Moneyball begins to take its toll within Ducks athletics

Missing: Have you seen this man? 2004 CWS Champion, six CWS appearances.

How much money did Oregon baseball take in as a gross profit last year?
Answer: A measly $649,981
Any idea how much the team spent in 2011?
No worries, there’s an answer to that too. But beware, it’s disturbing: $2.9 million.
Here’s a quick economics lesson. That is a deficit of roughly $1.54 million. It doesn’t take a Wall Street tycoon to realize this simple formula–If spending more than what is being earned, it’s going to lead to a problem.
So, what happens when a team, no matter the level, doesn’t generate a profit? The stench of extinction begins to fill the air. There were pleas after pleas to bring the collegiate baseball program

Oregon’s New Straddled Triple Option Combo Series
Reported by Charles Fischer on September 18, 2012 inFish Reports | 1 Comment
The big wins do more for the next level Oregon fan than simply allow us to watch the fun plays and eye the reserves. Sub-division teams like Tennessee Tech may not provide a fair assessment of the 2012 Oregon Ducks team, as Fresno State has been the only team to offer up much resistance if any against the starters, but these first games have given an opportunity to learn about an important play series emerging, and the new wrinkles that are clearly taking a larger role in the Duck playbook than in prior years.
Chip likes to utilize his personnel to their unique strengths, so let’s see how he does it with Oregon’s new Straddled Triple Option Combo Series!

Reported by Kurt Liedtke on September 17, 2012 inFishWrap, FishWrap Archive | 0 Comments
Every week Kurt Liedtke (better known as Keeerrrttt1), co-owner of FishDuck.com, creates video blogs (vlogs) to update all you fine folk on all things FishDuck, a free-form discussion of current events about Oregon Ducks sports and all that’s new with FishDuck.com, with the occasional off-topics or rants. It’s a little off-the-cuff, perhaps slightly pretentious, somewhat rambling, and hopefully entertaining…so kick back, relax, drink up, and let’s talk a little Duck sports.
The opinions expressed in these videos are strictly the opinions of Keeerrrttt1 and do not necessarily reflect the views of all involved with FishDuck.com.

Injuries and Access: It’s Time for an Injury Report
Reported by Nathan Roholt on September 17, 2012 inFishWrap, FishWrap Archive | 1 Comment
There is a routine for fans to deal with injuries. The play ends, everyone goes back to their side of the line of scrimmage, and one player remains on the turf. We know the perceived severity of injury based on how much the player writhes in agony, or worse, how long he remains motionless.
The more members of the team’s staff that runs out onto the field, the worse it appears to be. If we see members of the opposing team’s staff, then we know something is really wrong. Eventually, the player is helped off the field, either under their own power, or by cart, and removed from the field of play.
Once play resumes, fans do their best to forget about the injury they just witnessed on the field. After the game inquiries are made

Let’s just get our earplugs out now, because this week will be nothing but “Notre Dame is back!” talk after their win over Michigan State, a darkhorse national championship contender. Arkansas’ disastrous season off both off and on-field issues just got a little longer after playing Alabama this past weekend, shutout in Fayatteville for the first time since 1966, 52-0.
Plus, Virginia Tech is just following usual protocol–lose to a team they are supposed to beat, but then win out and make it to a BCS bowl game. I did not see that upset coming, Pitt has looked horrible the last two weeks, but put it all together for that game.

There is no cheering in the Autzen Stadium press box. No asking for autographs from players, or having your photo taken with players or coaches. It is the third rail in the life of a sports reporter, do not touch it. There is no wearing Oregon’s colors, unless green and yellow happen to be part of your business casual ensemble.
Yet even if my usual costume was missing, as an Oregon fanatic playing the role of media for FishDuck.com at Saturday’s Tennessee Tech-Oregon game, I half expected the elevator carrying me from beneath Autzen’s seating bowl up to the press box to reveal not a wide-angle view of Rich Brooks field but Saint Peter and the Pearly Gates.

