The Backstop Boys

Four wins out of five = a really nice night for the farm teams. The offense was especially impressive - as were the performances from two catchers.
Las Vegas 7 Portland 2The offense was working again Friday night and JP Arencibia led the way with two homers and six RBI. The catcher has had a disappointing season, but he's ending the year strong with a .302 average in the last 10 games, as well as six homers and 14 RBI. He's even taken two walks! Howie Clark also had two hits along wit...

32-14

That is the combined score of the games last night (not in the Jays' affiliates' favour), as they combined to go an opposite of perfect 0-5.
Fresno 10 at Las Vegas 4When your bullpen pitches 5 shutout innings, that's a good sign. But it's also a bad sign, because it means your starter only managed 4 innings, and in this case they were 4 pretty terrible innings: Randy Boone allowed all 10 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks. Jason Lane did his best to lead the 51s on a comeback with 2 s...

The Farm Takes an 0-Fer

The Jays' affiliates need help! Too bad they won't be getting it from three of their top 4 picks, as James Paxton, Jake Eliopolous, and Jake Barrett failed to sign on draft deadline day.
Albuquerque 4 at Las Vegas 3Fabio Castro pitched well, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Unfortunately, the bullpen couldn't hold Albuquerque at bay, and the 51s lost a squeaker, 4-3. Kevin Howard singled, homered and walked, while Angel Sanchez, Howie Clark and Buck Coats each reached base twice.New ...

The affiliates went 3-for-4 on the night, which wasn't too bad considering how they've performed on Friday nights in previous weeks. Both New Hampshire (!) and Dunedin had nice offensive outbursts.
Reno 3 Las Vegas 1Fabio Castro continues to pitch through a rough period. The diminutive lefty allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks in 4.2 innings of work. He struck out two batters. TJ Beam, who is pitching well, worked a scoreless 1.1 innings. Bubbie Buzachero had a nice outing...

Human Headline Strikes Again

If Alex Rodriguez was looking to distract attention from his personal life, it seems he succeeded in Toronto at least.

With the Yankees holding an 8-5 advantage in the top of the ninth last night, Jorge Posada hit a routine pop-up to Jays third baseman Howie Clark that would've ended the inning. But with the ball in the air and A-Rod on the base paths, the Yankees slugger yelled something toward the Toronto infielders that prompted Clark to back off at the last second with the expectation that shortstop John McDonald had called the ball.

Rodriguez maintains that he simply yelled out, "Hah!" The Jays claim that A-Rod yelled out "Mine!" Either way, the ball dropped for an RBI single and the Yanks won the game 10-5, ending their five-game losing streak.

Not surprisingly, the Blue Jays were incensed, and McDonald had to be separated from A-Rod by the umpire. Afterwards, Rodriguez could be seen standing on third with a smirk.
