Atlanta Falcons Select CB Robert Alford In The 2013 NFL Draft

2.28 Atlanta Falcons Robert Alford, CB, Southeastern Louisiana (5-10, 188)
With the 28th pick in the second round of the NFL Draft, the Falcons selected CB Robert Alford from Southeastern Louisiana. The Falcons defense lost both of their starting corners in free agency and had to address this position in the draft. In the first round they selected CB Desmond Trufant out of Washington.
Now with Trufant and Alford, the Falcons are banking on one of them to play opposite likely starter Asante Samuel. And it’s even possible that they both are starting by the end of the year with Samuel coming in on nickel packages only. The Falcons defense plays nickel about 50% of the time and no matter what, both rookies should be seeing plenty of time on the field this season.
Alford does possess fluid cover skills but struggles in run support, an area the Falcons were hoping to improve upon this season. In 2012, the Falcons gave up an average of 123.2 yards per game, good for 21st in the league. So ...

Miami Dolphins Select CB Jamar Taylor In The 2013 NFL Draft

2.22 Miami Dolphins Jamar Taylor , CB, Boise State (5-10 1/2, 192)
With the 22nd pick in the second round of the NFL Draft, the Dolphins selected CB Jamar Taylor from Boise State. He was the sixth defensive back taken in the second round and an area the Dolphins had to get some help at. Last season, the Dolphins secondary only had 10 interceptions and they lost their best corner to free agency. They did sign Brent Grimes in the offseason which should solidify one side but the other side will be open for Taylor. Barring a horrible performance in training camp, Jamar should be able to start from week 1. He is a physical corner and should perform well in both man and zone schemes. He will also not shy away from helping in run support.
With all of the moves the Dolphins did this offseason in free agency, the choice to go DB here in the second round will help balance the overall team. Miami could be very fun to watch this season.
During Jamar’s senior year, he was selected to the First-T...

Fantasy Football: Assessing Torrey Smith

After being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Torrey Smith wasted no time in becoming a major part of the offense. In just two seasons, he has already racked up nearly 1700 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. With those two years under his belt and a potentially increased role on the horizon, just how valuable will he be for the 2013 fantasy football season?

Although Smith did see a 15 target increase in 2012, his catch-rate dropped and he was unable to fully take advantage of the increase. Heading into 2013, Anquan Boldin, who averaged 6.8 targets a game in 2012, is no longer with the Ravens. Dennis Pitta may receive biggest boost in targets resulting from Boldin’s departure – a situation that Denny Carter went into great detail about for The Fake Football. However, at the very least, Smith should also see a small boost. Just one more target per game would raise Smith’s target total to around 125 – I detailed his potential statistics with more ...

Aaron Rodgers 2013 Fantasy Football Preview and Projection

Aaron Rodgers is primed for another big fantasy season in 2013.
As a fantasy football expert, most of what you do is predicting the future. Trying to foresee how players will perform and how certain situations play out is essentially what fantasy football prognosticating is all about.
Normally, predicting the future is a difficult thing — but when it comes to projecting Aaron Rodgers fantasy value for the 2013 season, nothing could be easier. That’s because the best way to describe Rodgers fantasy production is consistency, like unbelievably consistent.
Since Rodgers became the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers in 2008, he has never finished lower than second in fantasy points scored among quarterbacks. In fact, he’s finished first in standard scoring formats each of the past four seasons.
Most fantasy experts will tell you that it’s wise to wait on drafting a quarterback but with Rodgers sitting there in the first round, it’s kind of hard to pass on him. For starters, ...

Break Out Review: Kyle Rudolph

Over the course of the off-season we’ll be looking back at some of the major players who ‘broke out’ or outperformed their ADP by a drastic amount in the hopes that we can get a feel for what their 2013 fantasy football season holds and whether the break out is here to stay. Today the review subject is Kyle Rudolph.

There were a lot of breakout Tight Ends in 2012 – Dennis Pitta and Heath Miller come to mind – but I don’t know if I will be covering all of them so I wanted to highlight a guy we talked about in pre-season as a 2012 fantasy sleeper in Kyle Rudolph. Kyle finished tied for second for touchdowns scored on the year among tight ends with Jimmy Graham and only 1 ahead of Heath. However, Kyle played the whole season unlike the other two so I’m going to say he really finished 4th. But outside of the touchdowns, there was still plenty to like about Rudolph’s season and also plenty to hate. With that let’s take a look back on his 2012 break out season and see how it holds u...

Eagles Waive Undrafted Rookie RB Miguel Maysonet

A few days ago, the Eagles signed former Cowboy RB Felix Jones. That meant someone was likely on the way out the door, and that someone is undrafted rookie running back Miguel Maysonet out of Stony Brook.
At one point during the offseason, it was believed by some that Maysonet had a decent shot to make the team. Apparently his pro-day at Stony Brook caused a lot of scouts to lower his draft stock but he was signed quickly by the Eagles after the draft. He’s likely to latch on somewhere before training camps officially get underway.
During his senior year, he racked up 1,964 rushing yards.

