Clemson adds second big man in class of 2013

The Tigers are proving yet again, size does matter…at least in the ACC.
Brad Brownell has locked down Sidy Mohamed Djitte out of Fayetteville, N.C., the second big man in the 2013 class. The other was Ibrahim Djambo, who comes with one season of playing time at Three River Community College in Missouri.
Djitter is a solid get. The 43rd ranked center, according to ESPN, he’s long and physical and can dominate the paint defensively. He gets good position on the block, but prefers to swat away the shots. When it comes to offense, Djitte likes to face the basket and is capable of stretching his shot out to about 12-15 feet.
Like most big men, Djitte has a lot of potential, but will need a couple years to develop his back the the basket game.
For Clemson, with the departure of Devin Booker, Milton Jennings and Bernard Sullivan, they headed into the offseason desperately needing to get some bodies for the paint. I would go ahead and declare it a success.
No, I don’t expect either to be competing for first-tea

Clemson target Sidy Djitte will decide Monday

Sidy Djitte, a 6-10, 210 pound center in the class of 2013 from Fayetteville, North Carolina, will make his college choice tomorrow.
The 43rd ranked center (according to ESPN) is picking between the Clemson Tigers, Memphis Tigers and the Cincinnati Bearcats.
Djitte is a true center inside. He’s long and physical and can handle the paint on the defensive side. When it comes to offense, he prefers to face the basket and is capable of hitting a 15-foot jumper. Like most big men coming out of high school, he will need a couple years to develop his back to the basket game.
With the departure of Devin Booker, Milton Jennings and Bernard Sullivan, Clemson’s coach Brad Brownell is desperate for any kind of size in the paint. Currently, the Tigers have only two players who stand over 6-8, Landry Nnoko (who played about six minutes per game last year) and Ibrahim Djambo, who transferred from Three Rivers Community College.
At the very least, if Dijitte heads to Clemson, he’s guaranteed some freshman playing time

Recruiting Notebook: Beilein watches Ricky Doyle, Booker plans visits, Mizzou decommit lists Michigan

John Beilein was in Florida on Thursday evening to check in on 2014 big man Ricky Doyle. Beielin joined Miami head coach Jim Larranaga in the stands to watch the back-to-the-basket big man score 20 points and grab seven rebounds to lead Bishop Verot to a 36-point playoff win.
Doyle recently visited Miami and is also being pursuited by Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State, Boston College, Georgia, Alabama and others.
Doyle, missed most of the last two months with a stress fracture injury but has been playing well since his return including a 31 point outing against Dunbar. Doyle is averaging 23 points and seven rebounds in his junior season and Michigan is expected to get a visit after his season.
Devin Booker sets visits
Michigan and Missouri have long been involved in the Devin Booker sweepstakes. Michigan State jumped in head first this summer and Tom Izzo recently watched Booker at Moss Point. Local SEC schools have also paid plenty of notice to the 5-star junior. Most recently, the...

Devin Booker makes statement in front of Michigan coaches

Devin Booker, a five-star 2014 guard prospect being heavily recruited by Michigan, has heard the knock on him and his Moss Point teammates. The teams up north in Jackson say that Moss Point doesn’t play anyone. They say Booker may be good, but just wait until he plays the competition around the capital city.
On Monday, that’s just what Booker did. The Grand Rapids native led his team up to Jackson to play Greenville-Weston High School. In a gym crowded with high-major college coaches, Booker scored 34 points in a 63-60 Moss Point victory. (Photo: Chip English)
“They (players in Jackson) have no respect for the competition all the way in the bottom of Mississippi. They always say I’m not playing against anybody down here. To go up there, we all have a chip on our shoulder, you know?” Booker said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “They always hear about me, so they just want to stop me. Every time we go up there, everybody’s rooting against us. Every time we go up there, they always...

The Clemson Tigers took on Wake Forest tonight in an ACC college hoops matchup that was pretty uneventful, except for one very spectacular play. Clemson inbounded the ball from the sideline and Devin Booker came off a well set back screen and threw down a perfectly placed alley-oop from teammate Rod Hall. Very Lob City-esque.
Clemson forward Devin Booker is ready to lead the Tigers back to the postseason after averaging 10.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last season. (Credit: Rex Brown/IPTAY Media)
Devin Booker stayed busy over the summer, splitting time between going to class and improving his basketball skills on the Clemson campus.
After all that work Booker finally took a break in September for a trip to Washington, D.C., to visit older brother Trevor, a former college teammate and current forward for the Washington Wizards. It was an eight-hour drive both ways for Booker, now a senior, and Clemson graduate assistant Jonah Baize, but the time with family was well worth the trip.
“We were able to bond a lot, play against each other and make each other better,” Booker said in a recent interview with College Chalktalk. “He’s someone I can look to for anything and tells me about the hard work it takes to get to the level he’s at. I know this is going to be a quick year, and I know I have to ...

Summer in Review: Devin Booker

Devin Booker was on everybody’s list to watch this spring and summer. The Michigan native exploded on the Mississippi prep circuit and the word was out across the nation. Everyone wanted to see what the hype was about. It was up to Booker, who hadn’t been seen by most prominent national scouts, to prove his mettle on the big stage. The 6-foot-5 guard had every opportunity, playing with the Alabama Challenge on the prestigious Nike EYBL circuit, and certainly made the most of it.

Devin Booker had a career-high 22 points, freshman T.J. Sapp had four 3-pointers and Clemson overcame a nine-point deficit in the second half to defeat East Tennessee State 65-58 on Sunday.

The Tigers (8-6) had lost two of three games at the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii last week and entered this one seeking a confidence builder before Atlantic Coast Conference play starts next Saturday. East Tennessee State (5-7) gave Clemson all it could handle, leading 41-32 with 16 minutes to go.

The Tigers used a 12-2 run to get back into it, and Sapp's final 3-pointer put them in front 49-47. Booker followed with a breakaway jam that got the sparse holiday crowd at Littlejohn Coliseum on its feet.

Clemson 70, Alabama St. 45

Devin Booker had 13 points and seven rebounds as Clemson overwhelmed Alabama State with its size and halfcourt defense Monday night, strolling to a 70-45 win.

Milton Jennings added 12 points off the bench for Clemson (6-4), which shot 50 percent for the second straight game, this time making 24 of 48.

Kenderek Washington scored 10 points for Alabama State (2-8), which tried a 2-3 zone to try to compensate for using no one taller than 6-foot-6.

But the Hornets shot just 32.7 percent (17 of 52) against Clemson's man-to-man defense and committed 16 turnovers.

The Tigers went on a 9-0 run after the game was tied 3-3 after 4 minutes. Alabama State made just one of its first 14 field-goal tries and committed five turnovers in that span. Still, the Tigers' lead didn't reach double digits until two Booker free throws made it 29-19 with 4:15 remaining until halftime.
