Building A Cubs Champion: 2010 Edition

Like it or not, one of the keys to the Cubs' success in 2010 is a resurgence by Alfonso Soriano. Here, he launches his game-winning grand slam vs. the Astros last July 27.

Last year about this time, I made this post discussing what I thought should be the makeup of the 2009 Cubs.

Theriot had a lot of value after 2007?

I don’t know why I do this to myself. I generally try to avoid doing this, but I accidentally read a comment written by Chuck as I was reading through ccd’s site. Early in the comments it’s suggested that Hendry should trade Ryan Theriot this winter. Chuck responds by saying something as silly as he usually does:

Theriot would have brought a lot in return in the winter of 2007. No longer. Another Hendry protege held too long.

How would Theriot have brought anything af...

Can’t Vote For Theriot in Cubs All-Time 9

If you’re anything like me you rarely go to cubs.com. This little all-time 9 thing could have been up for awhile or it could have been put up today. I have no idea, but I couldn’t help but notice how useless it was. I mean, they don’t have Ryan Theriot’s 2007 season included. His 2008 one isn’t either. Neither is the 2009 season. I would have voted for any one of those as they are easily the 3 best seasons by a Cubs shortstop in the history of ever.

This is funny:

‘We’ve been doing things [in the clubhouse] the last two weeks of the season that we hadn’t done all year, that we did last year and the year before last,’’ shortstop Ryan Theriot said. ‘‘It’s definitely a different feel. I don’t know why that is. I’m not going to sit here and say it’s one person’s fault. But you start to look at it, and it’s kind of like, ‘Maybe.’ I don’t know.&#...

Wasn’t Bob Brenly A Catcher?

Ryan Theriot was knocked down by a high and inside pitch in last night’s Cubs/Pirates game. It was the typical up and in pitch. It wasn’t really that close to hitting Theriot, but when you see a pitch coming anywhere near your head you tend to get out of the way as best as possible. I don’t remember who was pitching for the Pirates. Ramon Vazquez?

Anyway, the next pitch was low and outside, which prompted Brenly to say, “I’d guess 90% of the time the nex...

During a recent game, pmayo noticed Ryan Theriot had learned to turn on the inside pitch, and opponents were paying the price. After running the numbers, I had confirmed* it.*I realize batted ball direction matters, so that's an overstated conclusionBy cutting all pitches seen by Theriot by "slice", you can see the changes from year-to-year.
Hit a Home Run, Get Accused of Taking Steroids

If you’d like to know why steroids make a great story, ask the Chicago newspapers this week. They’ve taken one tiny insinuation made completely tongue-in-cheek by one columnist and turned it a tempest in a Theriot-sized teapot. That Theriot would be petite Ryan Theriot, female fan favorite and infielder for the Chicago Cubs.

False hustle

Finally! Somebody in the organization says it. Ryan Theriot needlessly diving around the field isn’t hustling. Alan Trammel called it false hustle. To Theriot’s credit, he’s stayed on his feet much better this year. As a result, and this is no surprise, he’s actually made a few plays in the hole. Who knew if you stayed on your feet you could make more plays? His diving around the infield has always irritated me. Theriot knows he’s not going to convert 9...

Projecting the 2009 Cubs: the final one

For these team projections I've used the playing time projections that we put together. The statistics for the hitters are from the 2009 Shawon's, which are based on the following projections: Marcel, Chone, PECOTA, and ZiPS. The pitching stats (FIP) are the average of those same 4 projection systems. The defense for most of the players was a 3-year weighted UZR average if possible and for others I explained on their individual player projection. The baserunning numbers are the aver...

Sexy Pick Alert: Ryan Theriot

Due to the Cubs lack of offensive prowess, Uncle Lou Pinella has decided to give utility infielder Ryan Theriot a shot at the everyday shortstop position. Former starter Caesar Izturis just hasn't been getting the job done at the plate as indicated by his .184 batting average. Fantasy baseballers and Cub fans alike have been intrigued by Ryan "The Riot" Theriot (pronounced Terry-o) due to his ability to swipe bags and get on base.

The GNUru tells you what to expect from Theriot from a fantasy baseball perspective.
