Explaining It Away
Well it's pretty simple to explain away Eric Chavez's numbers. Just look at his averages over his career, they don't really change. Sure his power was death last year and his numbers abysmal this season, but he was playing with a back injury that obviously required surgery. Looking at the numbers it just seems obvious, that the man was clean.

The Verdict
The only claim you can make against Chavez would be that he's become incredibly injury prone since the start of testing and that he playted with some noted juicers in Giambi and others. But that is so incredibly circumstancial that it wouldn't even remotely be fair. So...

Eric Chavez is headed for another back surgery and won't return in 2009 for the Oakland Athletics. The six-time Gold Glove third baseman, on the 60-day disabled list with a herniated disk and strained right forearm, is scheduled to have the operation June 23, performed by Dr. Robert Watkins. This will be his second back surgery - the same microdiscectomy procedure in a different spot - and fifth operation overall since Sept. 5, 2007.

Oakland manager Bob Geren told the San Francisco Chronicle's Henry Schulman this afternoon that Eric Chavez is headed for back surgery. The third baseman told the Chronicle's Susan Slusser last month that another procedure "would spell the end to his career."The 31-year-old third baseman has a career batting line of .268/.345/.482 over 11 major league seasons, but has appeared in just 121 games since the start of the '07 season.

It seems like ever since I've been in the big leagues that the Angels and A's have been in 1st or 2nd in the division so there's definitely a little rivalry going on here. It's not like some of those football rivalries, like Texas-Oklahoma or USC-UCLA, but they are definitely a team we look at and always want to play well against because they're always in the race. For a few years there when they had guys like Tejada and Chavez and drums in the outfield it felt like a Friday night football game to me. But it's died down a little since then. There's definitely more red in the stands these days. The Halo fans are everywhere. As an opponent you do have to give the A's front office some credit. They have made deals that have been unpopular with fans but a lot of those deals have really worked out for them. They have brought in some young players that have been really productive. Someone asked me how the Rich Harden trade was going to impact the division. I don't know how big an impact it will have on them because he hasn't pitched much anyway. Everyone in the league thinks he's one of the best when he's healthy, but he hasn't been healthy. But if the trade works the way these other trades have worked for them then the A's will be in the race until the end. That's why we always want to play well against them. They got the first one. Hopefully we'll get the next two.
