UMass Can Get Shot at NCAA Tournament At-Large Bid With Wins Over Butler, Rhode Island

When the University of Massachusetts lost 99-94 to a mediocre St. Bonaventure team on Feb. 20, the Minutemen’s NCAA Tournament at-large hopes went on life support.
The loss was the third straight defeat for UMass, dropping the Minutemen to 16-9 (6-6 Atlantic 10).
But UMass bounced back from that loss with a solid home win Feb. 23 against Dayton and then really improved its Big Dance resume with a 77-72 upset victory at Xavier on Saturday. The Minutemen, who were four-point underdogs, were red hot from long range, hitting a season-high 52 percent of their 3-pointers (13 of 25). Terrell Vinson and Freddie Riley combined for 10 long-range shots, and the win snapped a three-game road losing streak and five-game skid at Xavier.
UMass (18-9, 8-6) now has an RPI of 54. On the positive side, the Minutemen have seven wins over RPI top-100 teams, with a best victory against No. 39 La Salle. UMass also doesn’t have any losses to sub-150 teams, although defeats to George Washington (No. 146) an...

A10 Quick Hitters: I have a dream edition

Follow @Ianrnolan
January 21st or Martin Luther King Jr. Day is for many people, a day off from work, a day to reflect back on a time when equality in this country wasn’t always the case. On August 28th, 1963 MLK delivered his now famous “I have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Today, Americans remember the speech on this day more than any other day of the year and with that in mind we got to thinking. What “dreams” do Atlantic 10 coaches and fans have for their teams on this day? What thoughts are these head men having as they prepare for the third week of Atlantic 10 play? What do they want their teams to start doing, or continue to do to have success?
Let’s find out what some A10 coaches may be dreaming of this afternoon.

UMass’ Morgan Out For Season: What it Means

UMass’ Jesse Morgan will be out for the season with a knee injury.
UMass’ second leading scorer Jesse Morgan, a junior, will be out for the rest of the season after injuring his right knee in the team’s loss to Saint Louis last Thursday.
Morgan is averaging 13.4 points per contest and is shooting over 35% from three point range. Morgan is one of the Minutemen’s most experienced players and consistent scorers, having averaged 9.9 points a game in his sophomore season. In addition to missing the junior on the offensive side of the ball, the 6’5″ Morgan is also a valuable perimeter defender who often matches up against opposing team’s best scoring guards. Morgan was a key three point threat that played in integral role in the UMass offense that is not shy about putting up shoots from long range.
In his absence coach Derek Kellogg says that senior Freddie Riley will see the bulk of the minutes at that position.
Earlier this season we wrote about how it was Riley’s time to step up as a...

UMass 75, E. Michigan 61

Freddie Riley came off the bench in the first half to make five 3-pointers in a span of 3:41 to spark Massachusetts to its seventh consecutive win, 75-61 over Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

The first of Riley's 3-pointers gave the Minutemen (10-3) a 13-12 lead, and they led by 10 points, 25-15, after the last of them, with 7:58 until halftime.

Riley added another trey in the second half and moved into sixth place on Massachusetts' career list for 3-pointers made with 179. The senior guard was scoring just 4.4 points per game this season but has averaged 12.3 over the last four games.

Chaz Williams, who came in averaging 7.3 assists, handed out nine for the Minutemen and added 14 points. Maxie Esho contributed 13 points and nine rebounds.

J.R. Sims scored 12 points and Glenn Bryant had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles (7-7).

UMass wins exhibition, finds Freddie Riley in process

Follow @Ianrnolan

UMass downed American International at the Mullins Center on Saturday by a score of 87-82 behind 24 points and 11 assists from preseason all conference point guard Chaz Williams. UMass shot 48% from the floor and canned 12 of 24 three pointers while assisting on 22 field goals.
While the result is not surprising nor all that impressive, UMass remains the Atlantic 10 club most primed for a breakout season behind fifth year head coach Derek Kellogg. The Minutemen return nearly all viable pieces from their NIT team a year ago, and will have the firepower to score with, and beat any team in the conference on a given night.
While Chaz Williams may be the face of the team (if not the league at this point) Saturday night’s five point exhibition win provided a peek into what other weapons the Minutemen can beat clubs with.
Namely, senior guard Freddie Riley. An old face, possibly with a new game. Or an old game, depending on how you look at it.