Victor Cruz Contract Talks with New York Giants “Going Slowly”

This past week, reports of the negotiations between the New York Giants and Victor Cruz “were on the two-yard line” with a deal potentially getting done at the end of the week.
It’s looking like the negotiations will carry on starting at the beginning of next week, as Mike Florio from NBC’s Pro Football Talk is reporting that the negotiations with Cruz “are moving slowly.”
Cruz has been looking for a contract in the $10-11 million range, while the Giants are more comfortable paying him roughly in the $7-8 million range, which is what their current offer to Cruz is reportedly worth.
On Wednesday, Dan Benton from Giants 101 had reported that Cruz dropped his contract demands from the reported $10-11 million and was much closer to the $7-8 million range that the Giants were offering. From this news, fans were speculating that a deal should get done rather quickly, but it has not and the saga continues.
If Cruz does not sign a deal before June 17, then the Giants can rescind the first-r...

2013 PPR Fantasy Football Tight End Rankings: Top 25 (Post NFL Draft Update)

Despite his injury issues, Rob Gronkowski still tops the PPR Fantasy Football Tight End Rankings for 2013
The tight end position is one that sometimes gets overlooked in terms of fantasy football. But as we have learned over the past few seasons, the tight end position can absolutely produce some big-time playmakers in the realm of fantasy football, so it’s a position that needs your attention.
However, entering the 2013 season there are some pretty big unknowns as far as tight end is concerned. The biggest question mark surrounds the health of New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. Gronk has been incredible as a fantasy player over the past two seasons, except for the fact that he missed five games last season due to injury.
Despite his injury, Gronk still finished with 200 fantasy points in point-per-reception formats and averaged over 18 fantasy points per game. He also averaged an un-heard of 2.53 fantasy points per target, which is a ridiculous number considering the ne...

2013 PPR Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Rankings: Top 40 (Post NFL Draft Update)

Calvin Johnson is the consensus choice as no.1 in our 2013 PPR Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Rankings
To some the end of the NFL Draft signals the end of the NFL offseason period. Yet, to others, the completion of the draft process is the beginning of the fantasy football season. Now that rosters are mostly set and the significant player movement has already happened, it’s a great time to re-evaluate our 2013 PPR Fantasy Football Wide Receiver rankings.
Many things have changed since our first set of rankings that was done before the offseason began. Since then, Wes Welker has become a Denver Bronco. Mike Wallace is a Miami Dolphin and numerous rookie wide receivers have found homes in the National Football League.
However, in the past rookie wide receivers have struggled to make an immediate fantasy impact. It does happen from time-to-time, such as Julio Jones and A.J. Green in 2011. Both players had strong rookie seasons and finished in the top-25 of fantasy points scored by wide...

Oakland Raiders Draft OT Manelik Watson In The 2013 NFL Draft

2.10 Oakland Raiders Manelik Watson, OT, Florida State (6-5, 310)
With the tenth pick in the second round of the NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select Florida State offensive tackle Manelik Watson. He is a former basketball player who only played two years of football and will need some time developing in the NFL. It’s not ideal pick for an Oakland squad that could use players that no what they are doing from day one, but Watson has the raw skills to develop into a potential starting tackle and even maybe a left tackle down the road. The Raiders must have been really high to take Watson with the tenth pick in the 2nd round because what they really needed was a guard. It’s possible, Watson could slide into guard at first but we’ll find out more once training camp starts.
Watson comes in with nice size and long arms, he’s also got great lateral movement, probably a result of his basketball background. But he lacks the strength to push blockers away for the run game, which is why he co...

Chicago Bears Sign 2013 First Round Pick Kyle Long

Let’s face it, the Chicago Bears offensive line was a complete mess the past two seasons. And maybe drafting Kyle Long with the twentieth pick in the first round was a bit of a reach but it was still a solid pick for a need they had to address.
They officially inked Kyle, son of NFL great Howie Long, to a four-year deal. He should immediately start at right guard and possibly move to right tackle this season. Long has great athleticism but needs to work on his overall strength.

Detroit Lions Draft CB Darius Slay In 2013 NFL Draft

2.4 Detroit Lions Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State (6-0, 192)
With the fourth pick in the second round of the NFL Draft, the Lions selected CB Darius Slay out of Mississippi State. For the second year in a row the Lions go after a player with injury concerns. In 2012, they drafted WR Ryan Broyles who was coming into the NFL with a newly rehabbed knee. This time, they select Slay who tore his meniscus during the off-season. He was a potential first-rounder before the injury and the Lions hope he can fully recover to stabilize a secondary that has been a mess for as long as I can remember. Last year alone, the Lions started 10 different combinations in the secondary.
Darius, if healthy, will start from day one. As a Lions fan, I sure hope he can, because watching our secondary crumble around a solid defensive line the past few seasons is almost too much.
He has great size for a corner and tremendous speed running a 4.36 forty. With only 13 starts in college, Slay comes into the NFL ...

New Orleans Saints Sign Free Agent DL Isaako Aaitui

The New Orleans Saints and free agent defensive lineman Isaako Aaitui have agreed to an undisclosed contract. Due to the circumstances and the fact that he hasn’t done much at all in the NFL, the deal is most likely a one-year agreement. Either way, Aaitui will compete for a backup spot on the Saints roster and with enough hard work, could stick.

Miami Dolphins Sign TE Dion Sims To Four-Year Deal

The Miami Dolphins and tight end Dion Sims, a 2013 NFL draft pick of theirs, have agreed to a four-year deal. While the numbers haven’t been announced, it will be more than the $2.322 million that their fifth-round pick Mike Gillislee agreed to. Sims has solid receiving and blocking potential and could turn himself into a solid NFL tight end if he works hard enough at it and gets a break or two here and there.
