Purdue 89, Minnesota 73

D.J. Byrd and Rapheal Davis each scored 18 points as Purdue rolled past Minnesota 89-73 on Saturday.

The Boilermakers (15-16, 8-10) won for only the third time in seven games as they head into next week's Big Ten tournament.

For Minnesota (20-11, 8-10), it was another dreadful day on the road. Forward Trevor Mbakwe got into early foul trouble and the Golden Gophers looked flat as they fell into an early 15-point deficit. They never recovered.

Andre Hollins scored 24 points, Rodney Williams added 13 points and Mbakwe finished with six points and 10 rebounds after playing fewer than five minutes in the first half. Minnesota lost its third straight to the Boilermakers and its eighth consecutive road game.

How bad was it?

Minnesota missed seven of its first eight shots, found itself in a quick 20-5 hole and never got closer than seven again.

For the Gophers, it was yet another inexplicable performance outside The Barn.

Byrd, one of two seniors playing his final regular-season home game, produced his be

Purdue upsets No. 17 Wisconsin

D.J. Byrd scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half and Purdue upset No. 17 Wisconsin 69-56 Sunday afternoon.

Terone Johnson added 16 points for the Boilermakers (14-15, 7-9 Big Ten), who had lost three straight road games and four of five overall. Purdue took control with a 21-3 run in the second half during which Byrd had nine points and Johnson eight.

Jared Berggren scored 13 points and Ryan Evans and Sam Dekker had 10 apiece for the Badgers (20-9, 11-5), who had won six of their previous seven.

The loss left Wisconsin barely clinging to title hopes in the tightly contested Big Ten: The Badgers need to win their final two games, Thursday at No. 9 Michigan State and next Sunday at Penn State, and get a lot of help to claim a share of their first conference championship since 2007-08.

Byrd hit three 3-pointers and Johnson added four baskets in the decisive 21-3 run as Purdue pulled away, silenced the crowd at Kohl Center and won here for the first time since January 2009.

Purdue tops Illinois in Big Ten opener

Purdue figured out how to slow the pace --and still score a little, too, Wednesday night.

Terone Johnson finished with a career-high 25 points and D.J. Byrd scored nine of his 15 during a key 19-3 second-half run, sending the Boilermakers past No. 11 Illinois 68-61.

Byrd sealed the game with a three-point play with 20.1 seconds to go.

The Boilermakers (7-6, 1-0 Big Ten) have won three straight and are over .500 for the first time this season. They have won eight straight over the Fighting Illini.

Illinois (13-2, 0-1) was led by Brandon Paul with 15 points and Joseph Bertrand with 14, but managed only one basket during a decisive 5 1/2-minute stretch of the second half. Illinois has lost eight straight conference road games, dating to a Jan. 4, 2012 win at Northwestern.

Its losing streak against Purdue is the school's longest against a Big Ten foe since dropping nine straight to Purdue from 1996 to 2000.

Still, it took everything the Boilermakers had to hang on when Illinois rallied from a 10-point d

Clemson's rally falls short against Boilermakers

CLEMSON, S.C. -- D.J. Byrd 20 points and six 3-pointers in the first half as Purdue built a big lead and held on to defeat Clemson 73-61 in the ACCBig 10 Challenge on Wednesday night.

The Boilermakers (3-3) won in the conference challenge for a fourth straight year and did on the strength of their early outside shooting. Byrd was 6 of 9 from beyond the arc while Purdue had seven threes overall to lead 42-22 at the break.

Clemson (4-2) cut the 23-point lead to 68-59 on Adonis Filer's three with 1:31 remaining but got no closer. The Tigers played without suspended leading scorer Milton Jennings, who was arrested on a drug possession charge earlier Wednesday.

Byrd finished with 22 points and Terone Johnson 13 for Purdue.

Devin Booker had 18 points to lead the Tigers. Bernard Sullivan started in place of the 6-foot-9 Jennings and missed both shots he attempted.

Jennings was charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana or 10 grams or less of hash. Police say they went to Jennings on-campus a

NCAA needs to revisit flagrant foul rule

Purdue and Villanova played an entertaining game last night in the 2K Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden. They did their part, at least for the first 39 minutes. And that's when the refs took over. With the ball, and up four, Purdue inbounded to DJ Byrd. It was a bad inbounds plays because it allowed Nova to trap Byrd against the sideline. Here's the video: He was called for an offensive foul, which, in my opinion, is not the right call. The replay shows that there was minimal, if any contact, between Byrd's tricep and the defender's chin. But the defender flopped and got the call. This happens. It was a bang-bang play and it's hard to fault the officials. So while I think they made the wrong call, it's tough to blame anyone for it. It would have been Nova's ball, down four. It was also DJ Byrd's fifth foul, and he was the primary offensive catalyst for the Boilermakers. For the game he scored 16 points and had five assists. But the off...

Boilermakers kick Kelsey Barlow off team, suspend Byrd

The Purdue Boilermakers have had some terrible luck the last few seasons. The previous two seasons, which were seasons that Purdue were Final Four contenders, essentially derailed by knee injuries to Robbie Hummel. This season did carry the expectations, but saw a young team starting to gel together at the right time as the NCAA Tournament approaches. But the Boilermakers will have to overcome great adversity to keep things together as junior guard Kelsey Barlow has been thrown off the team by coach Matt Painter, and forward DJ Byrd has been suspended. Both Barlow and Byrd were involved in an incident that took place at Where Else, a near-by campus bar.
Byrd was arrested for public intoxication, and the police are investigating whether or not he was involved with an assault allegation. Barlow had been kicked out of the bar earlier in the night. Why does Byrd receive a suspension and Barlow was kicked off the team? Because this is another strike against Barlow, who had been ...

