If Everyday People were Pro Athletes: My girl LaVar

"If Everyday People were Pro Athletes" is a feature I'll be running every Tuesday, from now until I run out of bloggers, celebrities, friends and family members to offend and/or alienate myself from. Hopefully, most of the people I know will continue to act like blogs don't exist. Furthermore, if any of these people do have blogs, then they will probably come back and embarrass me way more than I can them.

Linebacker LaVar Arrington was involved in a motorcycle accident in suburban Washington, DC, on Monday afternoon. WUSA-TV in Washington is reporting Arrington, released from the Giants after last season, lost control of the vehicle. When will these athletes learn?

The Top 50 NFL Free Agents

A pretty solid list, but as the writer puts it, this group is "thinner than Nicole Ritchie." Scarcity leads to average guys getting big contracts. Who will be the NFL's Gil Meche?

Arrington, 2 Others Released By Giants

Wow, what has happened to LaVar Arrington? 2 years ago, he was considered a top linebacker. Now he's been cut twice the past 2 offseasons.

The New York Giants released linebacker LaVar Arrington and two other starters Monday in the first major shake-up under new general manager Jerry Reese.

New York also cut linebacker Carlos Emmons and offensive tackle Luke Petitgout, both of whom were slowed by injuries over the last two seasons.

The release of Arrington ended a brief and unsatisfying tenure with the Giants for the former Pro Bowler, who was signed last year for $49 million over seven years but suffered an Achilles injury against Dallas on Oct. 23 and played in only six games.

"LaVar's situation is unfortunate because he was just starting to really become a factor in our defense at the time of his injury," Reese said.

Reese, who last month replaced the retired Ernie Accorsi, served notice that he will not stand pat with a team that won the NFC East in 2005 but was humiliated in a first-round playoff loss to Carolina, then squeaked into the playoffs last season with an 8-8 record and again lost in the first round.

"These are difficult decisions," Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said. "But as Jerry and I looked at the roster, they are decisions we felt we had to make as we start to compose our team for the upcoming season."

Combined with the retirement of running back Tiki Barber, the Giants now have additional salary-cap space to pursue free agents this offseason. Emmons had two years remaining on a five-year contract worth $16.5 million and was to make $2 million this year, and Petitgout had two years left on his contract and was due $5 million for 2007.

Arrington, whose contract was filled with incentives, was scheduled to make $900,000 next season.

Petitgout started 106 games at tackle and guard over eight seasons for the Giants, but broke his leg against Chicago on Nov. 12 and missed the Giants' final seven games. He became expendable when guard David Diehl switched to left tackle and played well in his absence.

Dumping Petitgout's contract could give the Giants a better shot at re-signing free-agent center Shaun O'Hara.

Emmons, acquired from Philadelphia in 2004, played in 36 games in three seasons but missed a total of 11 games in the last two seasons with a pectoral injury.

Calls to the agents for all three players were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Giants begin re-shaping roster

The New York Giants cut three big-name veteran players Monday, left tackle Luke Petitgout and linebackers LaVar Arrington and Carlos Emmons.

Only the Petitgout move can be viewed as a complete surprise.

Arrington Says the NFL Player's Union is like Organized Crime

Lavar Arrington says his contract with the Redskins in 2003 originally included a $6.5 million bonus. But, in the final version of the contract that pat was excluded. His agent, Carl Poston, didn't realize it, and told his client to sign. Now, the NFL Player's Union has suspended Poston and Arrington is mad at the organization. He said, "they do a lot of foul stuff. It's like organized crime, to be honest with you. They are bad."

LaVar Arrington showing why NFL players are not their own agents

You remember LaVar, his agent didn't read his contract and lost him $6.5 million then gave up another $4.4 million to be a free agent. And somehow LaVar thinks it was the NFLPA was the one who screwed him, go figure.

Everybody do the ... jump shot?

