It's Here: National Signing Day!

Most up to date news: https://twitter.com/calbearblog

-As of 3:00PM PST
Well this certainly has been a recruiting year for the ages. Today is finally the day that things can be made official as our verbal commits are signing their national letters of intent.
There have been some recent unfortunate developments that we expected, as Shaq Thompson has signed with Washington, Jordan Payton followed, Ellis McCarthy signed with UCLA, and Arik Armstead is going to Oregon. That's two 5 star and two 4 star recruits that we lost due to Lupoi bailing ship to a Pac-12 foe 2 weeks before National Signing Day.
I think the best response to all the changes due to Lupoi leaving was actually summarized by an 18 year old, our QB of the future Zach Kline - via California Golden Blogs:
"Those who want to be Bears, who bleed blue and gold, will stay with it," he said. "You don't play for one coach. You play for yourself, you play for coach Tedford and you play for the university. I think ... the guys

Lupoi is off to Washington and there goes the recruiting class...

By now all Golden Bears fans have heard about the terrible week our football program is having. After a groundbreaking day of recruiting just a week ago, it has all been unravelled by the selfish actions of a once loyal Golden Bear.

Tosh Lupoi's departure to Washington is painful on several levels, but until reading this California Golden Blogs report I didn't know how damaging it was. If the facts of this report are true, Tosh Lupoi reneged on all his talk of honor, dedication, and honesty he passed on to recruits. Jordan Payton is reconsidering his verbal commitment, Shaq Thompson is now 50/50 between Cal or UW, Arik Armstead (and his USC transfer brother) has pretty much ruled out Cal, and Ellis McCarthy de-committed from the Bears and pledged to UCLA. Our top 10 class is now potentially in shambles unless Tedford works some kind of magic to keep these 18 year-olds committed to the Bears.

The entire recruiting scene is damaged by this because if reports are true, Lupoi has basically

1/7/12: Bears have a huge recruiting day!

The Cal Golden Bears had a monumental recruiting day on Saturday as they received verbal commitments from Grant's Shaquille Thompson (5 star S), Oaks Christian's Jordan Payton (4 star WR), and former USC commit Ellis McCarthy (5 star DT)! Rumor has it that we'll land another 4 star DE from Sacramento, Pleasant Grove's Arik Armstead, but we're still waiting on the final word. Thompson is the little brother of former Golden Bear standout Syd'Quan Thompson and another big recruit from Grant (Vei Moala, Syd'Quan, Worrell Williams, Puka Lopa)
This is exactly how the Bears needed to be represented at a venue like the Army All-America game, and hopefully these commitments will push other guys to put on the Blue and Gold as well. With Memorial Stadium on schedule to open up its renovated doors in a few months, and the new Student-Athlete High Performance Center up and running, this hopefully will be a sign of things to come in the future rather than a one-off outlier for 2012.

2012 Cal Football Schedule Released: Oh Boy!

Now that 2011 is officially over we can focus on what matters...2012! The Golden Bears will open the fully renovated Memorial Stadium with a great schedule, starting off with the Nevada Wolfpack on 9/1. Here is the full schedule:
Nevada - Berkeley, CA - 9/1
Southern Utah - Berkeley, CA - 9/8
Ohio State - Columbus, OH - 9/15
USC - Los Angeles, CA - 9/22
Arizona State - Berkeley, CA - 9/29
UCLA - Berkeley, CA - 10/6
Washington State - Pullman, WA - 10/13
Stanfurd - Berkeley, CA - 10/20
Utah - Salt Lake City, UT - 10/27
Washington - Berkeley, CA - 11/2
Oregon - Berkeley, CA - 11/10
Oregon State - Corvallis, OR - 11/17

For all of you observant readers out there, yes, the Bears are playing a full season without a single week off! In addition to not having a bye, the 115th Big Game will not be played at the end of November as it has been scheduled every other year. I'm not happy about either of these caveats, but other than that it's a solid schedule
This is one of the most challenging

2011 Holiday Bowl: Culmination of Season of Frustration

The California Golden Bears had an up and down season again this year, and it was capped off with a great summary of our ineptitude in the Holiday Bowl against Texas. Every Cal fan hates Texas (especially Mack Brown) for the 2004 campaign Brown led to push Texas ahead of Cal in the final BCS rankings that left us out of the Rose Bowl yet again. If an Aaron Rodgers led Cal team cannot make it to the promised land, how can we expect Zach Maynard...ah, I'm digressing already.
Anyway, this was the year where we could at least have a chance to beat a down Texas squad whose only strengths were running the football and defense. They do not have any Colt McCoy's or Vince Young's, nor is Ricky Williams running over people. Yes, this Texas squad is more talented than the Bears but not as much as they usually are. I felt pretty confident that if we could force David Ash to pass against our strong defense, protected the ball, and threw it to Keenan Allen we'd be sitting pretty. Well, unfortunatel
