Diamondbacks beat Dodgers 8-6 in 12 innings

Put the Arizona Diamondbacks in Dodger Stadium, throw in extra innings, and they're tough to beat.

Martin Prado had two RBIs, including a run-scoring double during a four-run 12th inning, to help the D-backs win 8-6 on Wednesday night.

The first-place D-backs improved to 8-2 in extra innings - 6-1 on the road - this season, and are 17-7 at Dodger Stadium since 2011, the best record among NL West opponents. They clinched their fourth consecutive series win over the Dodgers.

''It means a lot because they tied it up and we just kept plugging along,'' said reliever Heath Bell, who gave up a leadoff home run to Ramon Hernandez in the bottom of the 12th.

There was no repeat of the brawl that occurred in the seventh inning of the Dodgers' 5-3 victory a night earlier, when six players and coaches were ejected. No batters were hit by pitches this time.

Before the game, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly talked with D-backs manager Kirk Gibson, who got tossed after the two former stars were amon

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Martin Prado had two RBIs, including a run-scoring double during a four-run 12th inning, to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-6 on Wednesday night.

There was no repeat of the brawl that occurred in the seventh inning of the Dodgers' 5-3 victory a night earlier, when six players and coaches were ejected. No batters were hit by pitches this time.

Prado put the Diamondbacks ahead 5-4 with a ground-rule double to left field off Ronald Belisario (3-5), who was charged with four runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning. He walked two and didn't retire any of the four batters he faced in the 12th.

Arizona made it 6-4 on Cliff Pennington's bases-loaded RBI single off Brandon League, the Dodgers' seventh pitcher. League gave up four runs over two-thirds of an inning in Los Angeles' 5-1 loss in the series opener Monday.

Gerardo Parra added a two-run single to center.

The start of something big for Montero, Prado?

PHOENIX -- The only team in the major leagues not to be shut out this season, the Diamondbacks waited until the seventh inning to extend that streak in a 5-2 victory over the Padres on Friday.

The way it unfolded, it was worth the wait.

Miguel Montero opened the five-run seventh inning with a double, and he scored one pitch later when Martin Prado grounded a doubled inside the bag at first base to tie the score at 1-all, igniting a rally that included a run-scoring hits by Wil Nieves and A.J. Pollock and a two-run double by Paul Goldschmidt.

That Montero and Prado had a lot to do with turning the game around was perhaps the most promising development in a night that also included another quality start by Brandon McCarthy and Heath Bells seventh save as the D-backs (27-21) remained in a tie for first place with the Rockies in the NL West.

We had contributions from a lot of guys, manager Kirk Gibson said.

And if this is the game that kick-starts Montero and to a lesser extent Prado, all the better.

Justin Upton's latest homer prompts tweet of the week

The Arizona Diamondbacks wanted to get rid of Justin Upton in the worst way. He simply did not fit into Kirk Gibson and the front office's philosophy of gritty guys digging deep for wins. The Diamondbacks wanted gamers. They wanted guys with dirty uniforms and so on and so forth. We can all make fun of those ideals if we want. Most of us know that it is talent and performance that wins, not ideals or scrap or grit or whatever it is you want to call it.

The Atlanta Braves have to be thrilled about the Diamondbacks strategy. Upton has been a monster for them. He has helped make them now the team to beat in the NL East.

So that brings us to this tweet by Jonathan Bernhardt. It was truly an epic tweet and sums it up for most of us rational thinkers about baseball, but only in a dead-on, dripping with sarcasm way that most of us do not have enough grit or scrap or whatever to come up with something as perfect as this:

Justin Upton's hit 8 home runs? I'm not impressed. ...

D-backs have high praise for 'self-made' Prado

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- At 13, Martin Prado saw what Venezuelan youth league teammates Miguel Cabrera and Francisco Rodriguez could do and wondered if he fit the sport. If he would ever fit. Now, Prado finds himself compared to hitters such as Edgar Martinez and Placido Polanco.

Dedication and a singleness of purpose can cover a lot of ground.

I never thought from that group I would be at this level, Prado said. I wasnt that talented. I couldnt complain. How was I supposed to play here? But everybody went in a different direction, and I just kept going. I didnt want to change my path. I didnt look back. I didnt turn a different direction. I just kept straight and worked hard.

I guess it paid off.

No guesswork required. Prados four .300 seasons in the last five years testify to that, and his new Diamondbacks teammates know what they have, too, as Prado prepares to join then-teenage teammate Cabrera to represent Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.

Prado was the lower-profile return when high-profile ri

Diamondbacks sign Martin Prado to four-year extension

The Arizona Diamondbacks inked newly-acquired third baseman Martin Prado to a four-year contract extension that will pay the former Brave $40 million and keep him in the deser until 2016. He'll make $7 million in 2013 to avoid arbitration, and $11 million in each season from 2014 to 2016.

The contract actually seems like a solid value for the Diamondbacks, who really haven't had a long-term, consistent, bulletproof third baseman in their franchise's history, aside from an aging Matt Williams or the strikeout-prone Mark Reynolds. The 29-year old Prado accumulated 5.9 fWAR for the Braves last year as their every day left fielder, but a majority of his value came from his stellar defense. While his defense at third isn't historically as good as it was in left last year, it's still above average, meaning that four wins per year over the life of the contract seems like something that should be relatively easily attainable.

Prado might have been able to get a b...

Prado's position with Braves is unpredictable

Some guys have to look at the lineup every day to see whether they're playing. Atlanta Braves infielder-outfielder Martin Prado has to look at it to see which position he's playing. It could be anywhere except pitcher or catcher. There aren't many weeks like the one he had from Aug. 23 to Aug. 29, when he started at five positions: left field, first base, second base, third base and shortstop. But even when he starts at the same position for consecutive games, he might move somewhere else after the seventh inning. He keeps several gloves handy in the dugout just in case. For the first half of the season, as he shuttled between left field and backing up third baseman Chipper Jones when Jones' knees wouldn't let him start, Prado said he didn't care where he played as long as he batted second in the order. Hitting in the same spot every day was his anchor. Recently, manager Fredi Gonzalez has slotted him sixth in the order, hoping his consistent bat can le...