The view from the Autzen Stadium press box

TENNESSEE TECH GOLDEN EAGLES at OREGON DUCKSSaturday, September 15thkickoff 12:06 pm

Two weeks into the season, and we know about as much about the Oregon football team as we did on August 31st, save for a couple unfortunate injuries. The defense, as expected, has been stout, yet untested. The offense, occasionally explosive, but maddeningly inconsistent. The special teams? Non-existent at best, turnover prone at worst.
The Ducks, after nonchalant victories over Arkansas State and Fresno State, welcome in the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles to close out the out-of-conference schedule.
Another opportunity arrives for Oregon to work out the kinks in the offense, and continue to build depth in the secondary–hopefully while bucking the trend of losing key

Good morning Fish Fans. I know that we are all still trying to catch our collective breaths after last night’s thrilling Washington State/UNLV game. The action on the field was end-to-end and non-stop, but the most exciting moment came late in the third quarter when entertainer extraordinaire Wayne Newton made an appearance in support of the Runnin’ Rebels.
It is unfortunate that he showed up before his latest botox injection had fully set in, but it was exciting to see him there nonetheless.

By the year’s end the Ducks were a bowl champion with all the makings of a finely-tuned offensive juggernaut set for big things in 98’, but it certainly didn’t start that way. Patchwork lines, first-time starters, a dual quarterback rotation, and other tinkering was the storyline of much of the year, the Ducks searching to find their identity as a program with most of the Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl era players gone.
For all the success that has come to the University of Oregon football program in the ensuing years, it is important to recall the years where growth and development paved the pa

For years living in Eugene has provided perfect direct access to the fans, whether walking around town/campus or on their way to the game. On game days the excitement is palpable, entire families walk into the store dressed head to toe in yellow and green. The little girls dressed in tiny cheerleader outfits, the little boys in jerseys that completely swallow them up.
It’s given me a chance to hear directly from the fans both before and after the game–their anticipation and reaction, their favorite parts

OL Doug Brenner (NR/Portland, OR) speaks with Chip Kelly.

Sunday, Oregon landed its third offensive line recruit in hybrid-athlete Doug Brenner (NR/Portland, OR). Brenner joins the likes of Alex Redmond (4-Star/Los Alamitos, CA) and Evan Voeller (4-Star/West Linn, OR/Rivals250) in what could be one of the most athletic lines ever assembled in college football.
“I called Coach Greatwood and told him I was committing, and he handed the phone to coach Chip Kelly and they both said they were really excited,” said Brenner.“ (Coach) Greatwood wants me to play center for Oregon at the next level. I am ready to do whatever they need me to do.”

A Special Fish Report: The Pac-12 Conference Forbidding Highlight and Analysis Videos

I am now out of the Oregon football video analysis business, due to new rules established by the Pac-12 Conference regarding use of game footage.
Per guidelines provided to all media as of Friday, September 7th, no news agency can use game footage for broadcast or on a website past 48-hours after the game has concluded without a license granted through XOS Digital.
Thus beginning for the 2012 season, all game footage video HAS to be removed from all TV and sports websites by Monday evening. Those videos cannot exceed three minutes in length for that 48-hour period, including footage taken by a TV station/news source on their own, coupled with footage taken from th

It was painful for us to learn that the football Camelot in Autzen Stadium for the first half of the first two games was just a dream. The new quarterback wunderkind, “St. Marc” (as he was called by high school teammates) showed us that he was fallible, and the offense can stumble. Yet with some of the disappointments are also some tremendous learning opportunities for us as fans, and an interesting development to note for the rest of the season. Let’s get to it!
The abilities of Colt Lyerla have been well chronicled as one of the more amazing athletes to sign with Oregon in recent years. The YouTube video showing him jumping to a table six feet off the ground from a flat-footed beginning has