Minutemen Travel to Philly and...

I'm usually capable of putting everything in prospective, and heading into the game tonight in Philly I never really expected the Minutemen basketball team to come away with a victory - they're just not very good on the road and it's really tough to win road games in the A-10. Plus when someone who didn't suffer through the game tonight looks at the final score they won't realize how terrible this game was to watch. After the game was essentially in hand SJU took their foot off the gas and a Jesse Morgan/Freddie Riley barrage of three pointers closed the gap late and made the outcome look more respectable at 73-62 but in reality my analysis of this game is something akin to this...Admittedly the team scoring 15 points over the first 15 minutes of the second half didn't do them any favors but there must be something good to talk about right?

Evaluating Where Things Stand

Coach Kellogg has figured some stuff outSince the November 21st game at Boston College I had watched, or listened to every UMass basketball game this season until Saturday night. On Saturday night my very pregnant wife and I went out for what very well may be the last date night sans children that we will ever go on -- and with that in mind I sacrificed the George Washington road game and did my best to not constantly check my ESPN phone app to check the score. So, because I didn't see the game I'm not going to waste space here talking about the game. From all accounts the bench duo of Farrell and Riley played well, Terrell Vinson obviously had a great game, and the pieces aligned for another A-10 road win, which as we've said a million times already this season and very difficult to come by. As we stand right now -- on February 6th, the UMass basketball team is 17-6, 6-3 in conference and half a game out of first place (behind Temple). I figure now is a good time to look...

UMass 86, George Washington 75

Terrell Vinson matched his career high with 21 points and Massachusetts won its 11th game in 14 tries by defeating George Washington 86-75 on Saturday night.

The Minutemen avoided their first losing streak of the season, bouncing back from an overtime loss at Rhode Island.

Chaz Williams scored 15 points and Freddie Riley added 12 for Massachusetts (17-6, 6-3 Atlantic 10 Conference), which is just a half game behind conference leader Temple. The Minutemen shot a season-best 55.4 percent from the field (31 of 56).

Tony Taylor (26 points) and Dwayne Smith (16) scored season highs for the Colonials (8-15, 3-6), who lost their fourth consecutive game and second straight home conference game.

The Minutemen used six 3-pointers to lead 40-33 lead at halftime. Then they got their transition game working, creating turnovers that led to a handful of rim-rattling dunks to hold off several George Washington spurts.

UMass Opens A10 with Good Win over Fordham

Two things come to mind after yesterday's 80-76 UMass victory over Fordham to open the A-10 season, the first is that having attended the game live and in person in the Bill I can confirm that it has been far too long since I was on campus, and second -- never before has a game that felt like a blowout left me feeling so nervous in the final two minutes. This was about as good a t-e-a-m team victory that I've seen in recent memory. The Minutemen had 5 guys in double digit scoring, they were carried at times by Freddie Riley, Jesse Morgan, Terrell Vinson for spurts and for most of the game by Chaz Williams who once again provided cardiac moments in the waning seconds of the game, only to send everyone into a frenzy moments later. There were still some concerning moments in this game, the team still allows too many offensive rebounds, their shooting was pretty lousy at times, and our free throw shooting is horrendous -- but the team only really fell behind once by any significa...

Chaz Williams scored 16 points and Freddie Riley 14 to lead Massachusetts to an 82-46 win over cross-state rival Boston College Monday night.

The Minutemen (4-0) won for just the second time in the last 13 meetings against Boston College. Cady Lalanne and Jesse Morgan each added 11 points.

It was the second straight lopsided loss for the Eagles (1-2) after a season-opening win over New Hampshire. Boston College, picked to finish last in the Atlantic Coast Conference's preseason poll, lost 86-64 at intrastate rival Holy Cross on Friday.

Patrick Heckmann, who missed Friday's loss with a sprained ankle, led BC with 11 points and Matt Humphrey had 10.

UMass led 37-26 at halftime and never had its advantage fall below double digits in the second half. The Minutemen opened it to 54-35 on Sampson Carter's put-back with 13:13 minutes to play.

Boston College had cut it to 41-31 on Heckmann's short jumper 3 minutes into the second half, but the Minutemen scored 13 of the next 17 points to take cont

They were defeated handily at the hands of Manhattan, yet responded with a win over non-Division I opponent Penn State-Abington on Mo
