Mariners' Franklin Gutierrez could go on rehab assignment Thursday or Friday

Franklin Gutierrez had an injury-plagued 2012 season. However, he recovered from his injuries and put up big numbers while playing winter ball. His confidence and excitement level were high coming into this season. Unfortunately, after a slow start, he suffered a hamstring strain and landed on the disabled list. However, he is getting better and could start a rehab assignment soon says Greg Johns of MLB.com.

Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) ran well in Seattle today and could go out on rehab assignment as early as tomorrow or Friday.
— Greg Johns (@GregJohnsMLB) May 15, 2013

Gutierrez suffered the injury in late April and was expected to miss three weeks. If he goes out on a rehab assignment like planned, that estimate may turn out to be pretty accurate. Generally, players will play a couple rehab games before rejoining their team.

The Mariners could certainly use Gutierrez's defense. He is an above-average outfielder who won the Gold Glove in 2010. He could wi...

Seattle Mariners Recall Carlos Peguero, Disable Franklin Gutierrez

MLB News: The Seattle Mariners recalled outfielder Carlos Peguero from Triple-A Tacoma to take the roster spot of outfielder Franklin Gutierrez who was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right hamstring. Peguero should see a good portion of time while Gutierrez heals. He will most likely be out for three-four weeks.
Fantasy Ramifications: While not a stud by any means, Gutierrez is a competent fantasy outfielder. He should return back to full strength with the bat once he heals, but playing center field, having a strained hamstring is a tough injury to recover from. Needing to accelerate and cover much of the outfield, the risk of reinjury is there. Peguero holds no fantasy value.

Gutierrez put on DL with hamstring injury

The Seattle Mariners have placed outfielder Franklin Gutierrez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

Gutierrez was injured on Monday night trying to make a diving catch in the fourth inning against the Astros. He has struggled with injuries in his career, and this is the fifth time he's been on the disabled list since the beginning of the 2011 season.

Gutierrez is hitting .259 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 16 games this season.

Outfielder Carlos Peguero was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to take his spot on the roster. Peguero has hit .246 with two home runs and 14 RBIs in 17 games for Tacoma this season.

Gutierrez's health is a big key for Mariners

The Seattle Mariners went out of their way to bring in outfield help this winter. Mike Morse can play there. Jason Bay and Raul Ibanez have spent their careers in the outfield. But if the Mariners are going to have a good 2013 season, it will almost certainly mean that Seattle has seen a return to form by center fielder Franklin Gutierrez. He has missed huge patches of time due to illness and injury, but he seems to be closer to the healthy player he was in 2009, his first in Seattle, when he seemed on his way to becoming a star. He played a month in winter ball this offseason and came to FanFest the final weekend of January feeling good about his future in Seattle. "That was my offseason, just to play winter ball for about a month," Gutierrez said. "And I did pretty good. I just went to gain my confidence back and prove I can play almost every day again. So I'm very happy for that. Now I'm feeling good and getting ready to get to spring training and...

Mariners' Franklin Gutierrez Had a Huge Winter After Injury-Plagued Season

Franklin Gutierrez used the Winter as a time to get more baseball in. Considering he missed much of the 2012 season with injuries, that was probably a good idea. Considering how well he played, it was probably a great idea. The Seattle Mariners could use a rejuvenated Gutierrez heading into next season.

According to Greg Johns of MLB.com, Gutierrez hit .349 in the Venezuelan Winter League with 13 runs, six doubles, and 19 RBI. He played 22 games with the Leones del Caracas. The showing in Venezuela has the Mariners excited for Gutierrez's potential in 2013 says Johns.

Gutierrez played in just 40 games for the Mariners in 2012. In that time, he hit just .260/.309/.420. Gutierrez has spent the last four seasons in Seattle, and last year was the fewest games he had ever played for them. He had never played fewer than 92 games in a season aside from his rookie campaign. In his career, Gutierrez is a .256/.308/.384 hitter.

In 2012, Gutierrez suffered a slew of...

Seattle Mariners’ Franklin Gutierrez Making Up For Lost Time

Coming into the 2012 season, the Seattle Mariners were planning to lean on Franklin Gutierrez on and off the field. He was penciled in as the starting center fielder and was going to bat in the middle of a young Mariners line-up. Gutierrez was going to be the veteran position player in a young line-up full of rookies and second year players.
Gutierrez’s career with the Seattle Mariners has had few ups and more downs. In 2010, he’d a career year at the plate and in the field. The 6’2 Venezuelan won a gold glove back in 2010 when he was aptly nicknamed Death to Flying Things by former Mariners announcer, the late great Dave Neihaus. Last season, he was poised to take the next step and become an elite outfielder before he was sidelined by a stomach ailment that caused him to play in just 91 games and was a shadow of his former self when he returned.

