Agenda #1: Who to Re-Sign?

Per Florio, the current crop of Bears free agents:Chicago Bears: (restricted) DE Mark Anderson, S Josh Bullocks, DT Dusty Dvoracek, S Danieal Manning, LB Nick Roach, LB Jamar Williams; (unrestricted) LB Darrell McClover, DE Adewale Ogunleye, RB Adrian Peterson, LB Pisa Tinoisamoa. So who does Jerry re-sign? I think Pisa, Jamar and Roach should all come back to provide linebacker depth moving forward. I have no interest in Mark Anderson or Adewale Ogunleye. Dusty and Bullocks are gone.As for Danieal Manning and Adrian Peterson? I'm letting them both walk. The Bears must move Hester back to kick returns and have Knox for the insurance policy there. AP's fate must have been sealed by Khalil Bell's late-season performance.

Help available for D-line

There is a good chance that Adewale Ogunleye, the Bears’ starting left end for the past six years, will depart via free agency.
That expected void might have been filled in-house by former first-round pick Gaines Adams, but his unexpected death leaves the Bears in a predicament. Restricted free agent Mark Anderson was a flop when he was handed the starting job at right end in 2007, and he has just 9 ½ sacks in the three seasons since his 12-sack rookie season in 2006.

Mark Anderson? Really?I'm not going to read any column that begins "If Mark Anderson wants to be a part of the Bears' future, he can make a strong case over the last two games." Mark Anderson has seen more than enough snaps over the past few seasons to make it very clear that he is not a viable starting defensive end in the league. If we're going to reach for reasons to care about Monday night's game, Mark Anderson is not going to be it.The Favre-to-Minnesota Timeline - According to Reports Childress woos Favre. Childress chauffeurs Favre to team facility. Favre plays brilliantly inside the system, thriving behind the brilliant run game. Favre beats San Francisco on a last-second heave. Favre begins audibling out of called runs. Childress starts getting mad. Favre tries to throw a late touchdown pass to run up the score against the Packers. Childress gets really mad. Favre, being a weathered old man, begins slipping physically. Favre's touchdown-to-interception ration begins to flip. The run game and offensive line start slipping. Childress getting reallllllly mad. The Vikings lose two out of three, both in primetime. Childress tries to take Favre out of the Panthers game. Favre refuses. Steam begins pouring out of Childress' ears. Favre calls out coach to the media. Childress handles it really well while clearly simmering. The question is, what's next? A disastrous performance Monday night could go a long way toward sinking the Viking season. Do the Bears have it in them? The Outdated Cover-2Mike Mulligan questions whether the Cover-2 is outdated in the Sun-Times, drawing some interesting commentary from Alex Brown. The problem with the Cover-2 is not the system itself but Lovie Smith's failure to adapt it as the game changes around him. He plays soft corners on third-and-seven, basically granting offenses first downs. He uses the same series of predictable blitz packages on the same predictable downs. But the main problem with the Bears' pass defense is the complete lack of a pass rush. The Cover-2 has never been successful without a premier pass rusher on the roster, preferably two. The Bears have none. Alex Brown is a hell of a defensive end, and I'd love him to play here til his career's over, but he's not a premier pass rusher.Chicago UpdateThe Reverend and I will be at Rossi's on North State at 3:00 for the Broncos v. Eagles game. Stop by and have a beer. We're not leaving until they ask us to.

Meet the media

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Even though new Bears defensive end Gaines Adams accompanied the team to Atlanta, he met with the local media for the first time Monday at Halas Hall. "I was totally caught off guard," Adams said. "I didn't know I was going to get traded, but things happen in the league and you have to roll with it." Almost every NFL player understands this is a business, so there really shouldn't be any hard feelings toward Adams from other members of the defensive line. Still, with Adewale Ogunleye and Mark Anderson both in contract years, it may be a little awkward for Adams initially. How do you make friends in that meeting room? "I would say going out and practicing hard is the first thing," Adams said. "Just earning their respect, and not coming in trying to step on anybody's toes. Just trying to come in and work hard, earn the respect of those guys and go from there." Three days on the team and he's already picked up Lovie Smith's patented catch phrase: "and go from there". If Adams learns the defense just as quickly, maybe the Bears got themselves a steal.

On the mark

CHICAGO -- October 1, 2006 was a memorable date for Chicago Bears defensive end Mark Anderson.

Before a nationally televised audience, Anderson -- as a rookie -- sparked the Bears defense with two sacks in a 37-6 victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Soldier Field.

Could Anderson be in line for another big performance this weekend versus the Seahawks?

Starting left tackle Sean Locklear has officially been ruled out with a high ankle sprain, so it appears Walter Jones may make his season debut. Considered one of the greatest left tackles to ever play the game, Jones, 35, has undergone two knee surgeries in the past year. One of Anderson's strengths has always been his speed, so he might match up well against the still recovering Jones.

"He's a veteran, a great guy, kind of like [Orlando] Pace," said Anderson. "Both of them are well experienced and they know what they are doing. [Jones] is smart, so you have to be on your 'A' game when playing veteran guys like that. That offensive line looks pretty athletic. They run the ball well, and are pretty good protecting the passer."

Most feel Seattle's passer this weekend will be Seneca Wallace -- although Jim Mora Jr. is calling Matt Hasselbeck a game-time decision. If Wallace starts as many expect, he presents a whole new set of problems for Anderson and the Bears' defensive line.

"We got to set up containment on the outside," said Anderson. "He likes to bounce out and try to make something happen down the field with the receivers. We got to make sure we contain him, and make sure we keep four guys on him at all times."
