Bonding on The Biggest Loser

I think NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” in spite of its title, is one of the most encouraging shows on TV. The reality weight loss competition is real people in the midst of real struggle. Obese competitors are facing food and physical challenges day in and day out. But there is real triumph, too. Thanks to the magic of Tivo, I just finished watching this season’s finale and am celebrating with Danni, the eventual winner.
The contestants on the show always talk about how quickly they bond with their teammates. That makes sense to me. I think adversity sparks bonding. You bond when you encourage one another, when you look beyond yourself and lift up someone else. And if your feet are in the fire you need all of the encouragement you can get.
Who on your team needs to be encouraged? In your circle of friends or family, someone’s feet is being held to the fire. They need you to bond with them and help them triumph. We can help you encourage and put a smile on someone’s face via greeting cards, stationer

Our royal experiment

Well, the Sacramento Kings lost. It was a close game. If the refs had called a foul like they should have the Kings might have taken the Milwaukee Bucks into overtime. Our son cried at the end of the game. This is the first time the Kings have lost when he has attended. But overall the experiment went well. We invited his friend and his therapist to the game to see how he would do handling it all. With his disabilities each challenge like this can be overwhelming. He got restless at times but for the most part stayed engaged in the game and what was going on around him. I got hugs almost every time the Kings scored which I love. And Jimmer Fredette had a good game and he is our favorite Kings player so that was an added bonus. Get 'em next time Sacramento!

Royal family outing part 2

The Special Team Seibers are headed for another Sacramento Kings game this weekend. Sunday evening they play the Milwaukee Bucks. Every game my son has attended the Kings have won. He is looking to improve his record to 6-0. The Kings need to give us season tickets!
This will be an adventurous outing for us because some of our son's friends are coming along. With his autism, it can be a challenge preparing him for the noise and the crowds of an NBA contest. So far he has done well. We are adding the new element of having a friend come with us to help him prepare for a new dimension, a new challenge. It should be fun.

Royal family outing

We're not really a royal family. But we did watch the Sacramento Kings play today at Sleep Train Arena. So we saw basketball royalty in action. Our six year old son loves going to the games. He hugs me every time the Kings make a basket. They made a lot today as they blew out the visiting Charlotte Bobcats, 119-83. Plus he stomps his feet when the crowd yells "Defense." The Kings played great today, for once, and we even won a free T-shirt. All in all, a great family fun-filled day.

Baffled by release of Brooks

I am shocked that the Sacramento Kings released veteran guard Aaron Brooks today. Shocked and bummed. Nothing that the Kings do makes ANY sense to me. I liked Brooks. He was usually the replacement guard for Isaiah Thomas, often the 6th man for the team. Brooks even started many games for the season during a period where Thomas was benched. It has always been a mystery to me while Thomas is lauded with all the hype and Brooks seemingly ignored. I always admired Brooks’ ability to pass the ball effectively and he had to be one of the assist leaders on the squad. So his departure is odd and discomforting.
If the Kings want to release some people, they should start with their perpetually immature center, DeMarcus Cousins and their hapless coach, Keith Smart.

Revisiting Invincible

The Mrs. and I have been enjoying some recent trips to the local Drive-In Theater. Yes, they still have those (only one in the entire Sacramento area, though). It's been a great outlet for entertainment because 1) it's cheaper than paying $10 to visit your local multiplex, 2) you can bring your own goodies so you don't have to get a bank loan to buy popcorn and 3) we can bring our son and he falls asleep in the back seat.On one trip we saw Invincible, the Disney underdog sports movie. Disney has dominated this genre of movie the last few years with strong films such as "The Rookie," "Remember the Titans" and "Miracle." "Invincible" is a solid film, starring Mark Wahlberg as a 30 year old bartender who decides to try out for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. Greg Kinnear portrays Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil. It's based on the true story of Vince Papale who played three years for the Eagles in the late 1970s. Both of us enjoyed the film.
What's in a (nick)name? Update #2

I learned of another nickname for the Sacramento Kings players. This one is for one of the new players recently acquired in the trade with the Houston Rockets. According to Kings' TV Color Analyst, Jerry Reynolds, Patrick Patterson prefers the nickname "P Pat." Well, OK then. I also deleted the names on the roster of the three Kings players who were traded, Francisco Garcia, Tyler Honeycutt and Thomas Robinson.