Purdue dismisses Barlow, suspends Byrd

Purdue kicked guard Kelsey Barlow off the team Friday and suspended swingman D.J. Byrd for a pivotal late-season game following an early-morning incident at a bar.

Lt. Gary Sparger of the West Lafayette police said officers were called to Where Else bar near the Purdue campus just before 3 a.m. after a disturbance. Both Barlow and Byrd were there when police arrived.

Police are investigating an allegation that Byrd assaulted one of the bar's bouncers. Sparger said Barlow had been kicked out of the bar earlier that night, then told bar staff he had left his wallet inside but was not allowed back in.

Byrd was arrested by Indiana State Police for public intoxication and spent five hours in jail. He will miss Sunday's home game against No. 7 Michigan State as the Boilermakers (17-9, 7-6 Big Ten) try to improve their record and RPI in hopes of an NCAA tournament berth.

In a statement, Purdue said the players were punished for violating unspecified team rules.

''This is an unfortunate situation, but we will move forward as a program,'' coach Matt Painter said. ''We expect our student-athletes to live up to a high standard, and when their actions become detrimental to the program, there are consequences.''

The school said it would have no further comment.

Barlow, a 6-5 guard from Indianapolis, started 22 of 26 games this season, averaging 24.3 minutes and 8 points. Byrd, a 6-5 player from Crawfordsville, Ind., had started four games, averaging 17.1 minutes and giving the Boilermakers a deep threat with 45 percent shooting from 3-point range.

Barlow was suspended just before last year's NCAA tournament for conduct detrimental to the team. The Boilermakers lost in the second round to Virginia Commonwealth.

Police were expected to file their report with the Tippecanoe County prosecutor's office by Tuesday. A message left at the bar was not immediately returned.

State police declined to comment on the matter, saying the county prosecutor's office would release information. The prosecutor's office did not return repeated calls for information.

Kelsey Barlow Kicked Off Purdue Basketball Team, D.J. Byrd Suspended One Game

Let’s update this morning’s post about what Matt Painter should do with guard D.J. Byrd and his public intox arrest, shall me?
A lot’s happened in the past few hours.
Within the last hour it was announced that Byrd has been suspended one game, meaning he will miss this weekend’s very, very important game against Michigan State. What was not known this morning when the story broke was that Byrd was far from the only Boiler involved in last night’s campus festivities.
Kelsey Barlow, who was suspended before last year’s NCAA Tournament, was dismissed from Purdue’s basketball team in the aftermath of Byrd’s arrest.

Here at Matt Painter’s comments, via The Purdue Exponent:

Purdue G DJ Byrd arrested for public intoxication

Purdue guard D.J. Byrd was arrested by state police Friday morning for public intoxication.

Authorities said Byrd was booked into Tippecanoe County Jail around 3:30 a.m. Friday and released five hours later.

West Lafayette police say they were called to a West Lafayette bar just before 3 a.m. for a disturbance and Byrd was still at the bar at the time.

The junior from Crawfordsville, Ind., has had multiple rebounds and has scored in the double-digits in each of his last five games. Purdue (17-9, 7-6 Big Ten) plays at home Sunday against No. 4 Michigan State.

The team declined immediate comment.

Report: Purdue guard D.J. Byrd arrested

Purdue guard D.J. Byrd was arrested early Friday on a charge of public intoxication, the West Lafayette Journal & Courier reported.

Byrd, 21, was booked into jail at about 3 a.m. local time Friday. He was released about five hours later.

Details of the incident have not been made public.

Head coach Matt Painter was reportedly reviewing the incident and weighing the starting guard's status for Sunday's game against seventh-ranked Michigan State.

Byrd, a junior, is averaging eight points per game this season for the Boilermakers, but has come on strong with 16.8 points over the past five games.

Purdue is fighting for a spot in the NCAA Tournament at 17-9 and 7-6 in Big Ten play.

Purdue’s D.J. Byrd Arrested For Public Intox – How Would You Discipline Him If You Were Matt Painter?

Last night, Purdue guard D.J. Byrd was arrested for public intox. (More details here from our friends at Hammer & Rails.)
As of this writing, no word has emerged yet on how Purdue coach Matt Painter will discipline Byrd.
If you were the Purdue coach, how would you punish Byrd?

How would you punish D.J. Byrd? (Photo by Michael Heinz/Journal & Courier)
A few facts to consider:

This is Byrd’s first disciplinary issue to my knowledge.
Last year, Kelsey Barlow was suspended for the NCAA Tournament, presumably for a marijuana offense.
Byrd has been playing very well of late, scoring in double digits in each of Purdue’s last five games, including 20 or more in two of the last three.
Purdue is on the NCAA Tournament bubble at 17-9. Three of their final five games are against #8 Michigan State, #19 Michigan, and #20 Indiana.

Here are my thoughts on the issue:
Among the offenses that a college athlete can commit, public intox is rather low on my list of egregiousness. It is, howeve...
