Steelers select CB Terry Hawthorne in 5th round

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to add depth in their depleted secondary, selecting Illinois cornerback Terry Hawthorne in the fifth round of the NFL draft.

Hawthorne finished his college career with 162 tackles and six interceptions. Though the 6-foot Hawthorne is not considered a physical defender, he's one of the faster defensive backs in the draft. Hawthorne ran a 4.4-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine.

Hawthorne's health may be an issue. He was sent to the hospital with a concussion during a game against Wisconsin last year.

Hawthorne is the second defensive back taken by the Steelers in the draft. Pittsburgh took Syracuse safety Shamarko Thomas in the fourth round.

2013 NFL Draft: Pittsburgh Steelers Select Illinois CB Terry Hawthorne With No.150 Pick

With the 150th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select Illinois CB Terry Hawthorne… The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Hawthorne with their sixth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Hawthorne will add some depth at corner and help push Curtis Brown and DeMarcus Van **** for the fourth corner spot on the depth chart. The Steelers lost Keenan Allen in free agency and they were rumored to want to add some more depth at corner and this gives them just that. There have been some rumors about Curtis Brown’s ability to possibly move to safety. If he can make that switch Hawthorne gives them another young corner to replace Brown. However, with Brown’s early struggles at corner so far in his first few years this may be a pick to push him or move him out. Hopefully both players will step up and the Steelers will have a log jam of good corners because that would be a better problem than looking for more starting corners in a year or two.
Steelers 2013 Fifth Round Draft Pick – Illinois CB Terry Hawthorne

The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected Illinois cornerback Terry Hawthorne with their fifth round pick of the 2013 NFL draft.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/profiles/terry-hawthorne?id=2539238

OVERVIEW
Illinois’ talented defense has received well-deserved praise over the past couple of seasons, with defensive end Whitney Mercilus landing in the first round of the 2012 draft (after leading the nation in sacks) and multiple 2013 draft prospects littering the team’s front seven. But the surprising selection of safety Tavon Wilson in the second round by the Patriots and the obvious talents Read more [...]

Steelers Select Illinois CB Terry Hawthorne (Rd.5, No.150)

With the 150th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Steelers select Illinois CB Terry Hawthorne. At 6'0" and 194 lbs, Hawthorne has the long, linear fram that NFL teams are always looking for. Few tall cornerbacks possess the foot quickness, agility and playing speed that Hawthorne does. Blessed with quick feet and good agility, when he maintains good technique/footwork he has a quick and compact backpedal and can transition out of pedal to close quickly on passes in front of him. Naturally explosive, he flashes the closing burst to the receiver to get there in time to either make a play on the ball or to deliver a hard hit right as the ball arrives. He has the ball skills to break-up or intercept passes. Although his long stride hides his playing speed, he has consistently shown the speed to stay with fast receivers on deep routes.

St. Louis Rams: Complete 7-round, 2013 mock draft

Last night on The Cruddy Show, we broke down and simulated an entire St. Louis Rams mock for the 2013 NFL Draft, which is now just hours away. Myself, along with the four co-horts, had an in-depth, hour long conversation and went through each pick with changing scenarios to come to a consensus, hypothetical draft class for the Rams.

Many of my guys were taken in the Rams' mock draft we did on The Cruddy Show Tuesday evening, but not all of them were and feel, with the NFL Draft so close, that my own personal mock should be shared.

Here is what my picks looked like heading into Tuesday night's mock on The Cruddy Show, with complete rationales's for why each pick should be made by the Rams in this year's NFL Draft.

First round, No. 16 overall - Chance Warmack - Guard - Alabama

Tavon Austin would be the pick if he were to be available, but I don't believe there is any way possible he will be there, so, Warmack it is. I realize that Warmack is being taken in othe...

Illinois Fighting Illini football: Former players preparing for upcoming NFL Draft

Despite ending their first season 2-10 under first-year coach Tim Beckman, the Illinois Fighting Illini will still be well represented at the upcoming NFL Draft.

Offensive guard Hugh Thornton, defensive linemen Michael Buchanan and Akeem Spence, and cornerback Terry Hawthorne lead the group of former Illini players hoping to hear their names called at the draft, which will be conducted from April 25-27 at the Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Thornton is likely to be the first former Illini selected. The 6-foot-3, 330-pound guard is listed as the sixth best at his position by CBS Sports, which also believes he will go in either the third or fourth round. Thornton started 11 games, with 10 of them coming at left tackle. He named to the All-Big Ten second team by the coach and was an honorable mention by the media.

Buchanan, a 6-foot-6 defensive end, was a second-team All-Big Ten selection the last two seasons. He had a combined 121 tackles and 12 sacks, including 57 tackles and 4...