I don't care who is on the red carpet

“And the Oscar goes to…”
Wait, that’s on tonight? Oh, well. Sorry, I’ve got to watch me some NBA action. My Sacramento Kings are playing the New Orleans Hornets.
There was a time in my life when I liked watching the Academy Awards. I even hosted an Oscars party one year. But now, married with a child, we never seem to get to the movies so I don’t know any of the nominated films or performances. Plus, the older I get, the more conservative I become (and I was already pretty conservative). Hollywood’s excesses, liberalism and moral depravity just are not as appealing.
What has become appealing is daily sports action. Part of that has to do with being unemployed. I like having something to look forward to. Sports provide an almost daily dose of fun and adrenaline. My family has really adopted the sports action as well and it provides some neat family time. We even have plans to go to a Sacramento Kings game next week, thanks to a bonus my wife got at work. Thanks, dear.
See if I ever win an Os

Sorry about 'Cisco

I’m not shedding any tears for Sacramento Kings’ players Thomas Robinson and Tyler Honeycutt who were traded this week to the Houston Rockets. Honeycutt never plays and Robinson is too new to the league for me to appreciate what his skills and worth might be in the future.
However, I do have disappointment about the Kings’ decision to include Francisco Garcia in that trade. According to press reports, up until the trade, Garcia’s entire NBA career had been in Sacramento. The Kings’ TV broadcasters described ‘Cisco as a smart veteran in the locker room who was always sharing his wisdom with the rookies. I often witnessed his three-point shooting providing an offensive spark to the struggling squad. I am sorry to see him go. To paraphrase a Tony Bennett lyric, Who lost their heart? The Kings’ fans to Cisco.

Tebow Trouble?

The media wants to paint Tim Tebow into a corner. He was scheduled to speak at an historic Baptist church in Texas but has recently pulled out of that public appearance. According to press reports, the pastor of this large church has said some incendiary things about homosexuals and President Obama.
When Tebow pulled out of the speaking engagement he did not give specific reasons for his decision. His answer was fairly vague. As a result I don’t think the controversy will completely go away until he clarifies his decision and his opinion on homosexuality. A Facebook friend and I were discussing the matter earlier today. Here are my posts on what Tebow should do.
POST #1: “As difficult as it might prove to be, we must be willing to publicly declare our opposition to homosexuality based upon the Bible. It will be hard to hate the sin and love the sinner but I don't think we have any other option. My understanding is that this Pastor was also quoted as saying President Obama was the antichrist.
Positive Pro-Bowl press

“Book ‘em Danno.”
When I was a kid my parents were huge fans of Hawaii Five-O. Now as an adult, my wife is a big fan of the updated version. I was blogging earlier this week while she was watching Monday’s episode. I got sucked into the show because it cleverly featured the NFL Pro-Bowl in the plotline. It was entertaining to see Houston Texans running back Arian Foster guest star as himself in the episode. He did a credible acting job as a witness to an altercation who ends up punching a guy out.
These days the Pro-Bowl doesn’t get a lot of respect. It has a decent TV audience but it gets lambasted by the press for poor player performances. Positive media coverage can’t hurt and it was wise for the NFL to cooperate with Hawaii Five-O. Because the annual all-star game is set in Hawaii it would be fun for the CBS drama to incorporate it into an episode each season.
Next year, let’s hope they get Tim Tebow to guest star.

No Tebow truths, just rumors

There’s a new Tim Tebow rumor every day. He’s dating this starlet. He is being traded to this or that team. He is guilty of that sin. Tebow needs his own media empire just to manage all that is said about him. Twitter, in particular, explodes with Tebow news daily.
The latest Twitter rumor today was that the New York Jets were going to try and trade him at the NFL Combine. That’s fine with me. I want him to go to a team that wants him and will play him. The Jets apparently didn’t want him and didn’t treat him with respect. The Denver Broncos didn’t either. Well, there are still 30 NFL teams left. I pray Tebow can find one that will value his hard work, humility and hustle.
Until then the rumor mill is working overtime.

What's in a (nick)name? Updated

I learned of a couple of new nicknames for the Sacramento Kings players in tonight's game. I have added them to my list from earlier this season. The new names are in bold. Incidentally, I am not sure it is a good idea to have "Reke" as your nickname. "Reke," sounds the same as "wreak" which is not a compliment.
DeMarcus Cousins “Cuz" & "DMC" Obvious derivation of his name, & initials