Monday Night: The Giants keep me a respectable 2-3 for this last week, and upcoming is a big weekend. To keep it to the top five games, I have declared the following games unworthy of my attention:

-Dallas at Carolina. See Cowboys comments below, suffice to say this one won't be close
-Seattle at Kansas City. Records aside, these teams suck.
-Jacksonville at Philadelphia. These teams ... wait, these guys will still make a pretty sweet matchup.

Strike that! Next week, six games! It has been revealed!

So anyways, Monday Night: Bill Parcells had a shorter leash on Bledsoe than I thought, but did I not accurately call this as the game where he gets taken out? One pick was all it took. Romo looked marginally better, but without the necessary reps for a good game. The difference between the QB's will come down to whether or not Dallas plans on blocking well the rest of the year. If they do, its a wash. If they don't Bledsoe won't last the year so they might as well play Romo.
The Giants looked for real, and could someone please tell me which video the jump shot is from? I don't watch BET as much as I did when I was a boy ...But the Cowboys made it hard to judge them. Did they perform expertly a bend-but-not-break strategy, r was Dallas just sloppy? Were they confusing in their schemes, or was Dallas just sloppy? The jury's still out for me on these guys.

So anyways ... Top 10! (last weeks rankkings in parentheses)

1. Chicago Bears (1). I can't slide these guys out on a bye week, no matter how much better Indy looked. They play cake teams the next two weeks, then go to the Northeast for that brutal road stretch. But for now, they get the nod over ...
2. Indianapolis Colts (3). I tried to get their goat, and they responded. But Peyton needs a win in Denver to stay atop the AFC. They crave home field as much as anyone else, but their going to have to go to two legit contenders at home, Broncos and Pats, to get it. Good games ahead.
3. New England Patriots (4). I'm not going to ask for any dap for calling their blowout against the Bills. All they do is win games. But who kicks for them in January this year? Gostkowski?
4. Denver Broncos (6). I'll give them some love this week, because their gonna have to earn it against Indy. This will be a blockbuster game for sure. Jake turns the ball over too much to win a close one, but he's got a defense to cover his mistakes.
5. Carolina Panthers (2). Whoops! They can't finish off Cincy when it matters, and their defense let up at the end. They need to run the ball better, but I'm still sold on the franchise making it deep.
6. Baltimore Ravens (8). This whole list seems to be Indy, New England and a bunch of defenses. Will McNair be healthy? Spry? Going into New Orleans isn't easy, because its a devestated town with no other attractions besides the football game. Each week the Saints play in what amounts to Sarejevo, and inspired by the suffering they see, win one for the refugees.
7. San Diego Chargers (5). Falling hard; this might be the last time you see them in the top ten if they lose to St. Louis. I'm disappointed in Shawne Merriman if what they allege is true; he was going to be on my halfway All-Pros until a last second change. Shaun Phillips is out as well. Will Merriman get a convenient reprieve until later, allowing him to play? They better hope so. Their defense is limping and their offense can't carry them alone.
8. New Orleans Saints (9). This game will be a big one, but I'm already leaning towards the home team. Like I said earlier, New Orleans is a tragedy STILL OCCURRING, and the players do what they can to alert the nation to the situation. Hats off to them for doing it. I'll be rooting for them this weekend, even though I love McNair.
9. New York Giants (unranked). This was a big win on the road, and they are now the only tema in hte division undefeated. That pass rush is nasty, but they need to stay healthy. Doesn't look like Arrington is going to be available. Trap game coming up against Tampa Bay, they better be careful.
10. Cincinnati Bengals (unranked). They knock my pet favorites, the Jets, out of the top ten. I asked myself who I'd be more scared to play, and the answer was the Bengals. Their defense came up big against Carolina, and they needed that win. But their offense didn't really impress me.

Arrington To Face Former Team This Week

Lavar Arrington will play his former Redskins this week. The Redskins have taken jabs at him all week. Safety Shawn Springs said that Arrington would have nothing to tell the Giants about the Redskins' defense, because he didn't really know all of the plays himself. Arrington has declined much media time this week, and prefers to just let his actions show on the field.
