Bucks like rookie Henson's high ceiling

ST. FRANCIS, Wis. With the shot clock running down at the Bucks scrimmage last Thursday, the ball landed in John Henson's hands as the Bucks rookie stood at the top of the key. There was no time for another pass. He had to shoot.Just inside of the 3-point line, this wasn't the range Henson was used to when he played at North Carolina last season. The Tar Heels had Harrison Barnes to shoot out there or Kendall Marshall or Dexter Strickland. Even Tyler Zeller usually took deeper shots than Henson, while the power forward was left to clean up the glass, block shots at will, and drain the occasional hook shot in the post. But as a Milwaukee Buck, more was expected of Henson in a different offense. He squared up for a deep jump shot the shot clock running down and buried it. Skiles said after the scrimmage that Henson had shown him on plenty of occasions that he could hit that deep of a jumper. In practice this past weekend, Henson hit a few more from the same range in a live scrimmage a potential sign

Bucks sign first-rounder Henson

MILWAUKEE -- The Bucks announced Tuesday that they had signed first-round draft pick John Henson to a multi-year contract. Henson was the 14th overall pick in last month's NBA Draft. Henson, a 6-foot-11 power forward, joins Milwaukee after a decorated three-year career at the University of North Carolina, where he averaged 10.3 points and 8.1 rebounds in 109 career contests. He leaves North Carolina as the Tar Heels' all-time leader in blocked shots per game (2.56). The lanky forward also ranks 12th all-time in ACC annals in blocks. The Greensboro, N.C., native is a two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year (2011, 2012), as well as a first-team all-ACC performer as a junior, when he averaged 13.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game. Henson will play for the Bucks in the 2012 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The Bucks have a five-game schedule in the summer league, which begins play July 16, at 9:30 p.m. versus New Orleans.

North Carolina Basketball: A Look at John Henson

When John Henson came to Chapel Hill three years ago the optimists kept saying to take a good look at him as it would be his only year donning the caroline blue. The pessimists kept talking about his lack of build, as they kept pointing out that “he was too skinny”. Being a realist I can say that in the three seasons under Roy Williams the power forward bulked up some, but more importantly become a much better player, and did so on both sides of the ball. Henson, who stands at 6’11″/215 lbs has a wing span of 7’5″, which makes him a heck of a shot blocker (averaging close to 3 per game this season), and helped him get ACC Defensive Player of the Year two seasons in a row. All of this is should make him a lottery pick in this year’s NBA Draft, while the fact that on offense he is still raw and that is free throw shooting is very poor, puts him out of a Top 10 picks for most analysts, lower (to much lower) for others.

By all means, when we speak of the forward he is not someone who d...

UNC's Henson eager to return vs. Creighton

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- John Henson has never been much of a sit-still kind of guy. He likes to get on his feet and move his long legs around.

The North Carolina forward loves to joke, smile, laugh with and at people, and he just enjoys everything life has to offer. Except injuries.

And that has been Henson's bane for the last nine days after landing hard on his left wrist early in the Tar Heels' victory over Maryland ACC Tournament quarterfinals. Since then, Henson has been a constant source of discussion in media rooms, talk radio and probably super market lines along Tobacco Road.

This is the time of year this region lives for, and when one of its most integral players is in limbo, stress levels soar.

But not for Henson. He hasn't enjoyed the process, but he can't do much about it but get treatment and seek help from a higher source.

He's iced it, undergone micro frequency treatment, had an ultrasound, applied creams, taken pills, and has prayed quite a bit, too. He's even had

With a win over Vermont, the North Carolina Tar Heels are set to take on 8-seed Creighton tomorrow, and they are hopeful that forward John Henson will be there. Henson has been out recently with a wrist injury, but according to Robbi Pickeral of ESPN, he says "it's feeling better."The Tar Heels ranked No. 1 in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament and have been without Henson since March 9 when his injury occurred in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. Coach Roy Williams says he has no update if Henson can play or not. "I wish I could tell you because I'm tired of answering the daggum thing," said Williams before Saturday's practice. "I really don't have any other information at all to add to what I said yesterday."We'll see tomorrow if he can play or not.The junior has been avearging about 14 points and ten rebounds per game so far this season. He'll be a huge factor if he can be able to play. Watch out Creighton.Written by Josh Dhani, Founder Josh

Henson's wrist injury adds stress on UNC bench

North Carolina coach Roy Williams is still unsure whether junior forward John Henson will be ready for the Tar Heels' opener in the NCAA tournament Friday.

Henson sprained his left wrist in a fall during the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament and missed the last two games. He went through about 70 percent of the team's practice Thursday morning in Chapel Hill, then participated in a light workout with his teammates at the Greensboro Coliseum in the afternoon.