2013 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears Pick-by-Pick Predictions

Phil Emery is heading into his second year as general manager of the Chicago Bears and the only thing we know for certain about his plans for the Draft is that we know nothing. It’s certain that Emery passed on a lucrative career on the poker circuit to pursue a career in football. As he did last year, Emery struck quick when the free agent market opened.Within hours, tight end Martellus Bennett was signed to a four-year contract. Later that evening Emery raided the New Orleans Saints for veteran left tackle Jermon Bushrod, signing him to a five-year contract to finally put a seal on a position that has been as watertight as a sieve the past few seasons.Emery has spent the rest of his time prior to the Draft continuing to build depth on both offense and defense. Now he needs to continue strengthening the offensive line, particularly at guard and center. Also on offense, the Bears need a wide receiver with speed that can stretch an opponent’s secondary and create space for Brandon Mars...

Change ahead for Illinois, but how much unclear

Coming off a 2-10 season, there will be changes in Tim Beckman's second season as Illinois coach.

Spring practice starts Tuesday after an offseason of coaching turnover.

Beckman changed much of his staff, bringing in new offensive coordinator Bill Cubit and adding new assistants on both sides of the ball.

And Illinois will play without four of the most talented players off last season's team - defensive end Michael Buchanan, defensive back Terry Hawthorne, defensive tackle Akeem Spence and offensive lineman Hugh Thornton. All four are trying now to catch the eye of NFL teams ahead of the draft.

Beckman said Monday that he wasn't surprised by challenges his team faced last fall - depth key among them, he said.

''It's what I thought it was when I was getting in,'' said Beckman, who came from Toledo to replace Ron Zook. ''I knew it would be a challenge. ... I think we're moving forward.''

With Cubit in charge of the offense, change is likely there.

West rides TOs to 28-13 Shrine win

Collin Klein hoped to use the East-West Shrine Game as his first opportunity to prove he has the ability to play quarterback on the NFL level.

But the Heisman Trophy finalist and Kansas State star left the field with only more questions surrounding his game, and just a handful of months to provide potential suitors with the answers they're seeking.

Klein struggled in his first all-star game NFL audition, completing just 5 of 13 passes for 43 yards and an interception as his East team fell to the West 28-13 on Saturday.

Illinois cornerback Terry Hawthorne had a fumble recovery to set up a touchdown and an interception in the second half to lead a West team that came away with four total turnovers on the day.

Klein acknowledged he didn't have the kind of day he wanted, but said his confidence isn't shaken moving forward.

''I felt pretty good. We were a little rough, made a lot of mistakes and penalties that kept getting us in bad down-and-distances,'' Klein said. ''But I

West rides turnovers to 28-13 win in Shrine Game

Former Illinois cornerback Terry Hawthorne had a fumble recovery to set up a touchdown and an interception in the second half to help the West defeat the East 28-13 in the East-West Shrine Game on Saturday.

The West never trailed in the college showcase for NFL hopefuls and was sparked by a defense that had four turnovers, including an interception return for a score by former Kansas State cornerback Nigel Malone.

It also got a strong offensive effort from former Texas A&M running back Christine Michael, who rushed for 42 yards and touchdown.

Former Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein started for the East, but struggled. Trailed by questions about his throwing motion going in, he completed just 5 of 13 passes for 43 yards and an interception.

DD's Pigskin Preview: Purdue @ Illinois

Purdue (4-6, 1-5) at Illinois (2-8, 0-6) (Saturday, 3:30pm ET on BTN)
	Line: Purdue - 7
Last Meeting: 2011 (21-14 Purdue Win)

	3 Players to Watch:

	1) Terry Hawthorne (DB Illinois): It's Senior Day for the Illini and Hawthorne has been one of the brightest bright spots in an otherwise ugly season to say the least. He's got 3tfl's and 1 sack to go along with 6 pass break ups on the year. Against the spread attack of Purdue he needs to be the key cog in the backfield of the Illini defense or this team is going to go out losing every home Big Ten game of this season.

	2) Akeem Shavers (RB Purdue): Illinois isn't exactly great at any aspect of the game, but they are especially terrible against the run and the Boilermakers leading rusher needs to get going early to open other parts of the game up for Purdue. He's more than capable, averaging 4.6 yards a carry and has 4 rushing TD's on the season. If he can't get going early this team could be in trouble.

	3) Ryan Lankfo

Reviews bug, but bad calls are worse

Football is a fast-paced game. But sometimes it's worth delaying the action if it means getting the right call.

Replay officials were once again the focus on Saturday, with one clear example of how an official made the right call and another that deserved a second look.

Let's start with the good . . .

During the second quarter of the high-scoring West Virginia vs. Texas matchup shown on FOX (won by West Virginia, 48-45), Texas QB David Ash threw a completion to Marquise Goodwin for 8 yards before Goodwin was tackled. The football appeared to squirt out from the receiver's grip before going to the ground, but he was ruled down even though WVU's Isaiah Bruce jumped on the ball in the immediate continuing action after the ruling and claimed it his.

In football's dark ages, that would've been it -- an official calls it over and you move on. However, now we have the benefit of instant replay, and an alert replay official looked at the play and realized it was indeed a fumble with a clea
