No. 53 Toledo Rockets season preview: Toledo poised to challenge Northern Illinois

No. 53 Toledo Rockets (9-4) Coach Matt Campbell (second season, 10-4 at Toledo and overall)Returning Starters: 16, 9 offense, 4 defense, 3 special teamsRecruiting Rank: 70 Matt Campbell, who is just 33 years old, enjoyed success in his first season as a head coach. The former assistant at Toledo and Bowling Green was the youngest head coach in the country last year. He’s already coached in two bowl games, leading the Rockets to a victory over Air Force in his head coaching debut at the 2011 Military Bowl. The Rockets are poised to challenge Northern Illinois in the West. Should Toledo improve on its nine-win season from last year, expect Campbell to become the next hot coaching prospect for larger programs. The Rockets return enough experience to give the Huskies a run for their money atop the West. Toledo brings back 16 starters, including nine on offense and all three specialists. Including among those 16 returning starters are six players who earned All-MAC honors last season....

College Fantasy Football 2013: Players On The Verge

With many college fantasy drafts just about two months away and owners starting their draft prep, it seems like a great time to examine the players we think are on the doorstep to fantasy stardom in 2013. All of these players have attributes that have them appearing to be ready to be large fantasy contributors this fall, including talent, opportunity, offensive system, etc. There are many players who will emerge into top flight fantasy options this fall and nailing one or two of these guys can be the make or break of a fantasy season.Bryce Petty QB Baylor: It’s not often that a player with 14 career pass attempts would be on the verge of fantasy stardom, but that appears to be the case for Petty in 2013. He has all the physical tools to make plays with his arm and legs and has a fast and deep receiving corps at his disposal. The best thing that Petty has going for him is head coach Art Briles. Briles is a true offensive genius and has turned the Baylor offense into a fantasy utopia...

Toledo vs. Utah State: How Rockets Can Beat Aggies in 2012 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Courtesy: Toledo Athletics
The Rockets have been labeled as heavy underdogs due to their inability to stop a cold on defense, but we have seen hundreds of shootouts end up costing the favorites.
Utah State comes in as the WAC Champions with the much better team on paper, but that means jack squat once the game begins.
Terrance Owens and David Fluellen are quite the duo in the backfield, and as good as Utah State’s defense has been they clearly have not seen many offenses similar to Toledo’s.
While most are in love with Utah State’s defense like yours truly, they have had an overall issue with hanging onto the football.
They rank just 106th in turnover margin which is something the Rockets desperately need to use to their advantage. If not, they will allow a boatload of yards with their mediocre defense and the offense will have too much of the onus.
What they do have going for them is the ability to escape major pressure, but Terrance Owens needs to find Bernard Reedy early and ofte...

UC-Toledo a great under-the-radar matchup

TOLEDO, Ohio - The weekend's best college football game no one outside of Toledo or Cincinnati is talking about just might be Saturday night at the Glass Bowl.
The stakes are high but different for No. 21 Cincinnati and Toledo in a game both want badly, and not just for the attention the winner will earn. Cincinnati comes in at 5-0 and in a bit of a dangerous spot. The Bearcats play at unbeaten Louisville next Friday night in a game that could determine the Big East title and an eventual BCS bowl berth.
Toledo lost in overtime at Arizona in the season opener but hasn't lost since, putting up points by the boatload en route to a 6-1 start and bowl eligibility. Its biggest Mid-American Conference games are ahead, but the Rockets know they have a bigger stage than they usually get in October against an unbeaten BCS opponent.
Toledo is averaging 44 points per game over its last four games and scored 28 just in the third quarter of what became a too-close-for-comfort win over Eastern Michigan last weekend.

Toledo 38, Coastal Carolina 28

Terrance Owens passed for 290 yards and three touchdowns, and Toledo beat Coastal Carolina 38-28 Saturday night in nonconference play.

The Rockets (3-1) won their third straight after a season-opening 24-17 overtime loss at Arizona.

Owens completed 27 of 36 passes, including two to Cordale Scott for touchdowns. Owens' third TD pass was a 43-yarder to Bernard Reedy, one of Reedy's 10 receptions. Scott's second TD reception, a 7-yarder with 4:59 to play, clinched it for Toledo.

Rocket running back Cassius McDowell rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown.

For Coastal Carolina, now 2-2 after a 2-0 start, Aramis Hillary passed for 356 yards and three touchdowns but was sacked five times. Hillary hit Thomas Pauciello on a 25-yard touchdown pass, later DeMario Bennett for a 19-yard score and then Tyrell Blanks for a 17-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. But then Scott's second TD catch clinched it.