Trainer Chris Hirth wrapped Henson's wrist and included a protective pad on it just before the workout. Henson said he's improving each day and wants to try to play in top-seeded Tar Heels' game against 16th-seeded Vermont in the Midwest Regional.

But Williams says he's ''not convinced'' Henson is ready just yet.

Henson's wrist continues to be a question for UNC

North Carolina coach Roy Williams says he probably won't know until Thursday whether John Henson will be ready for the Tar Heels' NCAA tournament opener.

Henson hurt his left wrist on a fall during the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament in Atlanta. The 6-foot-10 forward didn't play the final two games of the tournament, though he dressed out for the championship game against Florida State.

Williams says he is ''hopeful'' that Henson will be ready for Friday's game against the Lamar-Vermont winner. The top-seeded Tar Heels are playing about an hour west of the Chapel Hill campus in Greensboro.

Henson is averaging about 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game. He's the two-time ACC defensive player of the year.

UNC's Henson dresses for ACC title game

North Carolina forward John Henson is in uniform and has his sore left wrist taped as he is participating in warmups before Sunday's ACC championship game against Florida State.

Tar Heels spokesman Steve Kirschner says Henson will play ''only in an emergency situation.''

Henson missed the No. 4 Tar Heels' win over North Carolina State in Saturday's semifinals after hurting his wrist in the first half of Friday's win over Maryland.

North Carolina said his status for the championship game will be determined at gametime.

Saturday's game was the first Henson has missed in his three-year career.

The 6-foot-11 Henson, a junior, is averaging 13.8 points and a team-leading 10.1 rebounds per game.

UNC's Henson injures left wrist vs. Maryland

North Carolina forward John Henson has injured his left wrist in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

The ACC's defensive player of the year was hurt on drive to the basket in Friday's quarterfinals, going down on a hard foul by Maryland's Ashton Pankey. Henson flexed his hand repeatedly and went to the locker room for treatment with 13:51 left in the first half.

Henson returned a short time later, his wrist heavily taped, and checked back into the game with 8:06 remaining.

He didn't last long. Less than a minute later, Henson left the game again and watched the rest of the half from the bench.

Henson is averaging 14.2 points and leading the No. 4 Tar Heels with 10.3 rebounds per game.

'Canes look to pull off upset against Tar Heels

While their team has produced a string of decisive victories, North Carolina coach Roy Williams and forward John Henson still see plenty of room for improvement.

After using a late surge to put away their most recent opponent, the third-ranked Tar Heels could use a better performance Tuesday night against Miami, a team that's given them problems over the past couple of seasons.

Since falling at then-No. 1 Kentucky on Dec. 3, North Carolina (14-2, 1-0 ACC) has won eight straight - all at home - and prevailed in each of its last six games by at least 15 points. However, that doesn't necessarily mean the Tar Heels have had it easy in every game.

They let Boston College trim a 21-point lead to nine with 9:18 remaining before going on a 22-8 run in a 83-60 victory Saturday and extended its record win streak at the Smith Center to 27 games.

"Sometimes, when we get a good lead, we let up defensively and we just want to run out and score," Henson said. "I think we've got to just play D

North Carolina Basketball: Henson named ACC Player of the Week

John Henson gets ACC Player of the Week for 2nd time this seasonI had said “this would not be the only time the young man wins this award this season” when junior John Henson won ACC Player of the Week a while back. Well, today I can say I was right in saying that as the official ACC site has him as the top performer in the conference. If you have been watching the 6’11″ big man this season he seems to have become the leader on the floor, working hard on both ends of the floor for head coach Roy Williams. And while most think that it should be Harrison Barnes, I think that people having to focus on someone else besides him is going to be a good thing down the stretch. This is how the power forward faired in the two games he played…
Henson averaged 18.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots in North Carolina wins over Evansville and Long Beach State. In Tuesday’s 97-48 win over Evansville, Henson had 13 points, 12 boards and three blocks. Four days later, the Tampa, Fla., junio...

Smiling Henson a menace on the court

John Henson loves to smile. Sometimes, he just cant help it.

Following a poorly played win at Virginia last season, Henson sat at his locker answering questions about the Tar Heels performance that afternoon. As the questions got more critical, a smile emerged on Hensons face.

I dont know what to tell you, he said. We just didnt play well but we got the win, though.

Henson is 6-foot-10, thin, has a wingspan of someone 7-4, can leap through the top of an arena, has an amazing defensive knack for swatting opponents shots anywhere hed like, and is a positive influence inside the locker room.

The Tampa native is also a big kid. He loves to joke around, and if you ever talk to him up close, disregard the long legs and arms and the massive hands, he looks like a kid in his face.

Yeah, I can see that, said teammate Dexter Strickland, a junior like Henson. He certainly acts like one a lot.

But theres something within Henson that transforms him once he steps onto the basketball court. A menacing streak surface
