Maryland's win over Duke has broad reach

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland sure needed this win.

The Terrapins needed to beat No. 2 Duke to give a healthy boost to their NCAA Tournament chances. The Terps did that with a thrilling 83-81 victory that carried numerous storylines within the game's 40 minutes.

But Maryland needed this for its soul, too.

This is a school, and primarily a program, that has long felt out of place in the ACC. Former coach Lefty Driesell often joked that if he won the ACC Tournament he'd drive around the state of North Carolina with the trophy attached to the hood of his car. Former coach Gary Williams, who led the program to the national championship in 2002, couldn't stand the fact that most of the conference tournaments were in Greensboro or Charlotte.

Maryland coaches and fans have complained about being Guam compared to the rest of the league, and with the school's decision to leave the ACC for the Big Ten, the animosity is more shared from around the conference back at the school and they know it. Hen

A look at Maryland's Starting Lineup

In the past few games there have been a couple changes to the Maryland starting five. After Mitchell came down with 14 boards and 19 points in the Delaware State game he earned a spot in the starting lineup over James Padgett. No surprise with this move considering Mitchell’s great play. Jake Layman got the start in the Virginia Tech game over a banged up Nick Faust. The move paid off well as Jake came up with a season high 20 points (18 first half).  Jake’s success in the starting lineup will make a case for him to possibly be a starter in any given game.
When I think of my ideal starting five from the 10 man Maryland rotation I have a hard time coming up with a single answer because the team has so much talent (never a bad thing). Below are a few starting lines ups I see being ideal for the next several games and for the down the road depending on match ups.
Option 1 – 1st half of ACC schedule: Maryland plays a team with a stronger frontcourt than backcourt.
1 – Pe’Shon Howard
2 – Dez Wells
3 â

Maryland 83, Lafayette 74

Alex Len scored 16, James Padgett had 14, and Maryland never trailed in an 83-74 win over Lafayette on Tuesday night.

Nick Faust had 13 points and eight rebounds, freshman Charles Mitchell scored 12 and Dez Wells added 11 for the Terrapins (3-1), who have won three in a row following a season-opening loss to defending national champion Kentucky.

In this one, Maryland's inside game was enough to overcome the Leopards' deft outside shooting. The Terrapins finished with a 44-28 rebounding advantage and scored 50 points in the paint, but Lafayette stayed relatively close by going 15 for 32 from 3-point range.

Seth Hinrichs led the Leopards (1-4) with 20 points and Joey Ptasinski had 14. Sophomore Dan Trist missed a third straight game with a sprained left ankle after scoring a career-high 30 in Lafayette's overtime win over LIU-Brooklyn.

The Leopards fell to 2-19 against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The only two wins were over Virginia in 1972 and Miami in 1991.

The Terps return four key players from last season's 17-15 squad: guards Nick Faust and Pe'Shon Howard, center Alex Len and forward James Padgett, and welcome a freshman class that was ranked in the top 20 nationally. Maryland also added two transfers who are eligible to play immediately in Dez Wells and Logan Aronhalt. Wells, who on Wednesday was cleared to play by the NCAA, is an athletic, physical and versatile guard. The sophomore averaged 9.8 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game for Xavier last year. Aronhalt is a proven scorer that netted 1,100 points in his career at Albany.

Terrell Stoglin scored 23 points, James Padgett had 15 and Maryland blew a 16-point lead before rebounding to beat in-state foe Mount St. Mary's 77-74 Wednesday night.

The Terrapins (5-3) trailed 70-69 with 2:53 remaining against a team that lost to Marquette by 54 points and to Minnesota by 29.

Stoglin put Maryland up with a jumper, then added another to make it 73-70 with 1:48 left. After Josh Castellanos sank a layup for the Mountaineers, Stoglin missed a runner in the lane, giving the Mountaineers a chance to take the lead.

Julian Norfleet missed a layup and Danny Thompson was denied a shot before Maryland's Mychal Parker gained control of the ball and was fouled. He made both free throws with 14 seconds left.

Thompson dunked with 2.3 seconds left for the Mountaineers, but Sean Mosely clinched for the Terps by making two foul shots with 1 second remaining.

Terrell Stoglin scored 24 points, James Padgett fueled a decisive second-half run, and Maryland squeezed out a 73-67 victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night.

Back home after losing two of three in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, the Terrapins (3-2) overcame a slow start to hand the Eagles (2-4) their third straight loss.

Florida Gulf Coast trailed 36-30 shortly after halftime before Padgett scored five successive points in a 16-6 spree that made it 52-36 with 13 minutes left. Stoglin had two free throws and a 3-pointer during the surge, and Berend Weijs capped it with a tip-in and jumper in the lane.

After Florida Gulf Coast closed to 62-55, Padgett hit a short jumper and Nick Faust scored off his own steal to push the lead back to double-digits. The Eagles cut the gap to 70-66 with 47.6 seconds left but could not complete the comeback, even though Stoglin went 2 for 8 from the foul line in the final 75 seconds.

Florida Gulf Coast went 2 for 19 from 3-point range and was 13 for 23 at the foul line.
