Travis McKie scored 19 points and Wake Forest beat Xavier 66-59 on Wednesday night for its third straight win.

Codi Miller-McIntyre had 16 points, C.J. Harris added 15 and the Demon Deacons (7-5) erased their only deficit of the second half by scoring 12 straight points. They matched their longest winning streak under third-year coach Jeff Bzdelik.

Travis Taylor had 18 points - but just two in the second half - and 10 rebounds for the Musketeers (7-6).

They rallied from 11 points down and took a 49-48 lead on Jeff Robinson's jumper with just under seven minutes left.

But Xavier came up empty on eight straight possessions and went scoreless for 4 1/2 critical minutes, and the Demon Deacons took over.

Freshman Devin Thomas gave Wake Forest the lead back with a reverse layup on the next trip down court. Miller-McIntyre delivered the dagger with just under four minutes left when he rattled in a long 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down to make it 57-49.

Xavier holds on to beat Drexel in Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Semaj Christon scored a season-high 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting, helping Xavier bounce back from a tough loss with a 69-65 victory over Drexel on Friday in the DirecTV Classic consolation bracket.

Christon, a freshman, had 18 points in the Musketeers' first defeat of the season, 70-67 to Pacific on Thursday. He added six assists in this one to lead Xavier (4-1), which also got 13 points from Jeff Robinson and 12 from Justin Martin. Martin's free throw with 9 seconds left made it a two-possession game and effectively sealed the victory.

Damion Lee had 19 points and Frantz Massenat added 18 for the Dragons (1-4), who lost despite shooting 55 percent from the field. Xavier nearly matched that number, hitting 51 percent of its shots.

On Sunday, Xavier will face the winner of late Friday's Rice-Drake matchup, while Drexel will play the loser of that game.

Energized Xavier makes early statement

CINCINNATI - The familiar names, the ones who sparked two Sweet 16 appearances in the last three years and some very forgettable headlines starting last December, are gone.

Turns out Xavier basketball is going to be OK. And maybe better than that.

The new Musketeers scored a statement victory over Butler Tuesday afternoon, one that should raise a few eyebrows regionally, in the Atlantic 10 and nationally. Butler and VCU joining the league have raised the Atlantic 10's profile, and the Bulldogs came to Cintas Center Tuesday as the more known and proven commodity.

Xavier dominated from start to finish, winning 62-47. Jeff Robinson led all scorers with 17 and also had eight rebounds, and Travis Taylor had 15 and nine rebounds. The Xavier lead reached 14 in the first half and swelled all the way to 20 with 5:28 to go; there were neither signs of a Butler comeback not anything flukish about the way Xavier -- picked ninth in the official Atlantic 10 preseason poll -- did it.

Jeff Robinson scored 17 points, and Travis Taylor added 15 points and nine rebounds to help Xavier beat cold-shooting Butler 62-47 on Tuesday.

Justin Martin added 10 points for Xavier (2-0), and Dee Davis led a defensive effort that limited Butler (1-1) to 36.5 shooting percentage (19 of 52), including 25 percent (7 of 28) in the second half.

Davis scored nine points while helping hold Butler guard Rotnei Clarke to seven points after he scored 21 in Butler's season-opening 74-59 victory over Elon on Saturday.

Xavier shot 50 percent (23 of 46), never trailed and led by 20 points late in the game.

Freshman Kellen Dunham led Butler with 11 points. Andrew Smith added nine points, all in 15 minutes of the first half after going scoreless in Butler's opener.

Playing before a crowd of 9,876 that showed up at the 10,250-seat Cintas Center for the rare late-afternoon weekday game, Xavier improved its overall record against Butler to 31-16. The Musketeers have won 10 of the last 12 games against the Bulldo

#78 Xavier Musketeers: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series. Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days. Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.
We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order. We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.
Year in and year out, the Xavier Musketeers are a perennial mid-major power. They can compete with some of the best power conference teams around and always test themselves with a challenging non-conference schedule. This season will be a year of transition for Chris Mack though as X loses all five of its starters including Dezmine Wells who was recently expelled from the school.

