Q&A: Vic Black, Pirates’ Future Closer
Vic Black is the heir apparent to the closer’s job in Pittsburgh. The 24-year-old right-hander won’t be replacing Jason Grilli in the near future, but he may be joining Grilli in the Pirates’ bullpen. Four years after being drafted 49th overall out of Dallas Baptist University, Black looks close to big-league ready.

Kris Johnson, Indians Beat Scranton 2-0 (Video)
LHP Kris Johnson pitched five strong innings, allowing only two hits while striking out five. After the 5th inning was completed, the rain came and there was a two and a half hour delay. The bullpen took over when play resumed, allowing only one more hit. Vic Black got his 8th save. I really wanted…

Prospect Trends: Some Turnarounds and Some Struggling Altoona Hitters
Nick Kingham fanned 26 in his last 17 innings.
A month into the minor league season, things are starting to take shape with the Pirates’ full-season affiliates. With a deep roster and very talented pitching staff, Indianapolis is dominating the International League with a 20-7 record. By contrast, Altoona is increasingly struggling despite a good rotation led by Jameson Taillon...
Prospect Notebook: Pirates Have a Lot of Pitching Depth in Indianapolis
The Indianapolis Indians are off to a 19-7 start this year, which is their best start in 54 years. The last time they started off this well was in 1959, when they went 22-7 to start the year. Minor league wins and losses don’t mean much. The main focus is developing players for the majors. In the Triple-A level, the focus is also on providing depth for the majors. Wins can be nice...

Hermida's Grand Slam Gives Clippers 4-0 Victory
INDIANAPOLIS- The Columbus Clippers started off their season on a high note, defeating the Indianapolis Indians 4-0 on opening day.
After struggling to find any kind of offense through the first seven innings, the Clippers’ bats finally came alive in the top of the eighth when designated hitter Jeremy Hermida launched a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam.

Which Prospects From Indianapolis Will Help the Pirates This Year?
Earlier I posted the 2013 Indianapolis Indians preview. The Triple-A squad is going to be where most of the replacements are going to come from for the Pittsburgh Pirates this year. Here is a look at some of the options in Triple-A. The goal here is to get an idea of who could arrive, when they could arrive, and what type of playing time they could see.

Pirates Rank Seventh in Baseball America’s Organizational Rankings
Baseball America has released their organizational talent rankings today, measuring the talent in each team’s farm system. They release a top 30 list in their annual Prospect Handbook, although that usually sees some changes before the web edition comes around. The Pirates didn’t actually see a change between the two versions, ranking seventh in the book and seventh today.

How Did Vic Black Get His Unusual Delivery?
Vic Black
The majority of Pirates fans haven’t had many chances to see Vic Black pitch. They’ve probably seen the numbers, highlighted by a 1.65 ERA and an 85:29 K/BB ratio in 60 innings in Altoona last year. They might have heard of his fastball, which usually sits in the 96-98 MPH range, and has touched triple digits. He’s been on top prospect lists, is named as one of the...
News and notes
Some quick Bucs notes from the past week:
World Baseball Classic:
Jason Grilli did not make an appearance in the second round, as Team Italy foolishly failed to use him while blowing two late leads to get knocked out of the tournament. The Italians tried waiting until the ninth to use their closer, but lost the lead before the ninth against both the Dominican Republic and Puerto...
Prospect Notebook: A Look at Nick Kingham’s Constantly Increasing Velocity
Nick Kingham was sitting 93-95 MPH through two innings today.
Nick Kingham pitched his first game today against the New York Yankees minor league system. Kingham started the Double-A game, going two innings while allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. The right-hander ran into some trouble in the first inning, getting hit around and having some trouble with...
Pirates Prospects on The Minor League Report Podcast
Last night I was a guest on The Minor League Report, a podcast which covers minor league baseball. Mike Passanisi, who is the Director of Communications and the broadcaster for the Altoona Curve, runs the podcast with three other minor league broadcasters — Jay Burnham (Richmond Flying Squirrels), Eric Little (Augusta GreenJackets), and Sam Sigal (Hickory Crawdads). The podcast...
Prospect Notebook: New Focus on the Running Game Extends to the Minors
It seems like there have been daily reports out of major league camp about how the Pittsburgh Pirates pitchers are focusing more on controlling the running game this year. After every caught stealing or pick off, the topic is brought up, and the answer usually given is that the importance of keeping runners in check has been stressed over and over to the pitchers.
In 2012 we saw...
Pirates Cut Eleven
The Pirates cut eleven players this morning. Vic Black, Jerry Sands, Stolmy Pimentel, Hunter Strickland, Clint Robinson and Duke Welker were all optioned to AAA. Of those names the only real surprises to me are Duke Welker and Victor Black. Not because they were sent down, but because it happened so early. Welker and…
Pirates Make First Cuts
The Pittsburgh Pirates have made their first cuts of Spring Training. So far they have cut four players today, with those players being Hunter Strickland, Vic Black, Matt Hague, and Clint Robinson. That could be all for now, but no word on that yet. I’ll update this when more information becomes available.
UPDATE 8:00 AM: Add Duke Welker and Stolmy Pimentel to the list of cuts...
Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon Set to Kick Off the Spring Training Schedule
I got down to Bradenton around noon on Wednesday, after about 15 hours of driving from Virginia. For the last two days I’ve been unpacking the moving truck. That’s not finished yet, but I thought I’d take a break for this.
The Pirates are set to open their Spring Training schedule today with a Black and Gold intrasquad scrimmage. The teams are set to go five and a half innings...
Spring Training Notes: February 19
The Pirates, still early in spring training, ran some light drills on Tuesday morning. The regimen consisted mainly of drilling the pitchers on backing up bases, fielding grounders, and numerous pitchers throwing briefly to hitters. Among the pitchers getting some mound work were A.J. Burnett, James McDonald, Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon, Jason Grilli, Mark Melancon, and Jeff...
