NHL Playoff Observations -- Thursday

Just a few things that caught my eye:

Brad Richards, popcorn vendor? I know he has struggled, but there's no way be should be in the press box. No bloody way.

Patrick Kane just hasn't been good enough. Three shifts in the last 11 minutes? And the last was after the empty netter? Where's the fire in the belly? He's giving up way too easily.

Tuukka Rask really shouldn't give up hockey for figure skating. That triple flip he attempted left him flat on his arse and got Carl Hagelin off the schneid.

12:03 and 8:38 -- any guesses? The ice times of Brent Seabrook and Nick Leddy, respectively. Wow. And while I'm at it, where were Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp, any way?

Why is it that we say we love honesty and hate the pre-packaged sound bites from players, but lose our minds when Daniel Alfredsson delivers the former? He was completely defeated after that 7-2 shellacking. It showed.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Friday (Thursday, too)

Just a few things that caught my eye:

Four shots, three goals ... and his second career hat playoff hat trick. The third goal was Sidney Crosby's 100th playoff point, a feat accomplished in merely 75 games. Plus he's the fifth fastest to hit that 100-point mark. Who was faster? Just Wayne Gretzky (46 games), Mario Lemieux (50), Jari Kurri (67) and Mike Bossy (74). Now that's elite company.

Where-o-where has my Brad Richards gone? Oh, where-o-where could he be? Oh right -- behind the play, struggling to catch up. Sometimes skills trickle away; sometimes they just fall off a cliff. Sad.

Craig Anderson was rattled -- he's going to be seeing visions of Sidney Crosby every time he tries to get some sleep. What are the odds Paul MacLean starts Robin Lehner next game? The battle of the back ups awaits.

The more the Kings play, the more they look unstoppable. What are the odds of a repeat? #LAKingsCrazyGood.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Round Two Wednesday

Just a few things that caught my eye:

Patrick Sharp is 31-3 this season. Yes, the Hawks have only lost three times with him in the lineup. Wow.

Moths to a light -- the Wings were puck focused all night long. That will change next game ... might not change the outcome by much, though.

Justin Abdelkader got in Dave Bolland's face at the mid-point of the second period. What a mistake. Bolland is a heart and soul guy for the Hawks and he'd been sleepwalking until that point. He was wide awake -- and dominant -- from that point forward.

Speaking of Bolland, he's going to be having a breakaway nightmare for weeks. Yes, Jimmy Howard make a good save, but c'mon Davey Boy -- how'd you miss that yawning net?

And speaking of misses, how did Pavel Datsyuk not get a shot on net? Shoot, man, SHOOT!

Jonathan Toews has just three assists in six postseason games, yet the Hawks have just one loss. What happens when his offe...

NHL Playoff Observations -- Round Two Tuesday

Just a few things that caught my eye:

Team captains do not act like children. They do not blame others. They stand up and accept responsibility. Alexander Ovechkin has been looking in that fun house mirror again. Have I ever mentioned how I much I can't stand people like that?

Special teams -- will they be the story of the second round? They sure were in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

"Bleep happens." No guff, Erik Karlsson. The D -- including you -- made way too many mistakes. And you can't expect your goalie to bail you out against a team as powerful as the Pens.

Erik Gryba is a big boy, but so is Brooks Orpik. I wonder how many Gs they pulled on that hit. I once hit a brick wall like that when I was playing hockey. I gave up 5" and at least 60 lbs, and had whiplash for three weeks. I feel your pain.

Raffi Torres is at his best when he plays with an edge. But that hit on Jarret Stoll was the old Torres, ...

NHL Playoff Observations -- Monday

Just a few things that caught my eye:

Chris Hadfield returned to Earth at 10:31 p.m. Eastern time a sad man -- Canada's space station commander is a HUGE Leafs' fan. No wonder he had a hard time getting out of the space capsule. He had to dry his tears first.

Andrew Ference arrived at the arena in a walking boot. Wade Redden was a late scratch. And the Bruins lost Dennis Seidenberg after two shifts. They may have gotten out of the first round, but they won't get far with a back-end held together with chewing gum and bailing wire.

Henrik Lundqvist really is the king. As he goes, so go the Rangers.

Hands up if you picked Derick Brassard to be the Rangers' top scorer after round one. No-one? I thought so. Deal him now, keeper leaguers -- he'll never be worth more.

The high-octane Caps' offense poured in 149 goals in 48 games this season -- that's 3.1 per game. The post season? They managed just 12 goals al...