Coming into the 2012 season, Gutierrez entered spring training with 20 lbs. of added muscle and was poised to have a bounce-back yea...

Seattle's Gutierrez leaves after being hit in face

Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez left Thursday night's game against Boston after an errant pick-off attempt hit him on the right side of his face.

Gutierrez led off the fourth inning with Seattle's first hit off Boston starter Franklin Morales. Gutierrez took his lead at first and Morales attempted a pickoff. His throw over to first was slightly into the runner, tipped off the end of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez's glove and hit Gutierrez near his right ear - where his helmet doesn't have an ear flap.

Gutierrez immediately fell to the ground and was face down for several minutes before being helped back to the clubhouse. He was replaced by Michael Saunders.

Gutierrez has already missed most of this season with chest and foot injuries.

My oh My! Top play of the week for the Seattle Mariners (video)

Good first night back for Gutierrez
As mentioned in a piece I did last week titled A sight for sore eyes in center field for the Seattle Mariners, Franklin Gutierrez is back!
Hopefully this move sparks the Mariners into a early summer win streak. They sure could use one moving into the second week of inter-league play.
Gutierrez reached base three times in his first game of the season, including an RBI single in the 8th to score Justin Smoak. This is nothing more than a feel good play of the week, as the play had no effect whatsoever on the game.
The pitch
With a 3-1 hitters count, and runners at the corners, Franklin Gutierrez kept his head down on the fast ball and laced it into the hole at short stop.
As the video shows the slo-mo replay, it looks like Guti hasn’t missed a beat from the reliable hitter we saw a few seasons back. Hopefully he is ready to get back to playing ball full time for the Mariners, and leave the past year and a half behind him for good.

A sight for sore eyes in center field for the Seattle Mariners

Welcome back Franklin Gutierrez
For pretty much the last year and a half (season wise) the Seattle Mariners have been without their Gold Glove winning center fielder.
With a strange abdominal injury last year, and with more fluke injuries this spring, Franklin Gutierrez has been the ghost of center field’s past at Safeco Field.
That all came to an end Thursday night, as the anchor of the Mariners outfield returned!
What this means to the Mariners
With Mike Carp being placed on the 15 day DL on Wednesday, and with the subsequent call up of Casper Wells retroactive to Carp’s injury, this gives the Mariners speed, finesse, and superb defense moving forward with their outfield now.
With the likes of Casper Wells, Gutierrez, Ichiro, Michael Saunders, and Chone Figgins at the disposal to fill any of the three outfield spots, Seattle definitely has the best outfield in the AL West now.
But, the problem for the M’s has never really been their defense, it’s been their bats.
So if Gutierrez can’

Injured Seattle CF Gutierrez progressing in rehab

Franklin Gutierrez has taken his first steps in coming back from a problematic foot injury that came when the Seattle Mariners center fielder was trying to recover from a strained pectoral muscle.

Gutierrez took batting practice before Tuesday's game against Texas and is expected to test the plantar fasciitis in his foot by doing running and agility drills on Wednesday. Gutierrez has been back in Seattle getting treatment on his foot for a couple of weeks but the hitting and running marks a step ahead for the oft-injured outfielder.

Gutierrez started the season on the disabled list after suffered a strained pectoral during spring training. He was doing conditioning and about to head out on a rehab assignment when the foot problem emerged.

Gutierrez has torn pectoral muscle

Seattle Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez has a partially torn right pectoral muscle that will sideline him for around four weeks.

Gutierrez’s injury has escalated to what Manager Eric Wedge has described as “Considerable Concern”.

As we said on the blog on Wednesday Gutierrez, 29, left the team's spring training site in Arizona to have an MRI in Seattle.

The injury does not require surgery and the Mariners expect him to begin baseball activities in approximately four weeks.

He will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis after that.

Mariners escalate response to Gutierrez pectoral injury.

M’s Injury Update
Yesterday we brought you the news out of Seattle Mariners spring training on the Gutierrez pectoral issue.
Today Franklin Gutierrez’s injury has escalated to what Manager Eric Wedge has described as “Considerable Concern” and has been flown to Seattle for more extensive examinations with the team doctors.
When throwing a ball from centerfield to third base, before an intersquad game, it was evident that Gutierrez did not have normal throwing strength.
After a second throw he was ushered off the field and taken away to have an MRI.

The M’s organization has been quiet on the results of the test but has obviously felt the need to escalate their response in sending him back to the Northwest.
A pectoral injury is not completely unheard of in baseball, but it is rare. What was being reported prior to this event was the considerable muscle weight that the Mariners centerfielder gained during the offseason.
This injury may be a result of the very training he was doing to improve.
