Youkilis sent to an eye specialist

After getting hit in the eye with a baseball between innings during last night's game, Kevin Youkilis underwent some tests and they all came back negative for fractures and anything too serious.

Unfortunately his eye was still watering and swollen when he got to Fenway today so the team has sent him to an eye specialist to get it checked out. He won't be starting in tonight's game and probably won't be available to pinch-hit either. Moss will take his place in the lineup and with Sean Casey in the middle of serving his suspension, Alex Cora will serve as the emergency backup if something happens.

Sean Casey drops his suspension appeal

This post is actually from yesterday morning but I forgot to submit it to YB.
--
Sean Casey has officially dropped his suspension appeal and will begin serving his 3 games tonight against the Diamondbacks. I'm not entirely sure of the strategy behind this.

The Diamondbacks will be starting two lefties in this series. The Astros, who we play next, only have 1 left-handed starter. It would make sense for me to have Casey around for this series and then start his suspension in Houston.

The only thing I can think of is that they want him available as a pinch-hitter in an NL park where there is no DH and the entire roster will likely be used.

In the meantime, Kevin Youkilis will make all of the starts at first and Brandon Moss will be the backup. Moss was converted from an OF to a 1B in Pawtucket earlier this year so he's had some experience at the position.

Kevin Youkilis gets hit in the face with a baseball

Kevin Youkilis was hit in the face by a bouncing warm up throw from Mike Lowell before the 5th inning in last night's game. I was at the park and a hush came over the crowd as they immediately thought the worst (the irony is that right before it happened, they played a Tony Conigliaro tribute video at Fenway.) His eye kept getting more swollen with every second that passed so Francona took him out and replaced him at first-base with Brandon Moss.

Luckily they ran a CT scan on his face and it came back negative. If the swelling goes down then he should be a go for tonight's game. If not, then Brandon Moss will more than likely get the start because Sean Casey is still serving his suspension.

LAROCHE: THE BEST?

Pirates first baseman Adam LaRoche is currently hitting .221 with six homers. On this date last year, he was hitting .211 with seven homers. In Atlanta in 2006, those numbers were .247 and 10, and in 2005, .249 and seven.

So the Pirates acquired this traditional late-bloomer before the 2007 campaign, and his early-season numbers since joining the Buccos have tailed off even below their previous depths. Although some would question the acquisition of such a player by a team that usually holds an annual fire sale in July, we've all learned to never question the wisdom of Dave Littlefield.

With that in mind, a Pirate fan created this incredible YouTube montage of The LaRoche Era, set to LaRoche's own at-bat theme song, "Karate Kid's" You're the Best. For any Pirate follower, it's a must-see.

With that as a backdrop, has anyone else realized that during the Pirates' decade-and-a-half of futility, the first base position has been manned by the revolving door of Sean Casey, Daryle Ward, Randall Simon, Kevin Young, Mark Johnson, and Brian Hunter? That might have something to do with the losing. Of course, pretty much every other position has the same situation, so my point is moot.

Julian Tavarez gets designated for assignment

I never thought I'd see this day come. Julian Tavarez has never been a great pitcher in Boston but he ate innings and was a good guy to keep around the clubhouse. Now I'm not saying I wanted him on the team but it looked like Theo Epstein sure did.

Tavarez has been designated for assignment today to make room on the active roster for Sean Casey. Most people, myself included, thought Craig Hansen would be sent back down to Pawtucket; however, after the trade talks to send Tavarez to Colorado died this weekend, they changed their philosophy and just cut him instead.

For the second game in a row the Red Sox come from behind to beat Texas

Last night it was Manny Ramirez who came through in the eighth to win the game for the Red Sox. He was thrown out of this game early on for arguing a called strike. Today it took 4 hits in a row to tie and three walks in a row to win it.

How smart is the Yard?

While the idea of community projections has existed in blog circles for a while, I haven't seen any real good breakdown as to if those projections were more accurate in aggregate vs. any single individual or experts predictions.
So here is what I propose to you today; let's find out.
All you have to do is click on the links below to fill out a form for each player asking for predictions for the following statistics; AVG, OBP, SLG, HR, RBI, SB and for pitchers - Wins, Losses, ERA, Strike Outs/9 IP, IP, and Saves.
If you would like to provide your name or MVN "handle", it will only be used to call out how correct, or incorrect you are at the end of the season. If you would rather not provide any information linking yourself to your predictions and providing a layer of plausible deniability, feel free to leave it blank.
Lastly, please provide the team you root for on a regular basis. Could it be that the collective intelligence of Yankee fans about Red Sox players is more accurate than the fans that live and die all things Sox? We will hopefully find out.

Follow the story link to participate...

1B Sean Casey: Is He For Real?

Going into his 11th year in MLB, "the Mayor", as he is called by some fans, has done the unthinkable in the mind of today's modern athlete. He has opted to take a lesser role to play on a winning team in contention for another World Series title (it would be their second in a row and their 3rd since 2004). He admittedly had offers on the table as a starting First baseman for a handful of teams, but in the end, he choose a one year contract for less money for the opportunity to play in Boston.

Casey vs. Carter vs. Bates

The Red Sox recently signed Sean Casey to be the teams back up first baseman. The question is whether the Red Sox could have done better with in-house options? The short of the matter is probably. The long of the matter starts here.