The Los Angeles Kings Recall Anthony Stewart From Minors

The Los Angeles Kings have recalled winger, Anthony Stewart, from the minors. Stewart hadn’t played for the Kings this season after getting traded from Carolina before the new CBA had been finalized. In previous seasons though, he had played many games with Carolina, Winnipeg and Florida. He totaled 157 games played the past two seasons and should be able to carve out minutes for the Kings next season if they decide to keep him.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Sunday

Just a few things that caught my eye:

Optimus Reim. Reim Minister. I don't care if the nicknames are any good; I just know the goalie is. James Reimer has proved his detractors wrong and even Roberto Luongo has become a fan. Bobby Lou's tweet after the game? #REIM4SOCHI. Now that's funny.

Ho hum, Henrik Lundqvist was the difference for the Rangers. Again. The guy was his typical brilliant self. But why isn't anyone talking about Braden Holtby who has allowed one fewer goal in the same six games? Just wondering ...

Emerson Etem is a greyhound on ice. Or maybe thoroughbred. Man, can he fly.

Jake Gardiner has gone from goat to god on the Leafs' blue line. He's been their best defender; his confidence is through the roof. Remember that come draft day and move him up a few notches on your cheat sheet.

I get it that narrowing down the Hart nominees to just three is painfully difficult, but shouldn't my boy...

NHL Playoff Observations -- Saturday

Just a few things that caught my eye:

What's the over-under on the number of questions Erik Karlsson will get about "the Matt Cooke incident." You know, team owner Eugene Melnyk still believes it was deliberate and says he is getting forensic evidence to prove it. Quick, take away his tin foil.

Man, the Isles looked good early -- they should have been up by at least two. But they just couldn't sustain it. Dang.

November 21, 2011 -- that was the last time Brooks Orpik scored a goal. He sure picks his moments, doesn't he? It makes up for some of those massive defensive gaffes he made in the series.

The Pens' D is going to be glaringly exposed against the speedy Sens. Orpik, Douglas Murray and even Paul Martin were burned at various points because of their cement feet, and that was against the Isles. The Sens are faster, on average, than the boys in blue and orange. Uh-oh.

Advantage Sens -- goal and defen...

NHL Playoff Observations -- Friday

Just a few things that caught my eye:

James Reimer, two; Roberto Luongo, zero. Playoff wins, that is -- isn't that what Leafs' fans thought they'd get out of a Bobby Lou trade? Any chance they eat crow?

Where are you, Rick Nash? Brad Richards? And how much cash is tied up in you two stiffs?

It's tough to dominate 19:59.58 of a period and see the tide turn in the last 0.2 seconds. Dustin Penner surprised last postseason -- can he continue it this time out?

Welcome to the postseason, Mike Ribeiro. It's about time you delivered something. Now it's your turn, Nazem Kadri -- you can show up any time.

Brian Elliott has big onions for a goalie -- he didn't even flinch when Dustin Brown came in hard on a breakaway late in the second. Impressive. He made Brown make the first move and then just calmly did his job while came close to a separated shoulder.

NHL Playoff Observations -- Wednesday

Read my lips, Dion Phaneuf – hit the guy if you’re going to pinch. Better yet, DO NOT PINCH. He’s a decent player, but a crappy decision maker. Yikes.

David Krejci is money in the bank in the postseason. His hattie was just his third, three-point effort in his last four games. Ten points in four games. Wow.

Breaking news, Toronto fans. Elisa Cuthbert (fiancé of Dion Phaneuf) was not giving April Reimer (wife of James) the stink-eye after the winning goal. Gotta love this market.

Chip and wait. Chip and wait. Gravol couldn’t have made the third period better in the Kings-Blues’ game. The Kings did everything to bring the game to a halt. It worked for 19:15. Thank the hockey gods for overtime, Kings’ fans.

I took Bobby Ryan (three points) and Corey Perry (one point) in my playoff pool. I should have taken Nick Bonino and Kyle Palmieri (four points each). Sigh.

Blackhawks Could Be Without Dave Bolland And Ray Emery Thursday

The Chicago Blackhawks could be without two players Thursday night for Game 5. Center Dave Bolland is doubtful with a pulled groin and Ray Emery is suffering from lower body pain. While they will miss Bolland, Emery is just an emergency backup for playoff games, so if he does miss the game it shouldn’t be a blow to the Chicago squad.

Despite playing some really great hockey while trying to carry the young Detroit Red Wings team on his back, they lost to the Anaheim Ducks Wednesday in overtime 3-2. Henrik Zetterberg had a pair of assists but still remains goalless in this series. The Wings now trail the Ducks in the series 3-2.
