dana Eveland, Brian Burres, or Daniel McCutchen could all be candidates to make the start if Duke can't go.
-Brock Holt, Tyler Yates, and Neal Cotts are all out for the season...

Alvarez and Tabata cut, Super Two breakdown
The Pittsburgh Pirates made two waves of cuts this morning, first cutting Pedro Alvarez, Jose Tabata, Doug Bernier, and Jonathan Van Every. They followed that up by cutting Tyler Yates, Jimmy Barthmaier, Neal Cotts, and Craig Hansen.
Alvarez and Tabata were optioned to AAA, while the rest of the players were assigned to minor league camp. It's likely that Bernier and Van Every...

Pirates Notes: Rule 5, Duke, Yates
Dejan Kovacevic has a new column up focusing on a number of Pirates topics:
After liking what they've found in Rule 5 Draft picks Evan Meek and Donnie Veal, the Pirates are actively scouting available players and have identified some potential targets to use their #2 pick on in this year's Rule 5 Draft. Meek posted a 3.45 ERA out of the 'pen for the Buccos in 2009. And...