Xavier needs better defense down the stretch

The Atlantic 10 conference is much improved this year. It's also a more balanced league, which bodes well for Xavier heading into the season's final month. Despite the Musketeers' recent struggles, they entered February just a half-game out of first place.

Rhode Island's stunning win at Dayton created a three-way tie at the top of the A-10 standings with UMass, La Salle and Saint Bonaventure at 5-2. Temple was 4-2, and Xavier was 5-3 coming off its win Jan. 28 at Charlotte.

Coach Chris Mack said the Musketeers need to hold serve at home and survive on the road. In the final week of January, Xavier did the reverse. The Musketeers lost at home to Saint Louis, then won a tight 74-70 contest at Charlotte.

To this point, the Musketeers have weathered the storm, but which version of the team will show up in February? The one that rolled to an 8-0 start and a top-10 ranking, or the one that lost five of six games in one stretch and was blown out at Dayton?

A few trends to follow:

Xavier win streak bringing confidence back

Xavier appears to be regaining its confidence, although coach Chris Mack insists that's something the Musketeers never lost."Our kids are confident all the time," Mack said. "Sometimes we have to tell them not to be so confident. Guys are just playing. That's all I ask of them, to play hard. And it starts with our defensive intensity."The Musketeers stretched their winning streak to three with a victory over St. Bonaventure on Jan. 14. There were no marquee wins in that stretch, but after losing five of six in the wake of the brawl with Cincinnati, Xavier just needed to experience success.Whether it was a loss of swagger or focus amid the public scrutiny following the fight is uncertain. But clearly something change for a couple weeks for this Xavier team that began the season 8-0 with impressive wins over Butler, Vanderbilt and Purdue."We just took our foot off the gas pedal," forward Andre Walker said. "We just have to play a complete and solid 40 minutes.
Xavier beats Duquesne 78-50, gets back on track

Freshman Dez Wells dunked his way to 16 points with nine rebounds, and Xavier's defense was back in form for the first time in a month, steadying the Musketeers to a 78-50 victory over Duquesne on Wednesday night.

Xavier (11-5, 2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference) got back-to-back wins since a brawl against rival Cincinnati on Dec. 10 resulted in suspensions and left a formerly No. 8 team struggling to regain its confidence and defensive toughness. The Musketeers were in the right place to do it - the Cintas Center, where they've won a league-record 41 straight A-10 games.

Xavier pulled ahead 44-16 by halftime, the Musketeers' stingiest opening half in three years. It was by far the worst showing for Duquesne (10-7, 1-2), which led the A-10 in scoring at 77.7 points per game.

Four players reached double figures in Xavier's most lopsided win of the season. Tu Holloway had 11 points and 11 assists, and Xavier's taller front line dominated the boards 40-29.

The Bottoms Line Non-BCS Watch List: Xavier Musketeers

The final team on the Non-BCS Watch List is a perennial NCAA Tournament team that boasts one of the top players in the nation.
Xavier Musketeers
Looking Back
Xavier stumbled out of the gate last season, losing five of their first 13 games due in part to a series of injuries and the ineligibility of a key freshman. Coach Chris Mack rallied the troops, and the Muskies won 16 of their final 17 regular season games. They finished 15-1 in the Atlantic 10, but a one-point loss to Dayton in their first game of the conference tournament dropped them to a six seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to Marquette in the first round.
The Musketeers finished 45th in the Pomeroy Ratings, and despite a sharp decline in their pace of play, the offense ranked in the Top 50 for the fifth straight season. They were efficient at getting to the free throw line and posted Top 75 numbers for both effective field goal and turnover percentages. The Xavier defense ranked 59th overall, which was thei...

The Top-25 Thread

Starting a thread to keep all these preseason polls in one place

Gary Parrish has XU at Lucky 13

Top returnees: Tu Holloway, Mark Lyons, Kenny Frease, Jeff Robinson, Brad Redford.

Top newcomers: Dezmine Wells, Dee Davis, Travis Taylor, Justin Martin.

Outlook: Holloway is good enough to give the Musketeers a chance against anybody and make them the clear A-10 favorites. Chris Mack has averaged 25 wins in his first two seasons at Xavier. He could exceed that this season and emerge as the next non-BCS coach to take a team on a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