Owens making mark as Toledo's QB

Toledo has been a two-quarterback football program, one that features two quarterbacks on the cover of its media guide and lists co-starters at the game's most important position on its official depth chart.
The last two weeks, the Rockets have played one quarterback. That quarterback has played very well, and Toledo has improved to 2-1 on the year.
The hot hand of junior Terrance Owens has been enough for new head coach Matt Campbell to scrap the two-quarterback system, even if it's not official. Now, the challenge is for Owens to keep pushing the Rockets to a season all involved will remember.
Wins over Wyoming and Bowling Green have Toledo in position to compete for the MAC West title and match or surpass last year's nine-win season.
"We have very high expectations," Owens said. "That's no different if I'm playing one series a game or every series. This offense, it works and our success (from the past) proves it. For me it's just getting everybody involved and just do

Toledo 27, Bowling Green 15

Terrance Owens threw for 303 yards and a touchdown to lead Toledo past Bowling Green 27-15 in a Mid-American Conference game on Saturday.

Owens completed 20 of 28 passes without an interception.

Alonzo Russell caught six passes for Toledo (2-1, 1-0 Mid-American) for 156 yards, including a 66-yard reception to open the scoring, and David Fluellen ran for 81 yards and two TDs.

Toledo, which led 17-3 at the half, was far more efficient in the passing game, averaging 11.1 yards per reception to Bowling Green's 6.0, and the Falcons (1-2, 0-1)) sputtered on third down, converting only 4 of 13 attempts. Bowling Green was 1 for 3 on fourth down.

Anthon Samuel rushed 16 times for 112 yards and a touchdown for Bowling Green.

Toledo has won the past three games in the 77-game series between the teams.

Terrance Owens passed for 300 yards and four touchdowns, leading Toledo over Wyoming 34-31 Saturday.

David Fluellen added 109 yards rushing as the Rockets (1-1) amassed 504 yards of total offense in a game in which both teams drove up and down the field.

Toledo's defense, which ranked No. 3 in the nation in turnover margin in 2011, converted three Wyoming turnovers into 17 points. The Rockets' offense had no turnovers.

Wyoming (0-2) was led by Brett Smith, who passed for 339 yards and two touchdowns before he was injured during an 11-yard scramble with 6:22 left in the game and taken off the field on a stretcher. Smith appeared to be hit in the head out of bounds by one Toledo defender while another was pulling him down from behind.

Toledo’s quarterback (who doesn’t play baseball) was drafted by the Padres

Terrance Owens, the quarterback of the Toledo Rockets, got a surprise the other day. It turns out he was drafted in the last round of the MLB draft. The weird thing is that he doesn’t play baseball.
He was the 1,215 overall pick in the 40th round of the MLB draft. Owens isn’t planning on pursuing a Major League Baseball career and is returning to Toledo to continue being a quarterback. Owens played some little league baseball but by no means is he considered a two league sport athlete. Apparently the Padres wanted to make Terrance Owens a left handed pitcher.
Like Graham Watson pointed out, no wonder the Padres are in last place.

Toledo 45, Ball St. 28

Terrance Owens threw four touchdown passes, Adonis Thomas ran for 141 yards and a score, and Toledo rolled past Ball State 45-28 Friday in both teams' regular-season finale.

Thomas opened the scoring with a 4-yard run in the first quarter before Owens found Morgan Williams, Bernard Reedy, Cassius McDowell and Eric Page for scores. Owens finished with 267 yards passing, 145 of them to Page, for the Rockets (8-4, 7-1 Mid-American).

Keith Wenning threw for 308 yards and touchdowns to Torieal Gibson and Zane Fakes for the Cardinals (6-6, 4-4), but one of his two interceptions was returned 58 yards for a score by J. Robinson.

Jahwan Edwards and Dwayne Donnigan added rushing touchdowns for Ball State.

Despite the win, Toledo missed out on a MAC Championship Game berth when Northern Illinois beat Eastern Michigan. The Rockets will likely play in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl Dec. 27 in Detroit.

Adonis Thomas rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns and Terrance Owens passed for two scores as Toledo kept its Mid-American Conference title hope alive with a 44-17 victory against Central Michigan on Friday night.

Both of Owens' TD passes came in the second half as the Rockets (7-4, 6-1) broke the game open. Toledo sits atop the MAC West Division with Northern Illinois, but the Huskies own the tiebreaker thanks to their 66-63 win when the teams met on Nov. 1.

Next week, Toledo visits Ball State, needing a win and a Northern Illinois loss at home gainst Eastern Michigan to advance to the conference title game.

Ryan Radcliff was 20 of 37 passing for 233 yards and two touchdowns for the Chippewas (3-9, 2-6).

The Rockets led 14-10 in the second quarter before Jeremiah Detmer padded the lead with two field goals before halftime. Owens threw 39 yards to James Green for a TD early in the third quarter, and his 51-yard scoring toss to Bernard Reedy in the fourth quarter made the score 37-10.
